Great video, healthy take. In BSS (Battle Spirits Saga) it's called "Flash timing" where both players pass the 'time to respond to an action' back and forth until both agree to pass and move onto the next step. Gundam TCG 'seems' to share a similar window of 'responding' in that given time frame. So it's exciting to have that layer of "here's my response to that situation" gimmick. Def one of the many interactions that got me hooked in BSS.
Gundam 00 mobile suits activating trans-am for a big stat buff for one turn and getting a big stat debuff after, pilots who piloted multiple suits also giving haste/storm to those instead of just one pair, turn A/Turn X being a double sided board wipe, there's a lot of design space potential to explore
Oh boy, i really don't want to be in Bandai's and Bushiroad's shoes, when the current TCG bubble bursts. The amount of card games those companies are launching, every since the TCG renaissance of 2020, is insane.
The only way they can survive is if they go digital like Master Duel did and actually make sure the presentation for the cards is high quality like Pokemon TCG Pocket's. Physical can be nice as a collector's item and the whole card shop experience. But the majority of people will prefer digital for its ease of access to cards, matches, etc.
Bandai makes its money immediately so they will be fine. They make the product and sell it to distributors, and like another comment stated they are a large company with many different markets they play in.
@@velar25 The real people in problem are the game stores that have to make orders waay in advance of release without knowing if the game is gonna take of or if they are going to sit on cases of unsellable stock IE the stores that supported BSS
Not really related to TCG renaissance or 2020. There were always alot of card games in Japan. They are now only translating them into English or doing global launch more often
Starting with Double 0 as well and really agree your take on 2v2 TCG environment would be such a unique thing if Bandai really wants this TCGto stand out then the other TCGs. We know that recently TCGs are everywhere and the popular ones are still in the picture while a lot of new ones keep entering the scene here and there. All in all, I feel that Gundam will be for niche audience only and not really for all unless the overall gameplay is somehow really fun and have something new to offer due to TCG players are struggling enough to build their decks for the new sets and for multiple TCGs to keep into account, it will be hard to get into.
As long as you're willing to mix factions, single series decks seems very doable. Like for Unicorn, we saw Banagher is in Blue & Sinanju is in Red. And for 0079, all the White Base stuff is Blue and the Zeon stuff is in Green. The 2 factions in 0079 seem to synergize well too, with the Zakus swarming with tokens, while the RX-78-2 buffs your entire board.
Something to note is color looks to be determined by the 'faction' of the card. Earth Federation cards (rx-78-2) will be blue and 'operation meter' cards (wing gundam and heero) will be green. Zeon (char) will be green. So 1 series will have multiple colors because of it having multiple factions. Also, something I find to be the most interesting/unique thing about the game is the fact cards have a Level and it determines when you can play the card. For example, a Level 5 card can only be played when you have 5 resources. So it's going to be 5 turns before you can play the really fun cards, unless of course you use cards that give you extra resources to speed up the leveling. There was a green card that does that, but it gave you a token resource that disappears when you use it, so you get a level up, but at the cost of losing the level if you're not careful. Can totally see cards like the Neo Zeong, psycho gundam, and destroy gundam being Level 10 with how huge they are.
I made a 2v2 format for digimon tcg in the exact same way they are doing their 2v2. I'm glad they decided on it because its incredibly fun doing 2v2 and more card games need more than just 1v1 play
Honestly, Bandai is a fucking mess when it comes to card games. I will say that they're mostly fun and all of them find their niche/identity after a few sets but they're straight up hurting themselves at the same time. As someone who's been playing Dragon Ball Super Masters since they released the first anniversary box, I gotta say that they have a talented staff that really knows how to make tcg's that really embrace their respective franchises in a way where the mechanics truly respect their IP's in a very fun way. That being said, they constantly generate their own competition because of it. Digimon tcg was cool and unique, but then you have players who drop off it to play one piece, who then tried to pick up DBS Fusion World and may or may not keep it, but then also let's try union arena because it represents a majority of our favorite animes with a cool new system, but now there's Gundam coming out which seems to combine all the best ideas from everything else into a cool new tcg about the most famous mech franchise to date, and we'll give an honorable mention to battle spirits because it's a super fun game but lacks any real promotional value outside of bandai events and is the least popular by far. It's incredibly difficult to keep up with one tcg already yet you got these people announcing a new one every year it seems. The player base continues to shift and change for each game with every new release that I don't see how it can possibly be sustainable.
