Thin Lizzy did not release a bad album. I'm partial to the original trio with Eric Bell, but I love it all. Lynott is a legend. Brian Downey is criminally underrated, too.
I'm not a fan of the last two albums because I think they got away from who they were and were chasing the more popular sound at the time but I can understand why some people really like them. Vagabonds is probably my second favorite album of theirs and I really like the debut (Honesty is No Excuse is one of my favorite songs), BUT Shades of a Blue Orphanage is not good at all. There are a couple of OK songs but I can easily go without ever hearing it again.
It certainly is,it has such a tone and depth to it and they actually IMPROVE every single song compared to the studio version. Tremendous live album and sits alongside Who live at Leeds (deluxe edition),Pulse tour,Floyd,Humble Pie Rockin the Fillmore and Frampton Comes Alive. Rory Gallagher and Gary Moore not far behind either.
Phil Lynott WAS Thin Lizzy. He started the band, was the songwriter, lead singer, bassist and arranger. I think you guys would really enjoy Parisienne Walkways, Emerald, and The Warrior

Nick nailed it. Gary Moore played with the band in for 3 separate periods. See the DVD "Gary Moore and Friends - One Night in Dublin - Tribute to Phil Lynott " (2006), where he gets together with his former bandmates to play mostly Thin Lizzy songs. He also has one "Tribute To Jimi" where he plays all Hendrix material (but it would be best to hear the originals first).
The Nightlife album was their first album as a four piece, featuring two new guitarist an American called Scott Gorham and a Chap from Scotland called Brian Robertson. For what it's worth you should give the Live and Dangerous a listen and that's from 1978

Thin Lizzy was a great Irish band. I was lucky to see them a couple of times live in the mid/late 1970's in the UK. Phil Lynott was a brilliant front man, singer, bass player. Enjoy!

The original band had closer ties to Irish music - just listen to the title track of Vagabonds. BTW the late Phil Lynott was only half-Irish and half-Guyanese and he was born in England. I like all the lineups but Eric Bell was the most original guitarist ever to play with them.

I saw them opening for Queen! Gary Moore filled in for Brian Robertson that night! Phil Lynot was a great bassist and singer - band leader! Not bad for a bunch of Irish lads!

Brian Robertson said he couldn't improve on Gary's solo so that's why Gary's solo was left in. Also I believe Gary said he co-wrote Still in Love with You, but Phil didn't give him any credit!
Hi NicknLex, so glad you have reacted to some 'Lizzy'. Saw them live more then any other band in the 70's and they were always awesome! Eric Bell was original lead guitarist on 'The Rocker' but left because could not handle being famous! Since then had Gary Moore twice & Brian Robertson Scott Gorham on twin lead guitars. Still in love with you is even better on Live & Dangerous imo. Too many great tracks to throw at you all at once but try The Cowboy Song, Vagabonds of the Western World, Emerald & Rosin Dubh ( Black Rose ): A rock legend!. Also Horslips are another 70's Irish band worth reacting to.
When I saw them at Ronny Scott's it was Scott Gorham and the great Snowy White who people tend to forget about and I personally rate above Moore. If I remember correctly a young Midge Ure was on Keyboards.

Absolutely, CR!! Everything you texted was pure Veritas, and I stated in an earlier comment that Thin Lizzy are the greatest Irish rock band ever!! U2 aspired to be as good as Thin Lizzy. Bass player extraordinaire and main songwriter Phil Lynott set a standard for all Irish rockers to strive for. Though he had his demons, he by all accounts was a decent, honorable man. Contrary to Bono he paid his taxes, and if he had a charitable foundation he would not have ripped it off.
Thin Lizzy went through several lineup changes during the 70s. At the beginning the band was a power trio with Eric Bell on guitar. That lineup recorded The Rocker. Phil Lynott played bass and sang while Brian Downey played the drums. Lynott and Downey were in all versions of the band. The classic mid 70s lineup of Thin Lizzy was a four piece with guitarists Scott Gorham and Brian Robertson. After Brian Robertson left other guitarists that took his place in Thin Lizzy were Gary Moore, Snowy White and John Sykes.

