Couldn't agree more on everything you said! Lagers aren't all that hard, just gotta know the tricks! That beer looks so delicious, it's making me thirsty way too early in the day haha
Awesome video, and agree! I have a Vienna larger bubbling away at the moment. Quick pulley tip, swap the top and bottom pulleys, so that you pull down and not up, much more comfortable!
I found when I add biofine to the transfer line when I am pressure transfering a beer it does mix in way better than to add it to the fermenting keg. That way, it´s a lot more effective. Having a hoppy Helles almost done that I´ll be fining with biofine!
Great Video. Floor malted with decoction makes the best beer! I have the same pully from Kegland. If you swap it top to bottom around then you should be able to pull in a downwards direction. Cheers
Dude you are my absolute favorite brewtuber … I am originally from Cali (LA) so it may be that cool vibe you give off … I’m a diehard Dodger - Laker Fan … anyways I started this journey full grain and did a Lager for my first beer … it’s just cooking … no big deal … obviously I’m doing videos … different channel … ill do a shoutout to you on my next video … Cheers
Awesome vid!! Excited for you to try out biofine. One tip I found: it works much better when beer is cold first. When I add it before crashing down it never quite clears as quickly or as well.
So far it seems to be working out. I know apartment Steve uses it along with something else and it seems to work even better. Got a vegan friend so wanted to stop using gelatin for everything, cheers 🍻
I tried brewing first lager two months ago, it turns out great. I’m brewing my second batch now. It’s home brewers like you, and your friends who encourage me to try.
The beer is looking amazing, luckly I have a munich helles that I've just started the cold crash. I did quite a lot of lagers under pressure in the past but lately I switched back to the traditional process (ferment cold for a week) although I close the spunding valve once I raise the temp for the diacetyl rest. Cheers!
Yes spunding is a great way to speed up the process a bit as well. I still like to do things the traditional way as well, get great beers either way, cheers 🍻
I have more respect for brewers with the least cost equipment available. Buddies in our club have $5,000 systems and their beer sucks. I remember seeing when you just started out, BIAB with a homemade brew kettle. A ratcheting pulley is all you need. Ferment in a bucket. I'll agree with you that temperature control is most important. A $50 Craigslist chest freezer was a luxury. That stepped my beers up dramatically. Your DIY Keezer is also nice. 👍
One of my favorite recipes. Just finished mine but did not ferment under pressure. I did the typical fermentation schedule with a diacetyl rest. I lagered for a few weeks and I have to say it turned out like yours. Like you said lagers are not hard! Lutra is a very good yeast to speed it up. Great video.
I’ve had success with lagers at room temp without temp control or pressure fermentation vessels!! I just have my 3 gallon fermonster in a 5 gallon painters bucket submerged in cold water to make sure it doesn’t go through major temp swings. I would say, in my experience, the enemy isn’t high temperatures, it’s major temperature changes in a short period of time.
Agreed. Been brewing since 2000, and only got into lagers since circa 2017 thanks to pressure fermentation. (I’ve not had refrigeration as an option until l recently.) Now, that mostly what I make. In fact, my New Year’s resolution was to only make lagers this year. Good video BTW.
Brewed a lite lager using Lutra Kveik Monday night. Checked the fermenter this afternoon and it looks like the fermentation is done already. Going to give another day or two then take a gravity reading.
Funny how our beer styles synced up. Love a good lager! Absolutely not a tough style to make and glad that bigger brewtubers like yourself are squashing that misconception. Beautiful looking beer btw. Cheers!
Just opened the first bottles of the Vienna Lager and IPL I brewed a few weeks ago with Novalager at 22c (No pressure) and they're so good and I havent even lagered them properly yet. Looking forward to Lager season!
@@ronbarnes5354 I’m super excited! I actually decided I am going to do a pseudo Mexican lager with Lutra so I can turn it around in time for Cinco. Heating up 8 gallons of PBW took like 15 minutes so it’ll for sure shave a ton of time off brew day for me too! Cheers!
You know, with that sweet setup you have in your garage, you could pick up a single burner (induction or whatever) and just do your boil right next to your Clawhammer system! That way you wouldn't have to lug the pot around. Just an idea! I'm feeling inspired!
I made it to the end, but can't oblige having a beer as suggested. Taking oxycodone and tizanidine for some intense rib pain. Having trouble sleeping without the two Rx, but it is kicking in, and should be asleep soon.
I too don't find lagers difficult. Maybe not for a first time brewer, but once you have a few batches under your belt go for it. I've switched to Lutra in the summer. I like your pulley system. Can you flip it over 180* so you can pull down rather than trying to pull the strap up? Looks a bit awkward. Cheers
Nope, I let it go the whole time. I suppose if I pulled enough out I would probably need to turn off heat and stop recirculating but since it was only 6quarts out of the full volume it didn’t make too big of a difference.
I agree "lagers" arent that difficult, especially if you pressure ferment. However some will argue that its not a lager since you didnt do any lagering. Funny thing though no one knows its pressure fermented unles you tell them.. lol
@@ElementaryBrewingCo I dont think many can. I seen a guy recently surprise some BJCP judges with a saison that he pressure fermented at 20psi. The only comment they all had was it was missing some of the Belgium profile. They were all shocked when he told them what he did.
I do enjoy IPAs as well but I think I have a bit of an allergic reaction when I drink beers with lots of hops so I tend to not drink them as often…they are still delicious though!!!