Having played the Original Japanese version of Gundam War, it seems like this game is a mix of that and the use of their newer Bandai card game mechanics. I'm super excited and will probably play/make content on this just as much as Digimon.
I believe that the success of Witch of Mercury brought a lot of new fans to the franchise. This makes me hopeful that it could reach a more mainstream audience as well with Mercury being part of the first set.
I kinda feel this time it feels more, well, "full fledged" in terms of the basic presentation. Hopefully we can at least see this tcg lasted long enough for a wider audience to enjoy so that it could get enough attention to last longer
I heard if you link pilot cards with the correct unit card you can bypass summoning sickness and attack. One way they could combat pilot/command card spam is having pure pilot cards have this rule but I’ll guess we’ll see.
I can see that what’s showed so far is more of the experimenting phase of GCG, I can see R&D experiment with mechanics that can work in the game and have the feel of separate series in the franchise, like Build Fighters with customization and splash-able synergies with other factions, Seed with swapable modes, 00 using the trans-am system with huge one turn buffs that can only be used once per game, or IBO with extreme Aggro gameplay! The possibilities are endless, but my personal concern is the printing numbers and the infamous scalper issue with the Gunpla, which might have happened with P-Bandai’s Beta product sales.
Having played Sunrise Crusade and Gundam War I'm glad to see certain mechanics retaining but I am still somewhat skeptical about the game itself seeing how its a lot more simplified version of the OG Gundam War/Sunrise Crusade. There was a tweet that sorta brought back faith seeing how even certain people are skeptical in Japan twitter but they're going to give it a try and support the game with maximum effort. Hopefully it picks up in Malaysia.
In general I like how the base, pilot and suit mechanics feel. I can see this game pulling in gundam fans who wouldnt play tcgs otherwise, vs streching the bandai tcg playerpool thinner across another game.
It certainly isnt one piece. BUT. its the same card company. i really feel like bandai card games feel very similar and i just wish there was more variety between the games.
As a player of the OG gundam TCG, I really hoped that they'd bring back the original life system: You deck is your remaining life; When you take damage, you set aside certaing number of cards from your deck; You lose when there is no card left in your deck. I think this is quite unique even in today's standard
@@removed3566honestly looking at it from a game balance prospective, I don't really like it. It punishes you for taking damage and being at a disadvantage. A game Life mechanic should either reward the winner (example Pokemon prize cards, lowering opponent Life points etc) or punish the loser (blowing up a shield, taking Life in Vanguard). This one does both, not only you get closer to winning by doing the damage, you punish the opponent by potentially removing Key Pieces from their deck even before they can play them. Vanguard does the same, but is limited to 5/6 cards from top deck, I don't know how big decks were, but I can see removing 10/20 cards easily. I still remember the debates between yugioh players about pot of desires, a card that draws you 2 cards at the cost of banishing 10 cards face down from the top of your deck. Drawing 2 in yugioh is an incredibly strong effect, and even then It made a lot of people unsure, because of this reason. This is that, but as a game mechanic.
Agreed. I play One Piece & I realized it was such a missed opportunity to not include Devil Fruit typing as a mechanic. Then there’s the fact that any character can be any color, which makes it all feel pointless in terms of flavor. Just my opinion of course.
Still remember getting a code to use the Try burning gundam in the game Cross Wars but CS noted the code was only for japan based region only. With how Gundam Evolution was handled (an online hero shooter game) this game would probably reach the graveyard soon. The artwork is good so will probably buy a pack and hope to get a card I can use as part of a gunpla diorama.
yeah it def feels way too safe like it didnt even try to have something like digimon's memory system. even the game board they shown in the live stream felt like one they use in some generic card game. shields are also something thats a bit frustrating to me personally cause i hate it when stuff i need gets placed into shields, like sure deck building issue but i like it more when they try new things instead of playing it safe.