Yay! Happy you've discovered one of the greatest bands of all time. Truly! I had the good fortune to discover them before they had their breakout hit in the U.S. with the "Jailbreak" album. I had been introduced to the album "Fighting", which was released just previous to "Jailbreak ", by a college radio DJ. It remains one of my all time favorite albums to this day. Their entire catalog is filled with gems and epics. The "Nightlife" album I guarantee will be Lex's favorite! Enjoy your musical journey with them!

Lizzy have so many great songs - Jailbreak, Emerald, Black Rose, Rosalie (a Bob Seger cover), Killer on the Loose, Whiskey in the Jar (a trad folk song also covered by Metallica), Cowboy Song (covered by Supersuckers) and on and on.
Thin Lizzy were a great band that specialised in melodic hard rock songs, there were a lot of rock bands who ploughed the same furrow back then, UFO were another prime example. Thin Lizzy even had hit singles in the UK, their first being Whiskey In The Jar an old traditional Irish folk tune first popularised by The Dubliners. The first song you heard The Rocker was from Vagabonds Of The Western Worlld their third album, and last album with guitarist Eric Bell. They were still a three piece back then with Brian Downey on drums, and the incomparable Phil Lynott on vocals and bass. The classic lineup though featured Lynott, Downey, and Brian Robertson (who improbably joined Motorhead after he left Lizzy) and Scott Gorham on guitars. They had a dual guitar sound similar to Wishbone Ash. Normally I'd always recommend listening to a bands studio versions of songs, but you have to listen to Live And Dangerous, one of,the best live albums ever. There's always been controversy how many overdubs were done on it, whether it was all 'truly live', but it is such a brilliant album.Side 3, which goes from Cowboy Song, The Boys Are Back In Town, Don't Believe A Word, Warriors and finally Are You Ready is one of the best sequences of songs on any live album. They were one of the best live bands I ever saw., think I saw them 3 times although the memorys a bit hazy. Didn't get to see the classic lineup I mentioned, nor with Gary Moore, although I did see Gary solo. I first saw them in 1982 when Snowy White was with them (occasional Pink Floyd sideman), on the Renegade Tour. Later John Sykes joined them formerly of Tygers Of Pan Tang and after Lizzy he gained more fame when he joined Whitesnake. The last time I saw them was Reading Festival 1983, which was Lynotts last gig in Britain, he sadly died three years later. Still In Love With You was Brian Robertsons tour de force, but the version on Live And Dangerous is the one, he just soars.

Thin Lizzy were huge here in the UK, especially through the late 70s. The main man, Phil Lynott, wrote the songs, played the bass, and sang the vocals! THE version of Still In Love With You is on their 1978 album Live & Dangerous (there's also a great version by Sade!). It's interesting that you mention Gary Moore, as he was a member at various times in their career! If you can, check out the video version of Live & Dangerous; they were an amazing live act. I saw them supporting Bachman-Turner Overdrive in 1975! Other top songs include Emerald, Roisin Dubh (Black Rose), Warriors, Bad Reputation, The Sun Goes Down, ... Enjoy!
Saw Thin Lizzy live in 1983 when I was 14. The last Lizzy tour before he died. Still haven't seen a band that compares live. Live and dangerous is one of the best live albums ever recorded. Iron maiden were hugely influenced by Phil Lynott and Thin Lizzy.
Its been far too long since I've listened to any Thin Lizzy. Your reaction will change that for sure. I saw Lizzie live many times back in the early 70s... Another Greyhound pub in Croydon venue regular, and one of the best live bands at the time. Nicks comments about Gary Moore was spot on, as Gary was one of the guitarists for a time, alongside Scott Gorham. I'm sure I won't be alone in recommending their Live And Dangerous album..... Just grab a beer, stick on some headphones, and jump back some to live 70s heaven..Cheers, Bob.....

