  • The fourth video in my series of great places for flat water kayaking in West Virginia. In this video we look at Sutton Lake and all of the amazing things it has to offer including a marina (with boat rentals from party pontoons to kayaks), fishing, hiking trails, camping, beach, and campgrounds... there truly is something for everyone.

Thanks for the video on Sutton Lake. Per your recommendation, we kayaked from the dam boat ramp on Saturday 8/26. We went down Wolf Creek and back, a total of 7 miles. On Sunday we kayaked about 11 miles on Stonecoal Lake and encountered three people. This gorgeous, natural lake is great for solitude and wildlife viewing. The ramp off Georgetown Road is convenient, but the ramp at the other end (off Brushy Fork) allows access to a remote area with more wildlife. On Monday we kayaked 9.6 miles on Tygart Lake from the Pleasant Creek ramp. The rocky shore line with boulders on and in the water was spectacular. We were able to approach a small waterfall flowing over a boulder at one point. Once again, we had the lake almost completely to ourselves. Burnsville Lake on Tuesday (9.4 miles) was our final stop of this trip. We explored several coves, Knawl Creek was our favorite with several heron sightings. We are a 74-year-old couple in Virginia with a Hobie Oasis Mirage (pedal drive) tandem kakak.

Wow, what an amazing few days of kayaking! Very impressive. We're very fortunate to have these places to explore on the water. My wife and I are planning on kayaking Burnsville lake in the next week or so. I'm definitely going to make Knawl Creek one of my stops. Thanks for this awesome comment my friend. Maybe I'll see you on the water some time. Take care!

Thank you G5 Photography! I'm really glad you liked it. I'm going to post one tomorrow of Hawks Nest Lake... it was the first time I had kayaked there and it's really cool.

Thanks Gary! I'm putting it on my list now. Do you know of any lakes in WV that you can just cruise into a cove and setup camp for a night?

Looks great thank for posting. So far my favorite lake to kayak is Bear Lake, near the Western Carolina University by Sylvia NC. Few lakes in a row but Bear is too small for boats n a full day of kayaking.

I would like to check Bear Lake out sometime when I'm in NC.
      Thanks for watching my video!

Loving these videos! It would be great if you could include info about whether it’s a good option for beginner paddlers. I’m taking my 6 year old son out so i always have to keep his skill snd experience level in mind.
Suggested places for videos: coal river in St. Albans, bluestone.

Hi Marissa, thanks for the awesome feedback and great suggestions! Not sure if you're close to Hawks Nest Lake but in my opinion it's an excellent place for novice kayakers. It's relatively quiet, the water is calm, it's pretty, and even though there are motor boats on the water, I haven't seen anyone creating a lot of wake. There's a cove near the gondolas and the train bridge is kinda neat too.
Here's a link to a video I did there last year.

If boating is allowed , you might want to try Moncove Lake in Monroe County at Gap Mills , WV