My main issue with bandai games are a little too straightforward. There is no deckout or exodia or spell only deck etc. what duel masters did right they had a card named bird shot destroy all creatures with DP 2000 or less so you played a deck with 3000DP or more. They also had a 7 mana 7000DP attack a creature immediately, end of the turn return this creature to the hand. So it was a reoccurring sniper and there was a card that could permanently give it a 2 mana discount. The goal of the deck was get your sniper around 3 mana snipe them every turn win by value. They also did a plague themed deck they released creatures that cannot use their effect they give their effect to your other creatures. The goal was to get about 4 of them on the board and gave each other effects.
Ik I started getting into gundam right around IBO, which I watched as much as I could then until I joined the army in the summer of 16. But that was just the start i started playing their gundam breaker games and watching all the different animes they had and tbh i am definitely gonna be putting more money than i should for the gundam card game just so I can collect all the suits i prefer. I hope the game is very successful in the US so i can get a ton of goodies 😂😂
Love how it immediately sold out from the looks of it. I was actually planning on maybe getting the beta set, but just like almost everything in P Bandia, it banished as soon as it went live lol
I am going to be setting up talks with my local card shop. I already preorder other card games from them so I think I may try to get a few cases to crack and get my local community to try the game out. I hope it is fun I like Gundam and would love to see it be something different to play. Right now I am drifting out of Digimon because of bad card design but I am hopeful that maybe a new tcg can bring back that joy.
I think the biggest factor is the fact that it's a simultaneous release with the West. Opening this game up to the West is gonna be the thing that gives it its biggest chance for survival. Just imagine if this game becomes more popular in the US than in Japan.
I was just planning to start getting into the One Piece TCG, and then immediately I see this announced. I'm a big Gundam fan, but I feel the scene won't be as strong, and I don't know if I trust a Gundam IP to remain healthy long term given how we've been burned in the past.
My answer to the question in the title: Not sure, but I hope so, I love Gundam, and was bummed out when i heard the last gundam TCG EoS'd in 2018 when I was still in school.
FWIW, Digimon is also on its like 3rd iteration I believe? It definitely took them a minute to get something that sticks and they definitely believe they found the formula with it (and obviously One Piece.) I agree that it won’t surpass OPCG, but with the Gundam fan base and similar enough mechanics to their other games that obviously work well enough, I think it might contend with Digimon for their 2nd most popular spot.
Small correction about GCW, it never got English cards, only Japanese ones. Though there were somewhat unreliable translations on the app and website. Made the world championship a bit tricky since we all just had to memorise the cards. One of the many reasons the game was axed so quickly.
Looks awesome. I am not going to quit Cardfight but will pick up the new Gundam cards as well. Hopefully Bandai stays with it. You are right they are quick to abandon stuff.
i think they want to keep the mechanics simple to make the game accessible from a collecting, and playing perspective. I used to love yugioh growing up, then the cards became their own paragraphs in tiny font...sitting there wanting to have fun, instead it turned into collective reading lol. this is the best next option to Gunpla, and the Warhammer style table top game people were trying to popularize but never went far.
I’m just wondering if like how when the new digimon tcg came out and it cut ties with battle spirits collabs will the same now happen to gundam and battle spirits?
I really hope they have some switch out mechanics with the Strike or the Impulse, since those Gundam specifically have a gimmick where it changes specialties
It feels like the Gundam Arsenal Base might have been a test bed for this TCG. The new cards disappear faster than Bandai could keep up and people collect them like mad.
I think with WfM we got a lot of new gundam fans, that doesn't know about the old gundam TCG history. They probably give it a good try. Worst case scenario, I do think Gundam cardgame has some REALLY good looking card for collection. Much like some people who buy Weiss for the sake of collecting waifu cards. I do like that they invest on the idea of 2v2 or 4 players FFA. And I pray they do success, or at least good enough where Bandai don't drop it.
