Aaron talking about Krispy Kreme giving out a donut per A on a report card reminded me of Pizza Hut having the Book It award, which is where if you read a certain number of books over summer break they would give you a personal pan pizza. I loved it. I still have my Book It medal on my shelf in my office.
Nate talking about rolling into church late reminded me of a time when our family of nine arrived at revival service to hear a visiting preacher who was friends with my dad. The congregation was already singing when we arrived. Assuming we were a few minutes late, the nine of us proceeded to the only pew where we could all fit-the front row, of course-with all eyes watching us. When the song ended, the preacher called on my daddy to say the benediction. The service had begun an hour earlier.
Bates is absolutely hilarious. He has some very slept on jokes which the other members of the pod fail to acknowledge. And Bates has a lot of good points during many discussions. Aaron and Nate are unfairly harsh to him. Bates is my favorite member of the pod
Came here from a TikTok clip of the donut bit, so am new to the pod and gotta say, it’s funny seeing that this dynamic is present here (one guy who’s kind of the outsider/runt of the group, but certain fans swear they’re gold). So many successful pods/shows with engaged fanbases have this dynamic. Forming a theory that it’s actually super engaging and good for building fandom. There’s in-groups and out-groups, and people in each think the other are wrong. I’m on a bender, but it’s fascinating to me right now. Wonder if these “social dynamics” of popular pods are being studied, and if there’s non-obvious dynamics like the “runt” that actually move the needle. Edit: through the bulk of this episode and this guy is a goober. Get the vibe that Nate legit doesn’t respect him? I’m intrigued either way, and kind of want to know more, which lends credence to the theory. It’s car crash-esque, will he embarrass himself even worse this ep? Will he have a zinger? Are they getting truly sick of him and think they need to remove him from the show? I think it adds an aspect that is prevalent in a lot of friend groups, and prob helps with the parasocial aspect of being a fan of a group of dudes hanging out/shooting the shit together. Every group has a runt. Also is he the guy who does the prep sheet? Any guy who wants to be on mic/cam and still has the task of the prep sheet has to be the runt 9 times out of 10
I was summoned to jury duty in downtown Portland for a 6 week trial. On the summons they recommended we take public transportation to avoid issues with parking near the courthouse. When I arrived I was informed the trial was for a man who stabbed people on public transportation. I was not selected, but I definitely did not enjoy the ride back home on the MAX line. In Pa you should only be called once every 3 or 4 years for Jury Duty. I got called 3 years in a row and showed up everytime hoping to be picked from the pool, never was my name called😂. The next year, I got called again and it was on my Birthday, I called the Courthouse and said, "Look, I'm all for doing my civic duty, in fact I'd love to be picked but the last 3 years my name was never called and now this time it's on my BIRTHDAY and I have plans!" The lady asked my name and when I told her she responded, "Oh for Pete sake, I told them to take your name out of the pool, I recognize your name! You don't have to come, your excused. " I haven't been called since, that was 15 years ago😂.
As a professional musician, everyone in my network is well aware of what plosives are. I don’t wanna make Nate’s head spin, but there’s also a term for when words have lots of “s”, “z”, or “ch” sounds called, “sibilance”. These terms are actually very practical when it comes to EQ’ing vocals because they signify a specific frequency range generally associated with those consonants.
I worked as an intern at my local radio station and was cutting a commercial that had a lot of "p" words. The owner of the station accused me of "popping my peas". I said "I haven't been eating in here," and they all laughed at me. If only I had Aaron land to teach me plosive I wouldn't have felt so dumb!

I'm sure it's because I'm part of the uncultured "Ninja Assassin interest group", but the Olympic Opening Ceremony should just be replaced with some giant competition between all of the Olympic competitors. Imagine over 10,000 athletes all competing in a Rock, Paper, Scissors competition. It would take 13-14 rounds to get down to a single winner. Got to meet Aaron at the Yee Haw Hee Haw Fest in Billings MT! I literally gasped when he walked into the bar. It may have been a tough crowd but it was one of the best nights out we’ve had since we moved here! This was our second time seeing Aaron perform, first was in Nashville at the Grand Ol Opry in 2021. Nate, your career has positively blown up and you deserve every bit of it! ADDITIONALLY, your success somehow makes me feel that this country is still at its core the country that I have known and loved for as long as I can remember which is most of 65 years. Your appeal seems ubiquitous. This was proved by your triumph at SNL One might have thought this was not possible with a 'clean' comedian, but they would be wrong. The majority of the country doesn't want crazy on either side of the divide, just normal. Forgive if you feel that I am exaggerating or putting you in a position that is uncomfortable. I realize that at the end of the day, your success is because you are very very funny but it also means more to me. I say thank you!
