I have a theory that Riker hated O'Brien, and was jelly of him. Especially in The Wounded episode when Captain Maxwell beamed aboard and congratulated Riker on beating the borg, and Riker was like, "aw shucks", but then Maxwell looked past Riker, saw O'Brien and started complimenting him massively, and then when they were both leaving, Riker looked back at O'Brien with the coldest look of rage ever. I think he was also jelly of the respect Picard had for him, with how Picard chased him to the transporter room when he was leaving for DS9! And when Tommy Riker snubbed O'Brien in the DS9 episode Defiant, I think it was Jonathan Frakes wanting to keep up the whole anger towards O'Brien thing, even though it wasn't actually William Riker that time!!!!
This episode has some parallels with 'Darmok," when Geordi has to work together with an unknown and possibly hostile Romulan survivor so they may survive on the planet together. Classic 'Trek' is at its best in developing episodes focusing on the importance of cooperation like this.
This is the best episode of all time IN GERMAN. There is a fanmade dub.. that is so old it originally circulated on VHS. On that dub this romulan, called "Remulaner" is a raging badass who insults everyone and challenges them to a fight. He also wants to have intercourse with the doc (while doing cocaine). There is a whole small series. It is beyond hilarious. (Called "Sinnlos im Weltraum".)
Why did the directors think Riker should handle his anger like a child? Frakes probably wanted to be more subdued and realistic with his character's temper.
Not just anger, he feels guilty that he lost Geordie on a mission, and it makes him act desperate, which I suppose is childish for a man in his position and rank. Geordie was a close friend though...
They couldn’t beam him to sickbay? Also, if they have a transporter that rebuilds people it’s deconstructed you’d think it could rebuild the injured? Lost a leg, to the transporter! Seconds and you’ve got a shiny new leg.
It's not a replicator like some people think, late TNG series and followup series of DS9 and VOY state that it uses quantum mechanics to effectively put people in two places at once and slowly force their probability of being in the destination to 1 during the "beaming" process. And unfortunately, quantum mechanics has one bit rule that was put forward just a few years before this episode came out; no cloning is possible.
A Tom Baker dr who episode used a transmat to purge a lethal toxin from sarah jane’s blood-theory being either that it only put back together what was you or it used a previous body print. I believe TNG also mentioned ‘body prints’ a few times-but they used the transporters as a very odd plot device.
If that romulan had a broken leg and you wanted to repaired. They would have to have his transporter signature stored in their database in order to even attempt that
We don't talk about the transporters.. because you just clone a million copies of yourself with one, given a sufficient amount of energy, which they have because you can buy anti-matter at the 7/11 in the 24th century.
Everyone's saying that Riker shouldn't have yelled at O'Brian, yes that is true, But understand that he also is the one that left Geordi behind. He feels responsible to get him back. Of course he's on edge. So while he shouldn't have taken it out on someone else, it is understandable, He's only human after all.
Has the fact that the crew are constantly making references to Judeo Christian values ever struck anyone else as odd? How often do they say, “My god!” or, “For God’s sake!” I’m not angry about it or anything, it just seems odd that a race so technologically advanced would still use that phraseology. It definitely grounded the series in the time it was made, but doesn’t exactly jive with the setting in a lot of cases.
The universal translator has adapted what they actually said into what we consider normal (American) English. It's the same reason why Picard and Scotty say aluminum (rather than aluminium).
@@josephmassaro I actually think this is one of the times dr crusher needed to be put in her place by riker or picard. She has absolutely no place in commenting on head of securities orders in this situation. She should have been told to shut up and let worf do his job.
@@NoGlockTrucker Not necessarily. In the modern world, I'd agree with you, but in the Star Trek world, the enlightened view of things has led to CMO's having a lot more latitude when it comes to overriding officers. Even the captain. So, it's more a clash of priorities. Worf's is the security of the ship and Crusher's is the care of her patient and in the Trek universe, she can't simply be overruled on grounds we might consider more pressing.
Riker can get downright bitchy when things don't go his way. Barking at O'Brien was pointless.