Fantastic I was taken to their first UK gig for my birthday on 23rd March 1971 at Ronnie Scott's club by my older brother and been a fan ever since. Check out "Diddy Levine" still one of the greatest song they did. In my opinion.

Big props to Nick for this request, it was a great way to introduce you guys to a few different sides of the band. They cover a lot of different styles but always inject their strong, unique identity into it. I had only ever heard “The Boys Are Back in Town” until a couple years ago. When I finally dove into some of their albums I quickly became hooked and they’re now one of my favourite bands of all time! It’s a shame they’re still unknown by most people. The first song you heard was from their original lineup with Eric Bell as the lone guitarist, before he was replaced by the duo of Scott Gorham and Brian Robertson, completing the “classic” lineup along with founding members Phil Lynott on bass and vocals and Brian Downey on drums. As some other commenters have said, Gary Moore played the solo on “Still In Love with You”, he also played on the whole Black Rose album. Absolutely fantastic player! You guys definitely need to hear some more of their songs, it’s hard to pick just a few but I would suggest “Wild One”, “Emerald”, “With Love” or “The Sun Goes Down”. For a certain while there was also GARY MOORE member of Thin Lizzy, that's why you thought of him right away. The reason why I liked Still in love with you not as much as the others is, that on the Live album Live and Dangerous it somehow interrupts the hard rocking setlist. :-) It's so sad that Phil Lynott passed away in 1986 at the age of 36 ... he simply hadn't been able to resist to alcohol and drugs. I lived there for a short while. Never met any natives that could make the "th" sound. So they pronounce it "Tin." I was very surprised by their knowledge of American folk music. On the average, I'd say they know more about it than US citizens! Country Roads by John Denver seems to be a favorite ;-)

Live & Dangerous double album captures this, but they left some killer cuts off it, namely Opium Trail and Johnny. These can be found on the Philadelphia 77 tapes. All on UA-cam. Enjoy the dive! 😎
What a great and genuine reaction to my favorite band of all times. I was lucky to see them in my Dutch home town with the original singer Phil Lynott. Just to recap - first song is off last album with first label and founder guitarist Eric Bell. They were folksy and low-key psychedelic and had had one hit (Whiskey in the Jar). Eric Bell jumped ship mid gig and they were dropped by Decca. Singer/bass player Philip Lynott recruited childhood friend Gary Moore to cover dates, then they thought they’d get two guitarists to not get left high and dry again. After two guys that didn’t work out they got Scott Gorham and Brian Roberson in for Nightlife _but_ that tasty solo was Gary Moore’s off of the demo, they couldn’t improve on it. On Live and dangerous Brian Robertson has evolved it a bit, but it’s basically Gary’s solo still. Robertson basically ended Thin Lizzy in the states by getting injured in a bar fight so they had to cancel a tour when they had been about to kick it up a gear in the US after the boys are back in town, so Philip was angry with him. Bad Reputation was _supposed_ to be a trio, but they brought Brian back under caution and he delivered some of the greatest solos, but he didn’t make the album art. More lineup changes followed (Gary came back for a bit, among other things), but that’s another story
Eric Bell played guitar on this album. He was followed by some stellar guitar players afterwards like Gary Moore, Scott Gorham, and John Sykes. Brian Downey played the drums and Phil Lynott sang and played bass of course. Massively underrated band in the US.

I'm not a fan of the last two albums because I think they got away from who they were and were chasing the more popular sound at the time but I can understand why some people really like them. Vagabonds is probably my second favorite album of theirs and I really like the debut (Honesty is No Excuse is one of my favorite songs), BUT Shades of a Blue Orphanage is not good at all. There are a couple of OK songs but I can easily go without ever hearing it again.