It's always great to hear an Anthony Edwards shout-out! He does say things that I have to look up. He talks about people being SAC. That means Solid As Concrete. I'll go proofread this now.
Matt McCraw - Great episode! Big-swimmer Bates is normally on the ball with funny little comments, but one got missed this week: On the joke about the Secretary of the Interior, no one pointed out that everything that person oversees is actually the EXTERIOR. Love the show, love you guys, you're a force of joy that is much needed.
Aaron was right about my comment about the trees in the background annoying you guys and weeks later the location is changed. Also, for someone who’s last name has been butchered by so many people: Boles, Nate said it right the first time.
(CHEER-ih-KOH 😆) I work in sales and spend a lot of my days driving around Central and upstate New York. This podcast makes the drive so much more enjoyable. I’ve already listened to the “Best-Of” episode twice. John is my favorite fill-in for Dusty, as I feel he brings out the feistier side of Nate. And I did think Brian’s “no shame” comment to John deserved more attention 😆 congrats on the new studio and keep being funny. Go jackets
Acting like the Paris Olympic Committee should cater to Americans🫣 The opening ceremonies are always kind of strange. I’m sure when Vancouver hosted the Winter Olympics, not everyone understood the historical references, but as Canadians we were proud to showcase it. Part of hosting is to showcase your country’s history/culture/sensibilities. Enough with the constant persecution complex.
My mom worked at JCPenney at Rivergate and the day of the tornado she was off work but took a coworker to lunch and after the tornado hit, on the news, they said there was one person unaccounted for and it was Mom's coworker. They were just having a good lunch then went to Krispy Kreme. 😂
I’ve felt like this show hasn’t been as good the last few weeks/months (maybe it was me) and I was considering not listening anymore. but I think the new set has brought a lot of energy back to the show! Everyone seems so much more fun and happy again. I’m loving it and here to stay!!
That was a great show! I continually enjoy the podcast, but that reminded me of your first days when you were stuck at home and couldn't do comedy anywhere. I think having the studio in a club is genius and it's really helping you guys harness your energy
I had jury duty years ago in a hicktown in TN. I was juror #7. It was about dirt car racing! The guy tried to hit a competitor by going into the crowd with the car, hit a kid, who was Lifelighted to Vandy and injured the intended guy! It was "bananas." Lol A week long trial, longest in many years in that county, and we found the guy guilty. I had to be the one to stand up and say in deliberation, "We ARE talking about a guy TRYING to hurt people with a racecar!" The guy was found guilty and served time. I was with John. This was my CIVIL DUTY!! Dang it! I took it seriously!!! I did have to call my husband and say....meet me at this place, cause this is gonna get BAD!!! I need to get out of Dodge!!"😂😂
Speech therapist here. English has six plosives or “stops” : p, b, t, d, k, and g. These types of sounds are made by a constriction in the vocal tract which stops airflow
Young Dusty looks like Draco Malfoy! which is really funny since Draco Malfoy is pretty much evil and Dusty is so pure of heart that he wouldn't even watch Harry Potter ... to know who Draco Malfoy is.
John Crist thinking you won't get a jury summons for TWENTY YEARS after you get one is crazy. States may be different but in Colorado, you can not be subject to serve on a jury more than once per calendar year. If you get a summons and it gets excused, so you never have to report, you can go back in the jury pool and be called again, though likely not for a calendar year. I will tell you I served on a jury 10 years ago in a case for a child abuse death (this was before I was married, before I had kids, I was politically neutral and worked a job where I could make me own hours, the perfect juror). After being selected to serve on that jury, I started getting jury summons every single calendar year. I think when you are determined to be a "good juror candidate" you are selected more often. I have gotten a jury summons every year since serving on that jury; my husband has gotten 3 in the 15 years we have been together.
Just got tickets to see Aaron in Lexington, KY this weekend and going to grab some to see Dusty in September in KY. Hope to see Nate and Brian one day as well.
My ears perked up when he said he was at Jordan Creek Mall in DSM and then it made sense he was doing a private show for Randy Edeker's retirement. Wish I could have caught that show!
As a musician I learned about plosive sounds when recording for the first time. We use pop-filters to tone down the plosive sounds or "pops" when singing.

Idk, I never get to church on time. It doesn't matter how much I prep the day before, I can never make it on time. And I'm not even doing a 5 mile walk before.
