Nice Job, that bore turned out sweet! You can use a Cylinder Hone on bores like this if you only need a thousandth or so. Also slicks up the surface finish and bushings slide easer.

I was a mechanic/carpenter for over forty years and had a ton of tools. Five years ago, the wife talked me into selling most of my tools and shop! Two years ago, she talked me into selling the last of my tools in preparation for retirement into Mexico. We spent a month in Queretaro, Mx. I absolutely loved it and was looking forward to the menjana lifestyle! After a month, she began to have a women fit and decided that she did not want to retire there so we moved back to Tennessee and purchased a new home. I am now having to purchase all new tools! That is the silver lining LOL!

That friend sounds so familiar, my wife decided that we would by that I mean me redecorate and refurbish our bedroom. It took me a couple of weeks to clear out strip all the walls and removed a fitted wardrobe, I then duly redecorated with the colour that she chose. Then unfortunately my wife was ill and was in bed for a couple of months, at the end of the time she said and I quote, 'I hate that colour of paint you need to redecorate'. This coming June god willing it will be our 42nd wedding anniversary, and you know what if I knew now what I knew then, I'd still say I do.

The Bronze Bushings you installed is most likely Ampco 18. This alloy mix handles high load pressure better. Now you are correct on the Graphite in it. This style bushing some what self lubricating. Oil is used at first. From past experience grease can be used but tends to erode the graphite. Where I worked used this style bushings on dies for Automotive industry.

What you can do instead of making go/no-go gauges every time is make a simple telescopic gauge on the lathe. Just a drilled piece of bar that fits through the boring bar, with a smaller diameter bar that slides into it. A set screw to secure it at bore size, remove and measure with a micrometer or calipers. Round the ends over so you get a true reading

    • @paddynfs6452

You can also buy them fairly cheap as a set, called snap gauges (same principle as you mentioned but sprung loaded)

I didin't read all the commens but you don't want to use a regular all thread rod with a hydraulic cylindre. they make special rod that can have 30 or 50 tons of force without breaking. And we always put a second nut with a clevis or something on the rod and a chain so if the rod break it will not go fly around the shop.

Check it out. He does lost different repairs on heavy equipment, I believe he's self owned company. He does excellent work.
