One of the American composers who most influenced me when I was young, especially his 8th Symphony. I interviewed him by phone in 1986, and met him soon afterward. He looks older here than when I met him.
Schuman's earier works like the 3rd and 6th Symphonies are among the finest symphonic works ever written by an American in my opinion. The later symphonies are not nearly as good. The rhythmic vitality of the early works disappears and the later works emphasize his great skill as an orchestra especially for brass. I wonder what happened.
his 6th is the only one I'm very familiar with and it is absolutely an awesome, awesome piece. took about 5 listens to "get it" but ever since every time I hear it it just sounds better & better to the point that the final climax just shatters me emotionally & brings me to tears. I wish more people knew about it

I'm thankful for these 18 minutes. His optimism is indeed something I want to feed off of.
Such a marvelous composer ! Thanks for the fine interview, what a great artist.
Who is the interviewer on the "Overtones" videos, please?

should read "great skill as an orchestrator."
@@theodoremeckstroth6706 I can agree on that and energy underneath. Sounds very American with vital energy!