1:20:35 Nate saying " I think 50% go to church and other 50% know where they're going. " 💀😂😂
1:49:21 when Brian asks Nate " You want me to say my criticism?" and Nate says "no, what is it?"
What an episode. Huge laughs all the way through, SO funny!
Love the Jordan Creek Mall (in Des Moines) shout-out. We love our Scheels! Hopefully Dusty visits it when he comes to town in November
Thank you so much for listening to the folks and making those changes in the studio and filming the podcast. You guys are the best! Especially the guys who are here today. 😅
Always great to hear an Anthony Edwards shout-out! He does say things that I have to look up. He talks about people being SAC. That means Solid As Concrete.
No one acknowledged Aaron's "It was BUSSIN" line at 1:28 but I was rolling 😂
I intended to see Aaron perform in Billings, MT but things came up, so I watched his UA-cam videos and pretended I was at the show. Wish I’d seen you in person, hope you had a great crowd! Come back to MT again, and bring the Nateland crew with you! Stoked for your special! (Is it cool for 40 year olds to say stoked?) Take care, guys, and thanks for the laughs. Keep truckin’!
Great start to the morning!! Love you guys.
I picture Eric carrying Nate in one of those baby bjorn on his back lol.
Thank you for visiting the homeland of my ancestors… IOWA! If I’d never been in the Scheels in that Des Moines Mall while visiting my cousins I would never have believed such a place existed - they were trying to describe it to me and my brain didn’t have a folder for that input. I remember y’all talking about it on an earlier episode - unreal!! Love listening to the podcast - y’all make me laugh out loud - that’s what it’s all about, right?
John needs to become a permanent member of Nateland. Every episode his is in is HYS👏TER👏I👏CAL👏. The dynamic of the group with John involved is exponentially funnier!!!
Breakfast saying “at least I’m not him!” Was just as good as his stealing second base story!
this was the best podcast yet! All the guys were in a laughing mood , there was hardly a moment that they weren't all laughing. It was a refreshing pick up to my day! I shared with friends as a must see!
Go jackets
99% of the complaints about the Olympic Opening Ceremonies from the Entire World are in the red parts of the last US Presidential Election map...
So people who are offended by blasphemy are complaining about it? Thanks captain obvious!
Yes, and you can clearly see the "apology" was for America's benefit (meaning US sponsorship giving lots of $$$ to the IOC).
My mom worked at JCPenney at Rivergate and the day of the tornado she was off work but took a coworker to lunch and after the tornado hit, on the news, they said there was one person unaccounted for and it was Mom's coworker. They were just having a good lunch then went to Krispy Kreme. 😂
Pestie?? Y'all really gonna do Dusty like that? #spectracide
I attend church and listen to Nate like this to do the toll if you go to church
The podcaster thing had me in tears 😂😂😂
In Aaron’s defense, I’m a classical singer, and I teach diction classes, so the word “plosive” comes up pretty often in my world 😆
Just got tickets to see Aaron in Lexington, KY this weekend and going to grab some to see Dusty in September in KY. Hope to see Nate and Brian one day as well.
My ears perked up when he said he was at Jordan Creek Mall in DSM and then it made sense he was doing a private show for Randy Edeker's retirement. Wish I could have caught that show!
Didn’t know the New York Times and Wall Street Journal merged-thanks, Nate! 😂😂
Love the new desk + seating arrangements! Nateland is feeling "right" once again
I wanna see the signage: Nateland, Batesland, Dustyland, and Weberland! Come on guys, the four of you makes this podcast something special. Team up!
As a musician I learned about plosive sounds when recording for the first time. We use pop-filters to tone down the plosive sounds or "pops" when singing.
Love the no topic format! Its fantastic!!
Im now realizing the amount of comedians we may see now that they record before New Material Monday! 🎉
So today I learned the meaning of the word plosive. Today, it is likely the last day I will use this word. I’m with Nate on this one 😁
Saturday night church here to represent. No early morning wake up on Sunday :D
Aaron’s senior portrait looks like Moe from The Three Stooges and Dusty looks like he could be a third brother if the Sprouse twins were triplets 😂
I'm just here for the setup." 😂
Rhett Jackson here - My wife tells me that if I wore a fashion trend when it was new (bell bottoms, Checkerboard Vans) then I’m NOT allowed to wear it when it comes back into fashion.
Bebops senior picture was brought to us today... by Technicolor
Lol. Underrated comment of the day!
Nate, I'm so excited to see you in Halifax this Friday! This podcast was fantastic! 😂😂😂