Nick nailed it. Gary Moore played with the band in for 3 separate periods. See the DVD "Gary Moore and Friends - One Night in Dublin - Tribute to Phil Lynott " (2006), where he gets together with his former bandmates to play mostly Thin Lizzy songs. He also has one "Tribute To Jimi" where he plays all Hendrix material (but it would be best to hear the originals first).
The Nightlife album was their first album as a four piece, featuring two new guitarist an American called Scott Gorham and a Chap from Scotland called Brian Robertson. For what it's worth you should give the Live and Dangerous a listen and that's from 1978

The original band had closer ties to Irish music - just listen to the title track of Vagabonds. BTW the late Phil Lynott was only half-Irish and half-Guyanese and he was born in England. I like all the lineups but Eric Bell was the most original guitarist ever to play with them.

I was fortunate to see Thin Lizzy live in 1975 and 1976, here in the UK. They were dynamite live. Just a fantastic rock band.

Eric Bell was original lead guitarist on 'The Rocker' but left because could not handle being famous! Since then had Gary Moore twice & Brian Robertson Scott Gorham on twin lead guitars. Still in love with you is even better on Live & Dangerous imo. Too many great tracks to throw at you all at once but try The Cowboy Song, Vagabonds of the Western World, Emerald & Rosin Dubh ( Black Rose ): A rock legend!. Also Horslips are another 70's Irish band worth reacting to.
When I saw them at Ronny Scott's it was Scott Gorham and the great Snowy White who people tend to forget about and I personally rate above Moore. If I remember correctly a young Midge Ure was on Keyboards.

Absolutely, CR!! Everything you texted was pure Veritas, and I stated in an earlier comment that Thin Lizzy are the greatest Irish rock band ever!! U2 aspired to be as good as Thin Lizzy. Bass player extraordinaire and main songwriter Phil Lynott set a standard for all Irish rockers to strive for. Though he had his demons, he by all accounts was a decent, honorable man. Contrary to Bono he paid his taxes, and if he had a charitable foundation he would not have ripped it off.
Thin Lizzy went through several lineup changes during the 70s. At the beginning the band was a power trio with Eric Bell on guitar. That lineup recorded The Rocker. Phil Lynott played bass and sang while Brian Downey played the drums. Lynott and Downey were in all versions of the band. The classic mid 70s lineup of Thin Lizzy was a four piece with guitarists Scott Gorham and Brian Robertson. After Brian Robertson left other guitarists that took his place in Thin Lizzy were Gary Moore, Snowy White and John Sykes.
The greatest Thin Lizzy song is Borderline. Also Boys are Back in Town, Opium Trail, Don't Believe a Word. Go for the studio versions.

Yay! Happy you've discovered one of the greatest bands of all time. Truly! I had the good fortune to discover them before they had their breakout hit in the U.S. with the "Jailbreak" album. I had been introduced to the album "Fighting", which was released just previous to "Jailbreak ", by a college radio DJ. It remains one of my all time favorite albums to this day. Their entire catalog is filled with gems and epics. The "Nightlife" album I guarantee will be Lex's favorite! Enjoy your musical journey with them!

Lizzy have so many great songs - Jailbreak, Emerald, Black Rose, Rosalie (a Bob Seger cover), Killer on the Loose, Whiskey in the Jar (a trad folk song also covered by Metallica), Cowboy Song (covered by Supersuckers) and on and on.

