Yeah, all seem like she doesn't really change character though, same gestures, smiles, laughs, cries, hysterics, etc., in everything she's in. I like her but just sayin'.
Vera Farmiga should have won an award for this. Watching her slowly become more and more despondent once she realized exactly what was happening at the camps and realizing what her husband was capable of was an amazing performance. And when she realizes what has happened to her son, it's heartbreaking. I think she is seriously underrated as an actress.
Did the father win an award too? His character development was amazing. At the start it looked like he genuinely believed in what was said, then the party happened and his mother (Bruno’s Grandma) voices her opinions, which then he tells her to be careful. Then later when all the high ranking German officers meet to watch the film, he has some sort of skeptical look on his face, not to mention how is wife feels about the whole thing. Then of course, the very ending scene, where he sprints all the way to the chambers, with a sense of guilt and regret and tension.
@@HawksBeast Yes, I think the same. Everyone here praises the mother, but the actor cast as the father was equally wonderful. The way he shouted his son's name at the end has so much emotion. In general, it was a difficult role: on the one hand, he had to be hateful and cold, but on the other hand, he is still a husband and father who loves his family. In fact, he could have reported his wife to the authorities or just punched her in the face during an argument. I think his commitment to Nazism waned more and more over time, and at the end of the book it says that he voluntarily surrendered to the Allies. Anyway, it was very good acting.
the fact that this was true and have happened many times back then is what breaks my heart more, no one should EVER go thru this or even dare this happen again, my heart goes to all the people who have past away in those times, may they find peace.
I think there was a mix of Germans that had basically been brainwashed and desensitised to the point where they see the inmates as just objects to be processed... then there were the real nasty sadistic nutters that just enjoyed it. There was an interesting psychological documentary regarding propaganda, brain washing and group mentality regarding to how the Nazis managed to make people behave like they did. Jordan Peterson also made a point that we all like to think we would do the right thing, but when it comes to survival of you and your family the mind set begins to alter drastically.

A lot of people thought it was going to be a good ending. But I’m glad it wasn’t. There was no happy ending to this in real life, and the fact that they made it very real makes everything more “real life.” This was truly a roller coaster of emotions...
That's why it's called a good ending: not because it's happy but because it took us on a emotional ride to give us a glance of what it might have been like in that moment.
Um, Schindler’s List took this topic and while the film WAS hard to watch at times for its graphic yet realistic depiction, it at least ended on an uplifting note showing the real life survivors that Schindler freed at his gravestone. This, I get the idea, especially the point that the father lost his own by the same method he helped use against countless other innocents, but still. As well as Bruno and Shmuel tragically being too young and naive to understand the horrible fate that awaited them. But I really don’t like downbeat endings that make you feel like shit when they’re over.
Yes I agree. That's why I enjoyed the Sum of all fears aswell. The bomb goes off. The mad dash to stop it fails, and the aftermath is ultimately more interesting as it is much closer to real life.
@InsuranceFrauder the only thing that was accurate about this movie was that jews were being murdered. the whole friendship simply couldn't have happened, simply because the majorty of jewish children were murdered upon arriving to the camp, within a few hours.
Gemma Joikhun well she’s not the only one who lost a child. Many mothers in that camp lost their children too. She’s not the only one that deserves sympathy.

What stayed with me was that the mother started screaming in anguish whereas the father had little reaction when he realised he effectively killed his son
I don't think it was little reaction. I think it was shock as he realized he had effectively killed his son. I don't think he could do anything but stand there.
I have never ever watched anything more painful than this. Rest in peace to each and every soul who perished in those chambers. You will not ever be forgotten.
We can't change all but we can change ourselves for sure, so start from yourself, and make sure you never hurt anyone, there will be at least two good people on this earth then 😁
He fact that the dad only cared when his son was dead really discussed me. And knowing this actually happend and nobody cared is hurtful. The dad should of looked for Bruno AND the other people in that room. He should feel that pain.
You know what’s sad how the sister thought that the dad “Was a good man and we should proud of him” she literally believed everything their tutor said Jews were bad
Well, there are many reasons why she does. She's been eating that propaganda since she was a kid, it's kinda not her fault, but at the same time it's hard to not point fingers at her.
@@dagu1801 Yeah. I personally think, as someone who has had a father who grew up in a dictatorship (Francoist Spain), that it's not entirely the fault of people like this. They were spoonfed hatred and ignorance since birth (and the pro-fascist media my father in particular still consumes also does), and cognitive dissonance is a very serious issue. I've tried to talk to him openly and understanding(ly?), but some people are just too far gone and probably left well alone.
Well it’s not like she had any other choice. She was taught that jews were bad her whole life. I can’t bring myself to blame her (as she did nothing wrong, she was born in the wrong family)

