The Burrow sunken home reflects zen garden as tranquil hideout

  • With Madrid rents too high for young architects Ignacio and Pilar, they decided to turn their studio into a stealthy home. They buried the kitchen essentials - refrigerator, pantry - inside the walls of their workspace and added a second room to serve as their bedroom.
To avoid drawing attention to the residential addition, they clad it in a reflective surface (methacrylate with a mirror finish) so it would take blend with the garden.
The couple dubbed their home “The Burrow” both because of its stealth mode and because it is partially underground; they also call it “a lair, a hideout, a shelter”. Besides a small sliver window in the back, the bedroom’s only opening to the outside world is through a round, galvanized steel window, “the oculus”, “which reflects and blurs the incoming light”.
There were originally two skylights on the structure, but 2021's Storm Filomena - Spain’s largest snowstorm in 50 years - knocked a tree onto the home and broke the glass. The home itself withstood the incredible snow loads, though the couple was snowed in for a week.
The space is a mix of natural materials like the cork-clad ceiling (as insulation) and the thatch roof. Ignacio and Pilar say they worried at first that clients might not see their home-studio as professional enough, but instead, they find that while clients may not want to build their own burrow, they fall in love with the coziness of the space.

It’s refreshing to hear young architects saying “cozy”, there’s too much starchitecture, not enough small. And when it just disappears! Even better. Great project, love the father’s picture hanging idea, might steal that, the full moon garden 😍 love it. Best wishes to them and to you for showing us this gem 👌🙌👏

I loved what Ignatio said early in the video : that so often people start with a big garden and then build such a big house that then the garden feels small. That is so true.

@ la Bemba verde; normally this is true. However this situation is quite different; 1) the house and wall are very low to the ground 2) there is a high, dense hedge enclosing most of the area opposite the wall 3) there are additional plantings in front of much of the wall so any birds taking off from ground level would get caught or can hide in those. 4) the mirror distorts...birds are quite sensitive to optics not being “right”. 5) the wall surface is not very large. All of these factors tell me that this wall is less of a danger for birds. While it is possible that a bird being chased might crash into this wall, under normal times it seems very unlikely to be a hazard of great concern and is probably rather safe as no birds in that small a space could get significant speed before a crash. It is of no danger for migrating birds because of all the location factors ... but you are right that normal urban buildings with a lot of mirrored/reflective glass can be a real death trap for birds. Glass companies have started to make glass that has added light spectrum materials in the glass. These materials are visible to birds but invisible to humans. Greatly reduces bird impacts.

So beautiful! As others have mentioned my only big concern is the outside mirrored wall. I hung a mirror outside one time and immediately killed a bird when it flew into it thinking it was flying into another wooded area. I also get a few bird kills every year due to having so many large windows in my house. They didn't address the bird issue, but I do hope they haven't had any bird kill issues with the mirror. Other than that, such a COOL house! I would love to live there. EDIT; I just read Kirsten's reply to a comment concerning birds--she said the owners told her that they have not had any bird kills, perhaps bc of the distortion of the mirror. So good to know, thanks Kirsten!

    • @gracec3418

Sasha - you can buy small bird transfers that adhere easily to the inside surface of windows. If a bird sees a bird in the distance, they change course slightly so as not to risk collision.
I had some black ones on a square bay window some years' ago, as I was told some birds had hit the glass - because they could see through the bay from one side to the other, they tried to fly straight through, not realizing there was glass in between. I've seen some really pretty coloured ones on-line - Nightingales, Humming Birds etc. And I think you can also get birds of prey, if that might suit better for big windows. Worth looking into, anyway, as it might save a few lives. The Greeks believed birds are the messengers of the Gods.

I love that there is no lawn! Rather the small pool defines a spacial "courtyard", albeit informal. Its impressive that the designer placed as much value as they did on the trees. Most people would view them as getting in the way and need to be removed and then plant new trees that would take 50 years to replace the same "forest" effect. By that time, the office/home would likely have lived out it's useful life.

Certainly this design solves a lot of space problems while feeling expansive yet still compact. That you have cleanly packed your private+public office, kitchen, living room all into one and it blends nicely. Maybe if you could have a stone top that colour matches your desk top; this would look so uniform and be easier to cook there.
Probably the greatest lesson is transforming a closet/drawers area into a single wall so at first glance, the façade does its job in hiding utility.
