Nice video my friend. I’ve forgotten how much fun it is to fish with a fly rod. That bluegill was really nice.

It really is alot of fun! I need some serious practice to get better with it. Fly fishing has its own laws of physics that take time to acclimate to

Me too! Problem was knots in my leader from bad casting technique. I gotta remember to check the leaders more often. So weird how if your casting is off the line will self tie little knots on the back cast

Wow, look at you, whipping out the fly rod, so proud of you!! Beautiful pond too, looks like a wonderful evening for top water action. Leave the popper on the water for a split second longer and then strip set the hook instead of lifting the rod. Hopefully that will get you more fish on the fly. :D

Thanks man! I appreciate any advice!
Totally self taught and I think I developed some bad habits. I have a few fly fishing rigs this is a 3 wt 7 ft. I have a 2 wt a 4wt and a 5 wt. The 3 is my favorite. I need more practice and to learn that bow and arrow cast

@@DrDitchpickle I'm always happy to help!! I don't think it's bad habits, I could be wrong since I don't know how to fish that way, but I believe the slack in the line comes from fishing conventional lures where you probably want to keep that slack. Fly fishing with poppers is different enough that it doesn't translate and when you fish the poppers you want little to no slack. Same with fishing streamers. There are of course exceptions.

@@DrDitchpickle Also, that's a nice selection of rods you have. Awesome!!! I personally prefer the lighter weights but when throwing large flies, sometimes my 2wt is overpowered. Yes, practice is the key and they actually sell practice rod with a fake line to practice at home. Honestly, you can make one of those yourself or practice in a grass patch.

@@DrDitchpickle Lastly, when you get hung up in the grass behind you, that may be because of your back-cast is being too low. Instead of the 10 to 2, try to lift the rod. That may be difficult to explain via comment, but on the face of a clock, try to connect 7 or 8 with 1 o'clock in a straight line. So the rod tip moves in a straight diagonally upward line. This will lead the fly to clear any grass behind you. Use the tension of the fly line on the water to load the rod, so you eliminate the need for a false cast.
You are fishing so many beautiful ponds near you, hopefully you can take your fly rods for another spin, totally make a killing with plenty of top-water action, and then make another awesome video from that footage!!