The really disgusting thing is that Hitler hated the camps too. He never visited them. He just saw them as something necessary to further his plan. It's truly sick
Kaylyn Boyd what she meant was that jewish israelis are doing some horrible stuff to palestinians and that is true, not to the extent nazis did but after what your people went through you’d think you wouldn’t want to do it to someone else. And what china is doing to uyghur muslims right now in this moment, google it, i get it white people suck or whatever but right now they definitely aren’t the perpetrators.
The plot alone was enough to drive me to tears, but what had me sobbing was the mother's screaming. She was screaming in complete agony over her lost son, something that hit my chest so deep. I honestly felt myself change after this movie. Just a few hours ago, one of my classmates were making jokes about Hitler. I could practically feel the steam radiating off my body.
The filmmakers were manipulating your emotions. Some people react differently to that. And there is such thing as gallows humour. I'll ask you to consider for a moment that horrible things have taken place throughout human history. It is very difficult to demonstrate sympathy when time and place are so distant. Also the suspension of disbelief. While you might have been lost in the story, your peers saw this as a production with actors and sets. In a video game I can shoot an innocent person, kick a cat and drive my car on the sidewalk with no regard for the pedestrians. Because it isn't real. They aren't real people. Only a representation of people. If we are to have a serious talk about real people then it's much different. Of course the suffering and premature death of gypsies, gays and the Jewish people in Nazi concentration camps was absolutely horrible. With no benefit to anyone. Oh wait. Was your compassion only for the innocent boy of the Nazi officer and the Jewish prisoners? Were you unaware of the other people in the camps including gypsies and gays? Yes, during the Second World War a British scientist Alan Turing pioneered modern computers and artificial intelligence to break German codes and helped end the war. For his trouble he lived in obscurity because he couldn't speak publicly of his work during the war. Possibly the scientist that contributed the most to the war effort for the allies. Later he faced prison time or forced chemical castration for sodomy. Yeah, you can save the free world but you better not be gay! Can't have any of that when you're "The Good Guys".
Yeah. Too bad it's just fiction. The youngest surviving SS officers are in their 90s and still don't think there was anything wrong with what they did. For one to feel any remorse is so rare.

It's so sad bc all they thought was that they were going to have a shower it's truly heartbreaking
Brunos last words in the book were:
"You're my best friend, Shmuel. My best friend for life."
And for the horror to be brought upon them, Bruno never let go of Shmuels tiny hand.
Well they weren't friends for long apparently
@@johnny5aces765 well during that time they were closer then anything, so that made them best friends, even though they died they still died in each other's embrace.
@@johnny5aces765 they were actually friends for almost 2 years. In the beginning of the book Bruno was 9 and in the end he was 11. I would consider that a sort of long time.
Chloe Rorison...as heart breaking the ending is, Bruno´s holding Shumuel´s hand and and his words is so touching and beautiful. Reading this brought tears to my eyes.
Honestly, nobody will understand this book, unless they know history properly. Thats why most people in the comments find it a joke or pure fiction.
I still don’t know how Vera still doesn’t have an Oscar, like... she’s fucking brilliant at every role she has done! Smh.

Agree! Absolutely agree!
Sooooo true
Yeah, all seem like she doesn't really change character though, same gestures, smiles, laughs, cries, hysterics, etc., in everything she's in. I like her but just sayin'.
100 percent agree
Vera Farmiga should have won an award for this. Watching her slowly become more and more despondent once she realized exactly what was happening at the camps and realizing what her husband was capable of was an amazing performance. And when she realizes what has happened to her son, it's heartbreaking. I think she is seriously underrated as an actress.
She is truly talented at being incredibly sad and incredibly scared. She’s criminally underrated.
She did win an award for this..
She won a British Independent Film award and a CinEuphoria award :)
It horrifies me that there are people alive who still don't care, about this or any other tragedy.

For his trouble he lived in obscurity because he couldn't speak publicly of his work during the war. Possibly the scientist that contributed the most to the war effort for the allies. Later he faced prison time or forced chemical castration for sodomy. Yeah, you can save the free world but you better not be gay! Can't have any of that when you're "The Good Guys".
I remember reading the book and thinking "the kid is sure to escape and they'll run away together".... never expected this.
I thought it was either going to be an actual shower or the father was going to command them to not gas everyone
Same, it was very painful when I realized it wasn't ending like that, and that was the first time I cried reading a book.
Yes man in the book the ending had been so short
Me too but instead i got my heart ripped into pieces
The way Bruno grabs and holds Shmuel''s hand before the end, made me tear up so much, but they both perished holding hands, wow.
Bruno’s death was a lesson for his dad.. now he knows the feeling.
Yeah. Doesn’t feel good now doesn’t huh.
Yeah. Too bad it's just fiction. The youngest surviving SS officers are in their 90s and still don't think there was anything wrong with what they did. For one to feel any remorse is so rare.
He will condolence himself by accusing Jews, that's Nazi for You

