I loved Nettle and Bone SO MUCH that I'm actually designing a knitted sock pattern on it. It blew me away and fired up all my book-inspired knitwear designing furnaces. Incredible.
Kingfisher is just doing so well in all different genres. one of my favourite authors ever. Legends & Lattes is one of my favourites of the year. It gives exactly what it says it will!
I'm so glad that you loved Nettle and Bone! T. Kingfisher is one of my favorite authors. I can't wait to see what you think of the Paladin's series. I blew through them so fast. So many dark moments but at the same time I was laughing so hard. I love that her characters are mostly older. It makes it more funny.
T. Kingfisher is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors, I need to get to Nettle and Bone! I love the lightness and humor she somehow manages to weave into very dark stories in her horror works (just finished What Moves the Dead and LOVED IT) which I've never encountered to such a successful extent in another author. Glad you enjoyed your first outing with Kingfisher!
Glad your poll went with Nettle and Bone. The Hollow Places is not what I'd call a relaxing read. She has some fantasy romances that are lighter than N&B.
Nettle and Bone is a great sample of T. Kingfisher's work and I can't recommend the rest of her works enough, especially the Paladins series - same cozy feels laced with some hard-hitting horrory moments.
Love your kitty kat! Great video! I am impressed with how fast you read! I can only read one book a day on most occasions unless I wake up at midnight and read all night as I am wont to do as I don't sleep well. But don't know if I will be doing that much more as I recently started a new medicine (not for sleeping) and it makes me sleepy when the dose increased after five days
Nettle and Bone is definitely on my to read list! So glad to know it's gonna be good (most likely). I'm really looking forward to your views on Daisy Darker when you read it.
I know you didn’t get to it in this video, but I can’t wait to hear what you think about Legends and Lattes! I’m reading it right now and it’s just so compulsively readable and cozy that I can already tell it’s gonna be a favorite (but I can’t even buy my own copy because it’s sold out everywhere I look 😭)
I've heard Tor (I think??) is going to publish it again this November. I'm reading it now on my kindle and I'm loving it. I'll absolutely NEED a physical copy on my shelf.
Regarding your issue with salads- would you do better with smoothies? I know texture-wise they're very different, but they're also my summer go-to meal when I don't want hot cooked food.
This was a really lovely vlog to watch. I’m so glad you enjoyed Nettle & Bone! It is very genre-defying, manages to be both dark and lighthearted at the same time. I’m very excited to get to more T. Kingfisher soon. Lady’s Guide to Celestial Mechanics is one I have had my eye on for a long time, glad to hear it was good.
This sounds like it was a fun and relaxing reading weekend. I just finished What Moves The Dead by T. Kingfisher today and I am calling it “cozy horror.” Now I am super interested in reading Nettle & Bone. Also, The Care and Feeding of Waspish Widows is also a great historical romance by Olivia Waite. I would 100% recommend it
I think I liked Blood Heir for most the things you didn't, I miss Kate and she gives me Kate vibes lol. Loved seeing some of the shifters from Kate Daniels as well. 😁 I am curious about Nettle and Bone but not sure, I have read two books from T. Kingfisher one I liked (Hollow Places) one was just meh (Twisted Ones) so the odds I could like it are 50/50 lol.
Glad you had a good reading weekend! I have also been struggling with reading-- longer work hours, other obligations and distractions.. typical stuff. I am forcing myself to finish slogging through The Book of Cold Cases this afternoon and then I will do a mood selection!
I was a bit nervous for the Nettle & Bone review TBH because Kingfisher is an all time fave for me. If you want more like this one Swordheart, The Clocktaur Wars duology, and the Paladin series are similar. The Hollow Places was good IMO, but not a fave for me. The characters were great though & I find that's consistent with her.
YES MARA I'm so glad you loved Nettle & Bone!! I've been loudly recommending T. Kingfisher for a few years now and it makes me SO HAPPY that she's having such a book blogging Moment. I'm halfway through Nettle & Bone and I'm loving it too Lady's Guide has been the only modern (in terms of pub. date) historical romance I've vibed with and I really feel like it's partly because a sapphic romance gets rid of so much of the gross power dynamic!!
I love to see a new T. Kingfisher fan. You may enjoy her Saint of Steel series, which are romantic fantasy. I love her horror novels too, though they have zero romance. A f/f historical rec: A Little Light Mischief by Cat Sebastian. I'm still waiting in vain for Iron Covenant news as well. Great vlog.
I want to read Nettle and Bone. Happy you liked it. Have been eyeing it for a while. Recently read my first T. Kingfisher, The Raven and The Reindeer, and loved it so much. I am glad she is prolific. I also enjoy that she tends to write novellas. Great for me. :)
I read Paladin’s Grace by T. Kingfisher a couple weeks ago and had the same experience. It had dark themes, but felt incredibly light, safe, and funny? It was a delight.
I’m jealous. Everyone seems to be loving Nettle and Bone, but I DNFed it at 40%. The protagonist irritated me because she is supposed to be 30 and felt like 16, and I think she was just too passive for my taste. It also skimmed over the storylines that I found most interesting, for example the details of how the cloak and bone dog came to be. I’m glad you loved it though.
I had the same issue with Blood Heir, it felt like instead of giving us the Julie and Derek that we knew and loved, they did a massive time jump and gave us Kate Daniels 2.0.
I was so conflicted about it, because I do love the world and I loved Kate Daniels as a character; but I just didn't want the exact same thing from Julie
Hi Mara! I can't wait to read Nettle & Bone now! Also, I found almost the entire Kate Daniels series used and looking forward to getting started based on your recommendation. Zoe :)
Glad I'm not the only one who felt that way about Blood Heir. It felt like they took a lot of the "Julie traits" from the Kate Daniel's series out of her. I think the Hidden Legacy and Inn Keeper have tied for my favorite series from them now. But, I will always quickly devour their books 📚. I've already finished Ruby Fever. Between Andrews, Briggs, Bishop, Shearin, Crais and Horowitz-I just can't keep an unread book on the shelf for them for more than a few days 🤷♀️ Then I'm all write faster, faster I say🤨😡😭🤦♀️. Loving the longer cat 🐈 cameos. Maybe there's another cats choose your books in our future?🧞♂️
Damn, I faced the same "questioning how I feel about Kate Daniels" moment after reading Blood Heir last year (I then reread KD. I still love it to pieces). I gave Blood Heir 3.5 stars too because it's Ilona Andrews so I still inhaled the thing despite its flaws. But they did make Julie very much like Kate, which is a weird move considering how not-like-Kate she was in the main serie... Yet now she is Kate, but with a spear instead of a sword. I also have some shipping nonsense to scream about but I know that's just me being unfair so I'll shut up. I should never be allowed to start talking about IA books because I could do so for hours. Just like you I'm now looking at all the IA series and wondering which ones are gonna get a next book or not (so I can inhale it and reread half of their backlist after to scratch the itch). Anyhow, I'm glad you still had a good time with Blood Heir! I'm looking forward to a podcast episode about it ** Thank you for the lovely video!
Yeah, it's difficult, because I do just LOVE what IA does... pretty much any of their books are going to make me happy. But one thing I've enjoyed about the Hidden Legacy series is seeing a different type of heroine with Catalina (and looks like Arabella, too). It adds variety to the core formula of their work that I love; so it's disappointing to see what I view as a step back with this iteration of Julie/Aurelia
@@bookslikewhoa They did such a good job in Hidden Legacy that it's a bit surprising they faltered here. I don't know if you were reading Blood Heir when they were drafting it on their vlog, but I feel like they improved some character stuffs in the final version at least. So I'm holding hopes that maybe they'll do some sort of reveal that will change the way I see this first book (the hope is flimsy though, even if I just read Ruby Fever so I know what kind of reveals they can pull off). I do hope this is a one off in term of step back and that if we get Arabella book(s) (fingers crossed for that) she won't be a copy of one of her sisters. As of now, I'm giving IA the benefit of the doubt because I truly do love their books and even the ones I only like are always a good time
I loved Nettle and Bone SO MUCH that I'm actually designing a knitted sock pattern on it. It blew me away and fired up all my book-inspired knitwear designing furnaces. Incredible.
I agree! Nettle and Bone is SO GREAT! Could be one of my all time favorites!
Kingfisher is just doing so well in all different genres. one of my favourite authors ever.

