And my only gripe with the adaptation itself was that they didn't follow the layouts of Bolland's flashback structure wasn't adhered to. He laid them all out very cinematically, complete with dissolves, and you only get a few examples in the movie. So ultimately, the book is still more cinematic than the movie.

Hamill is coming back as The Joker in the next JLA animated series. That should be neat.

I've not seen it yet but given how everyone describes this batgirl portion at the start I wonder why it wasn't included as just an extra? As you say chapter skipping is hardly a big deal, still a shame they didn't just keep the two separate. They must have been really confident in this new backstory I guess.

I agree. It's a great film, but the Batgirl stuff should've been its own thing. That potion was okay, but I'm more interested into seeing the Killing Joke more than a Batgirl story.

Long time fan of your Channel and have actually found your taste in movies are very similar to mine and your reviews have introduced me to several movies I had never heard of. As a fellow collector thought I'd let you know if you pick up the shout factory bukaroo Banzia keep you DVD special edition because not all the extra's are ported over to the shout factory blu Ray.

I haven't watched The Killing Joke yet but I want to. If I like it enough I'll it on Blu-Ray.
I've got two copies of The Killing Joke graphic novel. The 20th Anniversary Edition which is hardcover and re-colored. My other copy is the paperback edition from 2009 which is the original version from 1988.

I didn't even know people were bitching about the animation. That's really crazy if they thought it was going to look exactly like the comic.

I know what you're saying about it being impossible to replicate the art from the actual comic...however I feel the animation is a step down from all other past DC animations also

I disagree, I don't think the animation quality is any better or worse than the majority of previous films. The character were well drawn and clearly defined, no "stylized" design, just straight up versions of them, the backgrounds and environments were nicely detailed, in short it was pretty much exactly what I was expecting it to be.

Nope, I'll pick it up on Blu-ray when it comes out. I don't see movies in the theater very often.

Just finished watching it, and honestly, I thought it would've been even more dark and fucked-up; that being said, I thought it was okay, it didn't blow me away like I thought it would and the Batgirl story was kinda awkward overall and it could've been better written. One thing that left me feeling odd was when The Joker cracks the joke at the end and Batman laughs with him and I was like, ????, THE GUY SHOT AND RAPED HIS SIDEKICK AND HE SHARES A LAUGH WITH HIM?!! Although before that, I thought it was interesting how Batman wanted to help The Joker rehabilitate. Also, the Oracle mid-credits scene was great, I think that was the only thing I genuinely enjoyed from the entire movie.

I went in to this blind. I actually stopped it part way in because I thought I had gotten the wrong movie.
As for the Batgirl thing I was caught totally off guard when she seduced Batman on the roof. I had always imagined Batman being like a father figure to Batgirl so it made the scene REALLY awkward to me. I'm not really educated in the Batman lore. Immediately after finishing the movie i asked my friend about it (he is also an idiot like me) and he was shocked about it too for the same reason.
Sorta like how you said you were an idiot for not knowing barb was Batgirl at the time of reading the comic. We just had this idea of the character that wasn't accurate.
The rest of the movie was great i enjoyed it a lot. I just felt like explaining our side of the story for people who thought she was younger/daughter figure.

I dunno this movie simply just didn't do it for me. The Batgirl part did feel tacked on and didn't mesh with the Killing Joke portion. As for the latter I can't quite put my finger on it but it just feels there is something that made the story work better for me in print then it did on screen. I feel the only real appeal for me was hearing Mark Hamill and Kevin Conroy reciting the iconic dialogue.
Speaking of the graphic novel I really need to get an older printing of it since the deluxe edition I have redid the colors and I would like the read it with the original palette.

great review man a good friend of mine actually bought me the Blu ray I loved the entire movie but I do sometimes skip ahead to the killing joke to to see as it's own movie I actually loved how the bat girl tied in to the movie even if it was a bit of a different tone witch I totally agree with that. and your right about the fans dude before I saw the movie I read and watched some of the early screening reviews and they were just awful I am sorry but lots of fans suck I read the comic too and yeah shot for shot for the most part fans were way to harsh on this film. it's become one of my favorites right up with mask of the phantasm in my personal opinion keep up the good work Sean cheers dude

I enjoyed TKJ, and almost every past DC animated film but the animation for this one is probably the worst I have seen. I understand they can't copy Bolland's detail or even have the detail such as Miyazaki films or Akira since they use a cheaper Korean studio, but for an anticipated film like this that they knew would hit the theaters the animation quality should have been better. Some of the scenes looked liked they used flash animation from 10 years ago, I think the production must have had a shortened time to make this so it could be released in conjunction with the Suicide Squad release.
I too have a 1st, 2nd printing and deluxe of TKJ, did you not get the deluxe version of TKJ or are you not interested?

Loved the actual Killing Jokes part but disliked the added Batgirl backstory. Just disliked the portrayal of Barbara in it.

I had such high hopes for this, and the second half is a fine adaptation. But the first half is not only terrible, it has nothing to do with Killing Joke AT ALL, and its inclusion hurts Killing Joke thematically. Because Batgirl has no place in Killing Joke. It's trademark Moore irony that it's her "stable" relationship with her father, not her "dangerous" relationship with Batman, that gets her shot. And the story of the Batgirl part is so banal, with a boring generic mob heavy, and a painfully sexist portrayal of Barbara Gordon.

The Batgirl story is pointless and I hated the musical interlude (surely a Joker song and dance routine would be utterly batshit crazy?), otherwise this is a pretty good adaptation.