Recognized the recipe? I might have been referencing your vid for this one 🤣🤣
Today we’re going to keep it simple by doing a decoction mash 😂 Cheers Brian! The beer sounds delicious!

Awesome video, and agree! I have a Vienna larger bubbling away at the moment.

🤣 noob mistake for sure, glad someone noticed, thanks and cheers 🍻
glad I'm not the only one who noticed!
Looks awesome!

Awesome video. Im getting into lagers now too. Cheers

I’m with you I love a good lager. I just kegged up one I have two more fermenting right now and one more in the pipeline once a fermenter frees up. 🍺
Nice!!!!

Thanks for watching!!!
Agreed! Just finished my Bohemian/ Czech Pilsner. I also decoted. Super happy with how mine turned out. Nice video! Cheers!
Cheers man!!!!

@@ElementaryBrewingCo yeah, forgot to say that I got great results fermenting warmer under pressure even without KVEIK!

I’ve got three different lagers in the keezer now. Including a Czech Pills! Lagers rule 🍻

need to hang my clawhammer box just like that
Awesome. Did my first lager a couple of months ago with Lutra as well, and turned out crushable. Amazing content!
Looks tasty Brian. Lagers are on the to do list for the summer. Perfect cali summertime beers. Cheers
Thanks!!! Cheers 🍻
I have been making lagers for years at room temperature -- the secret is the pressure fermentation...
Great Video! all well explained and easy to follow as always! cheers
Cheers Braj 🍻

Let’s make lager season last all year!!!! Those dark lagers are delicious as well in the winter, cheers 🍻
Lager must be Krystal clear! and Lager the beer at least for 60 days, 34' - 36' fahrenheit. Cheers 🍻.
I just throw in a small addition of melanoidin malt to avoid doing a decoction mash - I'm far too lazy to stir anything for 45 minutes! :D
Agreed! It took a while and I’m not a fan of long brew days but wanted to try it at least once. Cheers 🍻
AGREED (full disclaimer... i haven't watched this yet.. firing up stream, but I agree with the title)
Lagers 4 life🍻
Just got 240v put in and I’m having trouble picking a beer to brew on my new Clawhammer (analysis paralysis lol) so maybe I’ll do this one!
It’s a good one!!! Love the Clawhammer system!!!
Enjoy that new 240v it shaved off so much time compared to 110v. Cheers 🍻

These new yeasts and malts brew clean lagers in a week even without a fancy pressurized fermenter, it’s not 1990 anymore.
I really need to try out a lager! This gave me so much inspiration to brew one. Also great editing and pacing as usual 👌
Do it!!!
You know, with that sweet setup you have in your garage, you could pick up a single burner (induction or whatever) and just do your boil right next to your Clawhammer system! That way you wouldn't have to lug the pot around. Just an idea! I'm feeling inspired!

Totally agree. It's not that hard. Nova Lager and pressure fermentation was a game changer for myself.
I need to try the Nova lager yeast, haven’t used that one yet, cheers 🍻
Excellent! Cheers

Totally awkward because I was doing it wrong 🤣🤣 I need to flip it, cheers 🍻
Love brewing lagers. Great looking beer.
Was the pulley upside down?
It appears it was 🤣🤣🤣
Did you turn off the heat and recirculation of the mash in the Clawhammer while boiling the mash you pulled off? 🍻
Nope, I let it go the whole time. I suppose if I pulled enough out I would probably need to turn off heat and stop recirculating but since it was only 6quarts out of the full volume it didn’t make too big of a difference.

I’ve had a few comments on the pulley already 🤣 I think I need to flip it 🤣🤣 cheers 🍻
I think I've become an IPA snob. 10 years brewing and I've never done a lager. It's crazy, I know