Angela, I honestly just need to take all your recs :D
2mins in, cat petting and Ilona Andrews. I'm so ready for this vlog.
Glad you enjoyed it!

Me too!! Excited to read more from her
I really love your house, it looks so cozy and comfy!
Thank you!! 😊
Glad your poll went with Nettle and Bone. The Hollow Places is not what I'd call a relaxing read.
She has some fantasy romances that are lighter than N&B.
I had a water based nightmare after reading The Hollow Places & telling someone, Eh it wasn't that scary. 😅
Nettle and Bone is a great sample of T. Kingfisher's work and I can't recommend the rest of her works enough, especially the Paladins series - same cozy feels laced with some hard-hitting horrory moments.
Paladin book 1 is already on the way to me! :)
This vlog has reminded me how much I enjoyed having a cat, and now I'm seriously considering adopting a kitten...
My cats are honestly my babies... they bring me so much joy :)
Love your kitty kat! Great video!

It's so good! I think you would like Nettle & Bone; I'm about to start a deep dive into her backlist so will keep you posted :D

Chronically online, party of one! :D

Yes, this definitely made me crave more T Kingfisher!!
I love your cats
The paying guest by Sarah Waters is definitely my favorite historical sapphic romance!!

All the Nettle & Bone love has me so eager for my library hold to finally come in ☠️ Love the Marple and Hastings content 😻
YAY I hope you enjoy it! Definitely lived up to the hype for me :)

Ooo thanks for the rec!!
If you are after a sapphic historical novel try "Tipping the Velvet" by Sarah Waters.Or for just a rollicking read "Fingersmith" also by her.
Haven’t read anything by T Kingfisher, but I want to!
So good!!
Your kitties are so sweet! Glad you feel more invigorated.Love your insightful reviews:)
They are spoiled to death and I love it :D

Yay! So glad you loved Nettle and Bone! I adore T. Kingfisher's writing but I haven't gotten to that one yet.
It's so good!
So happy to see a new video! 👏🏽
Yay! Thank you!
I like what I'm assuming is your bedroom curtains

Could definitely see that! I think because she came of age in a convent, the naivete made sense to me

Do you already have any Ilona Andrews podcast episodes?
Not yet! Season 2 will be Innkeeper Chronicles

Possibly! I enjoy those so... no hardship
Please check out her Paladin's series since you enjoyed Nettle and Bone. Very similar vibes
It's already on the way to me 😏

I tried to start the Kate Daniel’s series but the beginning of the first book felt so fat-phobic I just wasn’t enjoying it.
Can definitely see that - I always tell people to skip that first book anyways, and come back to it, because the world building is clunky