Gameplay and Mechanic will probably be a mixed of what the other TCGs under bandai are doing which may be interesting. My biggest worry is that their production won't be able to keep up with all the games they're pushing, Gundam is the 7th modern day TCG from them now; BSS, Digimon, One Piece, DBSW, DBSFW, Union Arena, and now Gundam. If they are planning to match JP and Global timing for gundam that'd be great but that means they'll need to print a lot to keep up for all around the world. Also Digimon Global is expected to be on release parity with Japan in the first half of 2025, which means they too will also need to have a lot of product push to meet the world wide demand. And I would expect they'll want the same for One Piece sooner or later, that means they'll be printing so many cards both in Japanese and English for at least 2 games, possibly 3 in the future, that I'll question if there isn't a stock inventory issue and that distributors and stores don't get enough product as a whole, as well as the overall quality possibly declining due to needing to meet demand.
I'm a Gundam fan, and will definitely pick this up. But, gotta be honest, high percentage of the gameplay is similar to other Bandai tcgs, the Link and Lv is somehow unique but with the a slight touch of digimon inherent and Lv. Overall Bandai TCG, from attacking, to blocking, to resource, they are using just the same system, which originated to Duel Master.
As someone who had supported Gundam Cross wars from its inception until its closure, I am very apprehensive on the new card game. I will look with bated breath into only buying singles instead of outright booster boxes like on cross wars out of the fear of it dying again and I don't really like the gameplay as compared to the easier to track hearthstone like gameplay (at the cost of health being recovered to full which can be imbalanced for some strats without any dice tracking) of cross wars.
im really excited for it. I quit vanguard in 2020 with the reboot, and and ive bought into a lot of games trying to capture that lightning in the bottle. I've mostly given up on that, but I've enjoyed cycling through bandai card games, and Mecha are cool and underrepresented in cards! My biggest issue with the game is that there are just too many games. TCGs hae a quick release schedule, and a LOT of churn points (basically every set), so if you have too many games, its possible to get fatigued by games in general and drop out.
Mixed feelings about it, mainly because of how Bandai handles product distribution and is competing with itself in the TCG market with Digimon, One Piece and Union Arena.
I agreed with most things you said about multiple failed versions of the card games. However, I think Digimon shows that no matter how many times they try it. The current state of bandai TCGs will let it thrive.
I just don't feel like it'll be anything special. There already feels like too many TCGs out there and most of them fail after a few years. I'm sure there will be collectors for this one, but I don't see it having a successful competitive scene (not here in North America, could be very different in Japan though) at least not at the scale they probably would want.
I love gundam :D I played tons of hour of Versus serie on PSP, arcade and now on PS4. Got tons of gunpla! and now anime since 89 been watching (in chinese (cantonese)) it and now we get a new TCG?? as I live in Sweden it will quite hard to get these cards.. but will my best like I did with one piece to get all ST packs :D
So far I think I like altered TCG gameplay the best, but it still isn't my ideal game. The bases sound like defender cards, I like the comeback mechanic from the life cards, and I am not sure which health system would be the best. I much prefer the star wars unlimited or altered resource system though, drawing multiple cards and putting X amount into your mana zone
Very promising just with the fact they straight introduce 2v2 and battle royal "EDH esque" format right of the bat. I prob never seen TCG (not LCG) did that before. Also bandai did good recently with TCG, unlike what they used to. They handled one piece pretty good, digimon while not as good also not in bad spot.
Its going to b3 a ahit show if one piece is anything to go by these cards will be impossible to get because every store will get 3 to 4 boxes and then sell it for a 50 percent markup
As someone who played card game, I think the problem that doesn't hook me into GTCG at the moment is that their card art just.. doesn't hit. It's not bad, but it just doesn't seem to fit into a TCG style. The art at the moment just give me the feel of 'random poster slapped on a card' feel, which doesn't give the feeling of 'it's a legendary unit that can deal damage to you mentally'
The distribution will be bad, and knowing Bamco, this won't last long. Also Gundam fans usually like the model kits more than the TCG, like, they have no time to build the kit and rather adding the backlog, so no time for tcg either.
