Possibly the greatest song ever written about the complex relationship between humans, their emotions, the passage of time, and how humans deal with it all.
My favorite Tom Petty song, it elicits such emotion in my brain and heart. My favorite guitar sound, and I love Tom's lower timbre of voice during this period. Men's low voice tend to become higher with age because the vocal cords are muscles that stretch over time. Whatever, Tom is missed for sure. I tend to prefer live versions of songs. Have recently been listening to this on a CD in my car and the harmonization of the chorus is wonderful.
So beautiful. Probably his most beautiful song. Every version I’ve seen and heard, and there’s lots on UA-cam, is just a little different than the previous one and a little unique in it’s own small way, but the message is there. Tom’s songs mean something different to everyone, that’s what’s remarkable about his music. It gives you what you want and need regardless of your personal perspective or situation. It’s like every song he wrote feels like it’s for you personally and about you personally. There aren’t too many like him, and as a matter of fact, in my humble almost 50 year old opinion, there are none like him. His music taught me how to understand me. It moved me, lifting my spirits. It gives me strength when I feel like I have nothing left. I’m forever in his debt and I will miss him forever. My greatest regret is that I didn’t see as many shows as I’d have liked, especially the last one at the Hollywood Bowl on September 25th, coincidentally, what would have been my son’s 18th birthday had we not lost him when he was 11. Tom and the Heartbreakers had my back then and always. I’m actually ashamed a little bit to say that I took him for granted because he was ALWAYS THERE. He never wrote a bad song. 3 minutes, 4 cords & the Truth. Or, as Mike Campbell said, “the Heartbreakers motto was always ‘don’t bore us, get to the chorus...”. I dig that. You don’t need to craft some bloated self-stroking morass of over-produced tripe to get the point across or touch someone’s heart. Tom, Mike, Ben, Howie, Ron, Stanley, Steve and Scott understood that better than 99.999999% of what passes for musicians these days. I’m so grateful and I feel so blessed to have been privileged enough to hear it all. “Damn the Torpedoes” was the very first album that I bought with my own money and I listened to it religiously and I’ve never gotten sick of it in 40 years. Tom isn’t gone as long as his and the Heartbreakers music exists and is played. He’s the very best kind of immortal. I’m jealous of the band playing in Heaven, and while I’m not in any particular hurry to die, you can bet your ass I’m looking forward to seeing that band playing in the clouds. God Bless you Tom. Thanks beyond words for the gifts you gave freely with both hands for 4 decades. I owe you big time. You literally saved my life. And more than once. A large part of what I know now and have learned over the years about courage, I learned from you. Thanks, man. For everything. See you on the other side.
Totally agree with everything you said. I have never missed a musician after their passing as much as Tom. His songs have also helped me in certain times of my life. This song, Walls, I went through a traumatic attack recently, and I have become isolated, I don't want to go out, see people, just hide away. Somebody said to me that I need to get out of my comfort zone. I said why should I come out of my comfort zone, as it's where I'm comfortable? Then I listen to this song and the lyric "All around your island there's a barricade, that keeps out the danger, but holds in the pain." And it made sense. Forget psychologists, just listen to Tom Petty's albums.
What year is this. I tried Goggling WDR Rockpalast German TV broadcast Walls Acoustic and keep getting referencing to 1977 which obviously this is not. This looks like TP 1990's. I wish people would include date with title.
This song touches my heart. He wrote the most beautiful songs. Sometimes I feel like he wrote them just for me. And then I remember I have to share them, that he wrote them for all of us. 💞💖💕
Such a simple song, yet filled with so much emotion. When I hear the lyrics "it keeps out the danger, & holds in the pain". I don't think any lyrics are so universal & applies to all humanity as those. I especially think of People struggling with addiction (of any kind) & trauma (I relate). My favorite TP song
Such a beautiful story do Tom's brilliant lyrics tell! ♡ What a multi talented amazing musician, and wonderful man was Yom Petty! ! @@TheBella2u are you talking about the acoustic version with Mike on mandolin and Ben with a solo in the middle. Priceless.
Great version. Sounds like he wrote it to encourage his daughter and all of his fans.

We lost Tom five years ago. I'm still grieving. RIP, Mr. Petty.

Love this man ♡ Could just be sweat, but looks like a tear on his cheek
Beautiful rendition of a perfect song. I miss Tom Petty's presence in this world so much. I used to sing this(poorly) to my kids at bedtime.
