Rebecka Ahvenniemi: Requiem for Mimì and Other Women Who Died in Opera

Rebecka Ahvenniemi's work "Requiem for Mimì and Other Women Who Died in Opera" is dedicated to the female characters who have been "killed" in opera performances, focusing on Mimì, the protagonist of La Bohème (1896).
Opera is often thought to say something universal about being human, yet the majority of the opera literature is mostly composed by white men from the West. Thus, the women themselves have not had the opportunity to define the female characters. This requiem tries to raise questions about social roles and defining power.
