  • This is my USS Arizona model by Hobby Boss with photo etch railings added. This build is dedicated to Harry Houdini who's review of this model persuaded me to buy one and build it. He never finished it due to health issues and ended up selling his to someone who would finish building it. Hope you like it Harry!

Great result with the photo etch Paul. Ezline is resin, so it’s nothing like elastic thread. But your rigging worked out fine. The colours you chose are spot on for that period ship and your wood base sets it off nicely. All in all, knowing the problems with that kit, you have made a pretty fine ship.

Thank you very much for your compliment Harry. It is a nice size model and makes for a nice display. I am more of a star trek modeler along with other sci-fi models all lit up this made for something different as it has been quite a few years since I built a ship. Some time if you get a chance you should see the Revell build and play Star Destroyer that I recently finished up. Over 1000 holes and a little over 300 feet of .25mm fiber optics and some other custom lighting and you would never know it was meant to be a play thing.

Thanks Dirk. Had fun doing this build as I have always had a facination with naval ships. Used to fish by Navy Pier in Chicago back in the days when they still had the USS Silversides Gato class submarine docked there. It was a really good hangout for jumbo perch. Something about the Arizona set it apart besides it's history that always made it apeal to me as wanting to do a nice model of it. I built that old Revell version back in the day and even then there were things about it that just didn't make it look good. Still remember building that one and watching Sink The Bismark on Family Classics with Frazier Thomas. "That doesn't give away my age I hope". I think back then I also built the Pensylvania, and the Carolina that Revell had out at the time. This was fun to build and detail and learn about the ship as I did some research for the paint and other things.

This turned out really awesome! I have it to build with all the extra bells and whistles. I'm gonna go all out and try my hand with all the things I've never worked with before. All the models I have ever built were straight out of the box and hand painted. I'm excited to try the more modern finishes! With you using just the PE railings, this looks amazing!

Thank you very much for the kind words. I am sure with all the skills you have yours will turn out awesome. This is not my usual genre of modeling as I build mainly Star Trek and other sci-fi models with all the lighting, but it's nice to get into something else once in awhile. I did a couple ships with seascapes, and a few car dioramas as I have built a lot of cars through the years. I also used to do a lot of model railroading too.
Be starting on a Ban-Dai millennium falcon soon with all the lights and some new Star Trek models with lighting. I also make my own circuit boards for my models too.
Hope you do some videos on your Arizona and I will be looking forward to seeing it.

Not patience so much as I have been building models for 48 years now, and I also have a lot of experience scatchbuilding parts and entire moodels. There are a couple videos on this and I explain how I corrected this.

Thanks for the compliment. It was fun to do something other than sci-fi. This was a nice kit after you get through the issues, and adding the railings gave it that finished look.