Thin Lizzy were a great band that specialised in melodic hard rock songs, there were a lot of rock bands who ploughed the same furrow back then, UFO were another prime example. Thin Lizzy even had hit singles in the UK, their first being Whiskey In The Jar an old traditional Irish folk tune first popularised by The Dubliners. The first song you heard The Rocker was from Vagabonds Of The Western Worlld their third album, and last album with guitarist Eric Bell. They were still a three piece back then with Brian Downey on drums, and the incomparable Phil Lynott on vocals and bass. The classic lineup though featured Lynott, Downey, and Brian Robertson (who improbably joined Motorhead after he left Lizzy) and Scott Gorham on guitars. They had a dual guitar sound similar to Wishbone Ash. Normally I'd always recommend listening to a bands studio versions of songs, but you have to listen to Live And Dangerous, one of,the best live albums ever. There's always been controversy how many overdubs were done on it, whether it was all 'truly live', but it is such a brilliant album.Side 3, which goes from Cowboy Song, The Boys Are Back In Town, Don't Believe A Word, Warriors and finally Are You Ready is one of the best sequences of songs on any live album. They were one of the best live bands I ever saw., think I saw them 3 times although the memorys a bit hazy. Didn't get to see the classic lineup I mentioned, nor with Gary Moore, although I did see Gary solo. I first saw them in 1982 when Snowy White was with them (occasional Pink Floyd sideman), on the Renegade Tour. Later John Sykes joined them formerly of Tygers Of Pan Tang and after Lizzy he gained more fame when he joined Whitesnake. The last time I saw them was Reading Festival 1983, which was Lynotts last gig in Britain, he sadly died three years later. Still In Love With You was Brian Robertsons tour de force, but the version on Live And Dangerous is the one, he just soars.

Thin Lizzy were huge here in the UK, especially through the late 70s. The main man, Phil Lynott, wrote the songs, played the bass, and sang the vocals! THE version of Still In Love With You is on their 1978 album Live & Dangerous (there's also a great version by Sade!). It's interesting that you mention Gary Moore, as he was a member at various times in their career! If you can, check out the video version of Live & Dangerous; they were an amazing live act. I saw them supporting Bachman-Turner Overdrive in 1975! Other top songs include Emerald, Roisin Dubh (Black Rose), Warriors, Bad Reputation, The Sun Goes Down, ... Enjoy!
Saw Thin Lizzy live in 1983 when I was 14. The last Lizzy tour before he died. Still haven't seen a band that compares live. Live and dangerous is one of the best live albums ever recorded. Iron maiden were hugely influenced by Phil Lynott and Thin Lizzy.

Its been far too long since I've listened to any Thin Lizzy. Your reaction will change that for sure. I saw Lizzie live many times back in the early 70s... Another Greyhound pub in Croydon venue regular, and one of the best live bands at the time. Nicks comments about Gary Moore was spot on, as Gary was one of the guitarists for a time, alongside Scott Gorham. I'm sure I won't be alone in recommending their Live And Dangerous album..... One of the most underrated bands of all time. Check out the title track from their last album released in 1983 Thunder and Lightning... one of the heaviest songs you'll ever hear. John James Sykes from Whitesnake/Tygers of Pan Tang/Blue Murder on guitar.
They have the debut "Blue Murder" CD, so I HOPE they try them out. Another album produced by "Bob Rock" (Metallica "Black" album and the debut album of Kingdom Come).
Fantastic I was taken to their first UK gig for my birthday on 23rd March 1971 at Ronnie Scott's club by my older brother and been a fan ever since. Check out "Diddy Levine" still one of the greatest song they did. In my opinion.

Big props to Nick for this request, it was a great way to introduce you guys to a few different sides of the band. They cover a lot of different styles but always inject their strong, unique identity into it.
I had only ever heard “The Boys Are Back in Town” until a couple years ago. When I finally dove into some of their albums I quickly became hooked and they’re now one of my favourite bands of all time! It’s a shame they’re still unknown by most people.
The first song you heard was from their original lineup with Eric Bell as the lone guitarist, before he was replaced by the duo of Scott Gorham and Brian Robertson, completing the “classic” lineup along with founding members Phil Lynott on bass and vocals and Brian Downey on drums. As some other commenters have said, Gary Moore played the solo on “Still In Love with You”, he also played on the whole Black Rose album. Absolutely fantastic player!
You guys definitely need to hear some more of their songs, it’s hard to pick just a few but I would suggest “Wild One”, “Emerald”, “With Love” or “The Sun Goes Down”.

