Been watching your video's for the last 2 weeks, enjoyed them very much and you've got me back into aircraft kit building, am learning from you. It's nice to watch you construct and also nice to see you enjoying the build and making the odd, realised mistake. this BF109 build was very enjoyable. Thank you.
Nice build Matt ! Just a suggestion when doing mottling try to use little bits of irregular shaped sponge with most of paint wiped off. It can give quite a good variation of shape and tone to the mottling. Good especially if you don’t have an airbrush for fine detail. Strange undercarriage looks like it’s holding to go for the toilet for relief. Needs spread out a little towards wing tips.
Thanks for the tip - i'll see about using that on the next one! The undercarriage seems to have been designed that way - a bit of bad moulding on airfix's part there
Great build Matt! If you want to create a mottled effect without an airbrush you can cut down an old paintbrush and stipple on the color using a stabbing motion against the fuselage. Another method would be to use a piece of soft foam like packing material or a disposable type paintbrush and lightly press it against the fuselage. I hope this helps.
@@ModelMinutes I love airfix, but really the only way for me to get it is online. It's just easier to get things in person. And my local hobby shop has LOTS of Academy and Revell, along with Tamiya now, along with the occasional profiPACK from eduard.
Amazing build of one of the best fighter planes in WWII (for me the best is the FW190) I really like the Swiss decals and also that camouflage pattern! I would like to learn about mottling techniques without an airbrush and using acrylic paints. Thanks for the video!
@@ModelMinutes yes sir, i still need to do the underside, and apply decals then done:) although sadly its the last brush painted kit as im gonna try to do the transition to airbrus as ive got one yay
Nice job with the mottling. The landing gear looks off in this kit. I've recently built a G6 from Revell and the landing gear was way more at an angle towards the wing tips, like it was in reality. Other than that it's a neat looking model.
Thanks for watching! I'm not sure the mottling is "right" yet - I will need to work on that. The landing gear is a little odd, I think it's because it comes in so few pieces . . .
If you don't have a airbrush you can still do mottling with dry pastel and cotton applicator, then put a clear coat over the top with rattle can to seal it.
I enjoyed your work here however as you know I am a rookie even though I did a fair amount as a child some 45 years ago! What you guys do today bears very little correlation to back then. On that very point your aerial wire creating was jaw dripping to me!.! So easy to excite us rookies! What a great technique. So £10 is too much then? The enamel varnish was applied before the acrylic wash. If i did not do this, when the acrylic wash is removed (with acrylic thinners) all the previous acrylic layers would also be removed - stripping the model back to bare plastic. The enamel varnish layer protects these paints from being stripped
@@ModelMinutes i know, but it would have been better to put a satin/gloss enamel coat? isnt it too hard to remove the wash from the rought surface of the matt cote?

This was a really good kit, but the propeller gimmick that let's you spin it, couldn't work since the studs stick wasn't long enough for it to fit but I was planning to put a tiny motor for the propeller to spin so I guess that isn't a problem
wow you manage to paint that german scheme¡¡or Swiss XD and looks fantastic ¡¡ are the Humbrol (german RLM) colors good? sometimes i find that area bit darker
You should try to get tamiya or revell acrylics. They are a lot smoother than the humbrols paints and it looks a lot better. They are more pricy though. I think you should still use your current paints while you have them if you do run out and decide to change in the future.
Whilst it is correct that humbrol acrylic is water based, the alcohol (and other compounds) in the thinner actually act as a solvent and cause the paint to thin much better than just using water. I have never experienced clumping or chipping of the paint as a result of this combination.
