I think they used Lion to make them as strong as a man. Because while Queens are strong but they tend to be second only to the king. So by them saying "queen like a lion" they are saying that they are a queen with the strength and power of a king who is above all.

I think they refer to LION as in the actual ruler of the jungle, regardless the gender. In fact, if I'm not mistaken, lion pride live in a perfect balance of patriarchal and matriarchal society
Pretty interesting that you said that the song might not have that "mass appeal", the song is actually doing really well on the korean charts, being the highest idol group song in melon for most of the day since the MV released.
I think queendom was a major reason for that tbh
@@asadorama When it was released it didn't really had that good rankings on charts, Mamamoo and Oh My Girl's songs did better. But after the finale performances Lion started getting those new peaks and stayed pretty well on like top 30, 20 of all the charts. And then the MV was released and up til now it's still on top 21 of iChart.

@@gorgeousspears971 I'm definitely not surprised, I think without the promotions on queendom, even after the mv release, it would've ranked lower, while I do like the song I think it's lacking something that most title tracks have like the catchiness that makes you keep listening and stucks with you, I didn't really have that with lion if I'm making any sense it's still a good song tho
I'm so earlyyy. I hope you noticed the lyrics to Soyeon's rap. Only Soyeon could rap that because she is the one that had to overcome a lot of adversity and hate. You really have to have gone through shit from the bottom to talk about getting to the top. Respect.
The song was made for the Finale of "Queendom". In my opinion, it suits the show the most out of all the other songs. When I first heard it, I really loved it but I also thought that it might not be everyone's cup of tea. But that's what I love about (G)I-DLE, they don't make music that's trendy and that has the "mass appeal", they actually make you like their style no matter your taste, which really makes them different and it makes their music genuine and unique.

I think partially yes re. not using "lioness" but also, what *IS* a lioness? It's a female lion, right? So the term lion equally applies to both sexes.
Except all the lion imagery in the MV features male/maned lions.
Read the sentence: "A lion is a queen." Isn't your kneejerk reaction that something is off?
It's not about the term "lion" technically being male-specific vs unisex. It's about the fact that the terms "lion" and "king" are inextricably bound together by culture; that *culture itself* not only genders the lion, but uses it as a masculine symbol of great power. (G)-Idle saying they're "Lion Queens" is not a happenstance. It's very purposeful.
I actually 100% agree with what you said about lion vs lioness, and in truth, the lyric itself doesn't even need to be debated. You can just watch the MV: All the lions you see are male. The "kings of the jungle," just like you said, David. It's not even worth trying to say, "They didn't use lion instead of lioness for any particular reason," or "Lioness means the same thing." (There *are* such things as maned lionesses, and they are TOTALLY BADASS, but tbh if that's their specific intent it's a very, very, VERY meta one.)
Anyway, the overall theme here is clear. It's a story specifically about being a woman, and about how being overtly powerful and a woman at the same time often requires a certain degree of endurance, pain tolerance, and loss of the gentle/submissive/virginal/sheltered traits traditionally considered "feminine." Creating another style* of womanhood and femininity using classically "kingly" iconography and language transforms these previously daunting requirements into points of pride (haw haw, pride, get it... oy), much like they are in masculinity's traditional value system.
"Nothing can cage me, not even pain." / "Nothing can tame me, not even love."
* A more traditional style of femininity is certainly still valid and can possess its own kind of power. This only represents some of the struggles certain women face when trying to depart from tradition.

yassss David was waiting for you to react to G-Idle. I am so happy that people acknowledge soyeon! She works so freakin hard and wants her group to shine. When she said she wrote this song about herself I was even more shocked. To be so young and have people criticize you for the way you look to you having no talent can be so heartbreaking. I really admire her for her strength, talent and her leadership skills. She is also gorgeous , I don’t know how people think she is ugly. They need to get their eyes checked . She was the first one that caught my eye. Her teammates trust her and she really never lets them down!! They are all queens and I hope they continue to do well!!!

It's interesting you said mass appeal cause this song has been charting all charts since it's release. I agree I stopped breathing during Soyeon's part. It amazes me that Soyeon (21 years old) came up with the whole concept, choreography, lyrics, produced, and organized the MV set. She truly is a genius!!! The song doing well after the queendom's finale ended to be exact, after their clips in queendom were/are trending. This song was climbing up gradually in charts. It's nice to know koreans love this song bcos i also think this kind of sound won't appeal to mass listeners in korea.

I've watched many reactions to lion, most are western people and some are koreans.
not trying to stereotypes but based on what i saw in their reactions koreans barely even talk about the vocals and such and focused more on the concept and meaning of the song while the others talked about mot only the rap part but also the killing part of the song such as the pre chorus of miyeon-yuqi, high notes of minnie etc.

I agree with what David said about the usage of Lion but I also think aside from it being much better to ryhme with, is that the portrayal of a lion is seen as someone dominant a protective father figure to his pack and his territory while a Lioness are more intertwined with of course like being a mother to her children or so what Nat Geo told me ahahaha so if they used Lioness it would reflect them as soft yet fierce unlike a lion is more seen soley as fierce, but of course they maybe seen as a softie but lioness are also amazing hunters more so to their lion husbands especially when taking care of younger lion and lioness' that's all ahahha. please do correct me if I am wrong

A lion is not necessary a male. A group of lions usually consist of several females and their offspring and a small number of related adult males. Although there are female lions or lioness in the pride it is called a pride of lions instead of a pride of lions and lionESSes because the term lion DOES INCLUDE the female. The term female lion or lioness is only used when we intend to emphasize the female gender of a lion species.
A king is a male and a queen is a female so a lion queen is already a female lion. We don’t double emphasize the female term and call it the lioness queen which is so redundant .The term lion DOES NOT EXCLUDE the female thus lion queen is correct not lionESS queen.