Front man/lead vocalist/bassist/writer, Phil Lynott, was a black Irishman. What a remarkable talent...poetic & soulful, yet firmly, hard rockin'. As others have testified, they're one or the pioneers of the tandem guitar riff.
"Rocker" had some Johnny Winter influence in it's lead work...again, on "Still in Love With You", Nick spotted the Carlos Santana influence, (especially the outro), in Moore's lead guitar.
☆ 45 years ago, this Friday, March 18, 1977, during a St. Patrick's Day ☘ hangover, I was fortunate enough to see Thin Lizzy, including Gary Moore, open for Queen.

Mastermind of the band was Phil Lynott, bass and vocals, on the first song Eric Bell was on guitar, then he left and they played for many years with Scott Gorham and Brian Robertston on guitar. For a certain while there was also GARY MOORE member of Thin Lizzy, that's why you thought of him right away. The reason why I liked Still in love with you not as much as the others is, that on the Live album Live and Dangerous it somehow interrupts the hard rocking setlist. :-)
It's so sad that Phil Lynott passed away in 1986 at the age of 36 ... he simply hadn't been able to resist to alcohol and drugs.

Thanks for the Thin Lizzy review. I am sure someone mentioned already that they are Irish and Gary Moore (also Irish) spent some time as a member of Thin Lizzy). I lived there for a short while. Never met any natives that could make the "th" sound. So they pronounce it "Tin." I was very surprised by their knowledge of American folk music. On the average, I'd say they know more about it than US citizens! Country Roads by John Denver seems to be a favorite ;-)
You should really listen too the Live And Dangerous version of Still In Love With You, It sooo good!
Love that you have had a deep dive into some lesser known tracks. Props to Nick for the suggestions. Live from 76 to 79 they were untouchable!! Live & Dangerous double album captures this, but they left some killer cuts off it, namely Opium Trail and Johnny. These can be found on the Philadelphia 77 tapes. All on UA-cam. Enjoy the dive! 😎

What a great and genuine reaction to my favorite band of all times. I was lucky to see them in my Dutch home town with the original singer Phil Lynott. You want a longer version of Still in love, there is a great one from the album Live and Dangourus. For Marley try the live of a blues singer live in Sweden. Enjoy!🤘
Just to recap - first song is off last album with first label and founder guitarist Eric Bell. They were folksy and low-key psychedelic and had had one hit (Whiskey in the Jar). Eric Bell jumped ship mid gig and they were dropped by Decca. Singer/bass player Philip Lynott recruited childhood friend Gary Moore to cover dates, then they thought they’d get two guitarists to not get left high and dry again. After two guys that didn’t work out they got Scott Gorham and Brian Roberson in for Nightlife _but_ that tasty solo was Gary Moore’s off of the demo, they couldn’t improve on it. On Live and dangerous Brian Robertson has evolved it a bit, but it’s basically Gary’s solo still.
Robertson basically ended Thin Lizzy in the states by getting injured in a bar fight so they had to cancel a tour when they had been about to kick it up a gear in the US after the boys are back in town, so Philip was angry with him. Bad Reputation was _supposed_ to be a trio, but they brought Brian back under caution and he delivered some of the greatest solos, but he didn’t make the album art. More lineup changes followed (Gary came back for a bit, among other things), but that’s another story
The cover work was by Irish artist Jim Fitzpatrick who is famous for the Che Quevara poster image in so many college dorms.
Eric Bell played guitar on this album. He was followed by some stellar guitar players afterwards like Gary Moore, Scott Gorham, and John Sykes. Brian Downey played the drums and Phil Lynott sang and played bass of course. Massively underrated band in the US.

Still in love with you has always been my all time favourite ballad ,the most raw / genuine/ gorgeous/ heartbreaking love song I've ever heard !! It still makes me cry like a baby to this day !! I can't listen to that song w/ o crying !! His emotion in this song is unreal ,too painful & beautiful !!! ,maybe the best ballad in the history of rock music ever !!! 💔💜🥁🐉🎤🎶🎄💞

Saw them in 73 near Norfolk when whiskey in the jar got to No 4 in the UK charts. Twin guitars and a very good.drummer. Phil, the coloured bassist died of drug overdoses. Because he was famous no hospital would admit.
