Thank you for the lecture, Mr. Macintosh! I've been trying to get more familiar with the development side of Business Central, and I've found the guides on your company's channel to be immensely helpful. I'm not sure if this comment section is monitored, but if it is, I do have a question regarding your cleanse - script - migrate method: What would you say "scripting" usually entails here? Is it simply appending incomplete records, as you would when cleansing a database, or does it refer to something else?
We treat any move to Business Central as an opportunity to clean data from your current ERP. Given the volume of data most of our clients have within Dynamics GP, we’ve needed to find ways to cleanse that data in a mass fashion. Depending on your comfort level, some clients will complete those updates directly in SQL against the GP database, others will export Smartlists to Excel and cleanse in the UI from there. Within Dynamics GP, you will need to confirm a number of tasks prior to converting to Business Central. Microsoft has done a good job at documenting these. For example, Item master records in GP can be longer than in BC & likely need to be edited prior to migrating. Further, BC databases over a certain size don’t perform well. Some clients will take this as an opportunity to clear attachments, excess data, etc. Thus, when we refer to scripting, it’s a matter of completing all these tasks in a mass fashion against your current GP database. WebSan has developed a number of queries that allow us to find and clean data within GP if you are looking for assistance with the Business Central implementation.
