- This video describes the construction of a pedal operated retracting caster system for a shop workbench. It is intended to be available to those who have purchased of plans for this system. While this video describes application of retracting casters to a rather small, simple shop workbench, the system could be applied to the most deluxe hardwood woodworker's workbenches and we look forward to seeing your interpretation and application of this design to your workbench .
hi Carl i like your foot pedal design for casters .. I'm a pro wood worker for many years too .. but I have to tell ya , maybe 15 years ago a coworker had a long necklace like yours and it got caught up in a belt sander ... well the belt sander flew up to his face and knocked him out cold and yes it ground off some of his lips and nose .. luckily as he fell the belt sander came unplugged .. the lesson here is alway keep that kind of stuff tucked in your shirt .. i wouldnt want. to see any of your viewers to see this and think its a good idea ;)
Hi Carl,
Fabulous idea and execution. As a professional auto technician I must tell you that the item around your neck is a tragedy waiting to happen my friend!! 3:38 3:42
Awesome idea. Just a small suggestion which could help as bench gets heavier. Mount those gate hinges points on the wall at a height that when you drop the bench off the wheels it drops right on those hinge pins instead of having to lift your bench on to them. 👍🏼
You are absolutely top notch at designing this kind of woodworkers machinery attachments. Thank you so much for a weld documented / explanatory guide. Gerald Wales UK
Among several solutions for retractable castors on UA-cam, this one is my favourable. I'll implement it on my workbench. Thank you sir!
Another excellent project. Thanks for posting
Very ingenious sir. I have watched your other videos of retractable castors and will be adopting the same idea to make my equipment movable. Thank you for sharing this Carl.
Mr. Holmgren s a genius. I have purchased some of his plans in the past. He does a lot more than retractable castors.
Brilliant Carl. Your design is the very best retracting casters videos on the internet. ❤
By watching your videos one can learn to apply your basic concept to other tool's requirements. Thank you!
Your retractable caster designs continue to improve. Thank you for showing us just how you construct them. I'll be trying this in my shop, too.
You rock, Sir! So efficient. No obstacles for your feet. Please, although it seems obvious, your approach to having the drafting plans clamped above your chop saw! At least that is what it looks lik but the resolution isn't sharp enough to really see what you did. Keep on doing this. Newbies need this kind of advice really badly. I don't know about you, but I grew up in a woodshop, No kids get that anymore.
Peace and goodwill!

Just getting into this hobby, videos like this not only show me how to do something specific, but show me how to be flexible with my thinking. Thanks so much
Every time I say "I'm just building this thing temporarily", it ends up being there for much longer than anticipated 😂🤣. I've watched a few of your retractable castors videos now and you seem to have all bases covered with your designs. Thanks for the inspiration.
this was really well thought out! especially the pedal portion. I will remember this!
Thank you for posting more great ideas. Can't wait to try them out on my mobile work bench.
Thank you so much for sharing your great ideas! I’m looking forward to implementing with my own workbench.
Brilliant ideas. Finally I found my way of retracting my wheels on my bandsaw, oscilating sander, planer, jointer and cutoff saw.THANKS a lot.
Excellent Carl! I love what you’ve done here! Thank you so much for sharing.
You sir, are a force of nature. I can see you are pursuing your one true love with the passion of a much younger man. I'm 72 now and just got into woodworking about a year ago. I have much to learn and today I did learn something. Thank you. I admire your devotion to your craft. Well done.
Gave me somegood ideas . Thank you Carll for a nice video.
Hey, you’re just like me, the process is not perfect but the result is! I bet you’ve been at it longer than the other you tubers have been alive.
Great video, thank you. I look forward to making these.
Nice video Carl, now I know how to make my working table mobile. Thanks.
Awesome video Great work !
Great video! Good resource for shop build. Loved the tool box video as well.
The design is great! But the freehand dado cuts with no fence and leaning to look over it is just a nightmare!
I'm sure you've been doing this a long time, but you're very lucky that didn't go south.
What did you use to shape the ends of iron level arms? Love your videos and ideas!

Are these plans still available? The website is now defunct.
I love this idea! Only problem I can see is I’d probably smash my shins on a pedal at least once a day!
Round edges, bevel corners, if necessary attach a split hose to exterior edge, or rather than a rubber hose use a hollow foam noodle, typically used in pools for floatation.💡
You should not have that thing around your neck while running those saws..
Yeah the saw will cut right through it
Please Please Please take that lanyard off, its making me nervous.
I suspect you were a shop teacher. :)
You are wearing necklace with keys on it. It is so annoying for me. You are doing with machinary. It is not safe. Please put behind your t-shirt
