Edit: after reading the iliad, they did know it was from the greeks, they left one soldier that made a story about him and the horse being a sacrifice
(to idk which goddess but I think it's athena??)
Meanwhile the greek army just sailed far enough away so the search party won't be able to see them and went back at dusk i think, and then they destroyed troy at night

tbh, in mythology, the Trojan Horse is indeed said to be wooden, but they mention its surface material to be grey and shiny, and i dont think there is any type of wood matching these describings
