Pretty much immediately if you unravel 0.6 cm to 1 cm (1/4" to 3/8") . I've washed napkins like these many times and if they still unravel it's mostly on the first wash and just a couple of threads, after that the edges settle as they sort of felt together. If the fabric is very loosely woven it might take a few more washes though.

Can you use cotton?
Yes, you can! I find linen is a little more absorbing, but cotton works too and there’s more available in fun prints