I think they should handle their balancing issues with one piece and their black cards vs making more games - but whatever The game works a lot like one piece imo, but with bases and shield instead of life cards. And damage seems to stay with counters (dice)
usually shields that are cards randomly from the deck paired with "break effects" cause some of the worst RNG in games, I am a huge gundam fan and im pretty sad about this development. Shields would be fine if they were blank cards, or cards you could choose to be there. Similar to pokemon if you "prize" your win con you can just loose on the spot before the game starts and nothing in card games is a worse feeling. Ive personally lost alot of money over the past 20 years from such mechanics...
Damn I hope it does. They have to prove to us that the game will last and wont be added to there graveyard like the others. I hate buying cards then having them be pointless. I love collecting but I really don't care if thats all im doing. Im trying to play
As much I will like to play this card game but for me I rather play the video game of gundam more then playing the card game even bandi has so many opportunity to make gundam board game with the model build because people invested alot of money to build and custom their gundam by hand to show off their gundam but people want to use them like a Warhammer style so it can feel like it's more then a display. Sure the card game is great but for a long run it all depends on how many people are willing to invest their money in this game and how big of a crowd they will get from it.
As cool as it is to see gundam card game coming out with the success of the recent games I feel they have to many card games rn and Bandai needs to calm down
The only Bandai game I like is Digimon. I almost got into a Bushiroad tcg years ago but lost interest. But I am excited for Hoyoverse Genshin Impact Genius Invokation tcg releasing in the west soon.😊

The thing that perplex me is that if Gundam is getting a tcg it gets less likely that we get a Gundam set in Bss

yeah it def feels way too safe like it didnt even try to have something like digimon's memory system. even the game board they shown in the live stream felt like one they use in some generic card game.
shields are also something thats a bit frustrating to me personally cause i hate it when stuff i need gets placed into shields, like sure deck building issue but i like it more when they try new things instead of playing it safe.
It probably won't, but that's going to make these cards priceless in the end...
Needs a digital version. I'm not going in a nasty comic shop
I’ve been looking for a new tcg to invest in. I think I’ll give this a go.
Gundam is already in Battle Spirits tho 😅, plays well
I think the biggest factor is the fact that it's a simultaneous release with the West. Opening this game up to the West is gonna be the thing that gives it its biggest chance for survival. Just imagine if this game becomes more popular in the US than in Japan.
Nope. Gundam is not that popular in "the west".
@@RandomPerson-tz7wkgundam has massively increased in popularity in the west. Model kits constantly sell sellout
Yeah I’m definitely celebrating if it’s like Digimon and this is the attempt where they finally nail it!
Small correction about GCW, it never got English cards, only Japanese ones. Though there were somewhat unreliable translations on the app and website. Made the world championship a bit tricky since we all just had to memorise the cards. One of the many reasons the game was axed so quickly.
Sorry yeah I should've clarified, I was mostly referring to the website - I do kinda remember it being a rough machine translation LOL
It would be nice if they made the preorder set more available
Looks awesome. I am not going to quit Cardfight but will pick up the new Gundam cards as well. Hopefully Bandai stays with it. You are right they are quick to abandon stuff.
I still have cards from the old Card game. They were pretty cool
i think they want to keep the mechanics simple to make the game accessible from a collecting, and playing perspective.
"People in their 40s are more the Dragon Ball generation than the One Piece generation..."
Excuse me while I crumble to dust.
Whether it succeeds or not, i'm buying.
Im happy because one thing, official Gundam Card Sleeves :D
It feels like the Gundam Arsenal Base might have been a test bed for this TCG. The new cards disappear faster than Bandai could keep up and people collect them like mad.
