  • I admin a Facebook group for beginning and intermediate players and the topic of long tones comes up probably every day. A lot of advanced players tell the lesser-experienced players to do them, but then the question becomes "why and how?"

I did this long tones exercise all of March 2024. It was definitely challenging but I stuck with it even though counting in my head and intonation was a struggle. I've only been playing 7 months though. I will do it again sometime in the future.

Interesting. I've just been just going from F down to B flat holding each note for 15-20sec while watching a tuner.
Also when you demonstrated I didn't here any metronome beats, were they in your headphones?

Use your ears to tune, vary your volume to build air support and control. There’s lots of different ways to do it

A beginner has to use the tuner. A seasoned player could use their ears.

Don't tune by watching the tuner, tune by listening.

Which is literally why I suggest using drones rather than a tuner