@@anjbarker5015 I know some of these events have happened in the past, but _this_ in particular is a well executed movie with amazing acting that takes you on an emotional roller coaster. You think for a sec these events are actually happening in front of your eyes.
fox world they had it worst. This movies shows heaven compared to what happened.
@@shiashia8463 heaven?! you have to be joking.
Yh i know💔💔
I hope with all my heart that people realize that it has only been a few decades since this has happened. DECADES! What has come of our world! BRUH!
It’s been like 70 years
savvy briceño now Zionist treating Palestines almost in the same manner
as of may 8 2020 it has been 75 years since the holocaust
That's an under statement but it's still closer than most people feel
I can only pray that it will never happen again. It begun with hatred and ugly words.
The fact it took a german boy accidentally dying for them to see the horrors they caused millions of parents who were still inside those gates
The fact that this is happening in China right now with millions of Muslims, and no one is talking about it...and we said we would NEVER let this happen again.
Yep. I hate China, simply for that.
@@mackavelly x I myself am 100% Chinese and was adopted and taken to Hawaii. I myself am thoroughly disgusted by my country and what they are doing right now. I don’t want them to die, I don’t hate them, I just want them to learn a lesson. Also being Chinese is a little hard right now because of COVID-19 but we are trying to pull past that and try to smile during these horrible times.

@@m3_mac I’m also adopted from China and COVID-19 and these horrible things that happens in China makes me so embarrassed of my origin... Everyday I hear people in my school yelling bad about Chinese people and I understand why since they only see it from that perspective... When the mother cried, a shiver went down my entire body. It so real..
I'm literally shaking like mad it's so sad that this actually happened 😭 were so lucky to be alive now
Vera’s wailing at the end of this movie is absolutely haunting. Always makes me cry. Fantastic acting.
She’s so goooood
It wasn't acting
Yeah I lost it seeing that. That part felt so real and like she really lost her own kid.
@@ibrahimzyiadh7826then why would it be recorded?
@cheeseyfingers9046 I meant it as a metaphor
This scene absolutely broke me.
None of them deserved that.
This is one of the few movies that has actually made me cry
Can we just make sure nothing like this ever happens again?
Its happening to muslims in china as we speak
Very similar things like this are still happening. Not (exclusively) on the base of race/religion but still due to politics.
_ EdieMcCreadie _ we can try...
@gamewizard I I nominate you the first up. Evil bastard

@Truth Pretty sure the mounds of human shoes in the abandoned camps say otherwise.

This is so sad. All Bruno and Shmuel wanted to do was find his father. The fact that they are just kids makes it sadder 😢
You say that but none of them did anything wrong
yes, and Shmuel´s dad must have been dead too
@@hollandspotje7812 she is right
The even sadder thing is this happened to millions of people
I hate to sound heartless but I mean- they did- ( oh god I feel so bad now)
I get a bit of comfort in knowing that Shmuel didn't have to die alone, scared and confused. He had Bruno by his side until the end.
Let's not forget the real children that didn't have this comfort though
1:44 Can you imagine being the guy who has to close the door on his own people, knowing that they are about to die in minutes?

This is heartbreaking because you can't take a step back and say it was just a movie. This actually happened. Not the certain situation with Bruno and Shmuel, but to millions of others.
it's sad to think that even if Bruno moved or not, it would be the last time he and Shmuel would see each other anyway
The way the older man looked over at them knowing the kids had no idea what was going on
Seeing a mother's grief like that is beyond sad
Yea and this actress did it well. That was a true representation of actual feelings, she must be a method actress
The moms acting is so good but so sad
I’m so glad there was music covering up this whole entire shot. Can you imagine if they didn’t and you could just hear the screams and cries for help? Maybe Bruno shouting for his parents or sister? Devastating
@Bubble Tea 123 I can’t even begin to imagine. The silence when they showed the empty room really got to me
in the movie there is actually no music in the background they just pasted a soundtrack in the back
in movie you hear them banging and shouting for help. then it gets softer and softer till that eerie quiet and the music starts playing as it zooms out
Bruno didn’t know what was happening so I don’t think he’d scream out for his parents
Wouldve been nice to hear
Ive never seen someone able to so perfectly capture the pain and agony of losing someone like Vera Farmiga did here
Vera's cry is absolutely agonizing. It shocked me right to my core. I had to step out of my class when we watched it at school, it was so heartbreaking to hear. And the most heartbreaking fact about it is how it actually happened.
when the mom cried , i lost it