As an avid Gunpla enthusiast, I'm forced to collect these lol. Maybe not to be competitive but to collect
Have you heard of/looked at the Ultraman Card Game?
looks like one of my old gundam tcg games
Digimon also had alot of failed card games till this latest one now, and it's doing pretty well now
Isnt the game having a simultaneous release?
Really I just hope it going to success because a lot of the Gundam stuff just flops so hard a great example is that f2p Overwatch clone that flop hard
Asa kid i was big into gindam wing. I really wanted the ms war card game but never got any
Im pretty excited about this
I feel like there is a cardfight vanguard vibe on the gameplay.
Can you do a video about the upcoming english released stardust blade special series deckset
Will all card games start off simple with base rules and then add over time
Will I be able to use my gundam models I’ve built… no? I’ll find something else
DBS e Digimon players seeing new brothers to eat the cake haha
Winter is coming
The Newtypes hiding among us will dominate!
Kira yamato not "retiring" when his unit is destroyed MUST BE a Mechanic! It would not be canon otherwise 😂
The beta set sold out on P-Bandai within an hour of the video releasing. I think they're gonna be fine tbh
Honestly you could mix some Digimon in the gundam game and noone would notice. My rider is shoutmon x8
im really excited for it.
Might give it a try, especially if tournament prizing is good enough, maybe it'll push Konami to up their game.
After watching the gameplay rules video, does it feel like duel masters to anyone else?
Mixed feelings about it, mainly because of how Bandai handles product distribution and is competing with itself in the TCG market with Digimon, One Piece and Union Arena.
Battle spirits and Battle Spirits Saga
I agreed with most things you said about multiple failed versions of the card games. However, I think Digimon shows that no matter how many times they try it. The current state of bandai TCGs will let it thrive.
I sure hope it succeeds, I love gundam. But we barely have card shops that will host it, if at all I'm afraid
Was really looking forward to this after the reveal I can confirm..... i will play this but it is Dead on arrival
Flash timing (bashin dan voice)
Very promising just with the fact they straight introduce 2v2 and battle royal "EDH esque" format right of the bat.
I prob never seen TCG (not LCG) did that before. Also bandai did good recently with TCG, unlike what they used to. They handled one piece pretty good, digimon while not as good also not in bad spot.
They got me with MS War all the way back when. They ain't getting me again lmao
Won’t matter when/if I can’t find cards….
I just don’t think it will last. It sucks but it is what it is. It just doesn’t have the staying power like other anime’s and their card games
The distribution will be bad, and knowing Bamco, this won't last long. Also Gundam fans usually like the model kits more than the TCG, like, they have no time to build the kit and rather adding the backlog, so no time for tcg either.
I think they should handle their balancing issues with one piece and their black cards vs making more games - but whatever
The game works a lot like one piece imo, but with bases and shield instead of life cards. And damage seems to stay with counters (dice)
As long as it's complex/competitive enough and have a nice amount of "waifu" cards.
I was sad to miss the beta box on pbandai
usually shields that are cards randomly from the deck paired with "break effects" cause some of the worst RNG in games, I am a huge gundam fan and im pretty sad about this development. Shields would be fine if they were blank cards, or cards you could choose to be there.
Similar to pokemon if you "prize" your win con you can just loose on the spot before the game starts and nothing in card games is a worse feeling. Ive personally lost alot of money over the past 20 years from such mechanics...
50 card deck is hyoe because thats how many sleees come in a standard sleeve pack
Sure the card game is great but for a long run it all depends on how many people are willing to invest their money in this game and how big of a crowd they will get from it.
in japan? Yes
any other country? No
As cool as it is to see gundam card game coming out with the success of the recent games I feel they have to many card games rn and Bandai needs to calm down
Me about to build Azorius Unicorn Aerial frame 1
they should’ve kept Batspi as their main TCG for their IPs 😭
As long as I get the talgeese, that's all I care about😅
The only Bandai game I like is Digimon. I almost got into a Bushiroad tcg years ago but lost interest. But I am excited for Hoyoverse Genshin Impact Genius Invokation tcg releasing in the west soon.😊
