I think the phrase "no homo" is really dumb, so I came up with a few "no ___" phrases of my own. Any other ideas? What phrases creep you out?

As an older progressive, have you ever considered the fact that your outrage culture, where you seem to get excited at the opportunity to be offended, often on other people's behalf, is the reason for the counter-culture that produces things like the Trump phenomenon? If even classical liberals like myself find you intolerable with your desire to control all facets of people's lives including joking quips as language police, you can only imagine how much it must annoy the neo-cons who are only going to double-down in response and get so much worse.

I have an idea, a twist, to the "no homo" thing. If you saw the phrase just for its informational content and not as a deprecatory judgement of a sexual orientation, then it could be even seen as an indicator of change in society towards acceptance. Why? Because it indicates that the person who is speaking actually considers that every person might have an equal chance of being gay or bi or heterosexual. Not like in former times, where homosexuality just wasn't thought about, much less talked about. "Those people" just didn't exist in your social cirlcles. They existed some where, but not around you. Or so they thought. So in that respect, the speaker acknowledges that homo and bisexuality exist AND that you cannot necessarily detect them from outward signs. He or she helps to clarify. t's like saying "I know that what I just did could be either interpreted as just friendly affection or as erotic/romantic inclination. And although it is compete OK or normal to be attracted to someone of the same sex or gender, in this specific case I want you to know that I wasn't trying to send romantic or erotic signals. Just so you don't respond to anything that wasn't there in the first place and the are disappointed or embarrased later." But that's a little long, so they came up with the short casual phrase "No homo" :) I know it's an unusual way to look at it, but I like to look at things from more than one perspective.
See, what strikes me as "off" about the analogies you use is, that you are comparng "no homo" to things thatare actually a) very rare b) really pathologica and c) not normal. So of course you wouldn't have to say "no beasto" or "no klepto" because no one should assume those things about you as a default in the first place. But assuming that the other person may be gay or bi just the same as they might be hetero is actually a progressive thin to do. Abd it makes clarification necessary. Because flirting signals - whether hetero, bi or gay - aren't always clear or easy to interpret

It's wonderful to see such a young, articulate, and intelligent woman of color portraying such important/relevant messages rather than just nonsense . I'm all about diminishing stereotypes and norms so it makes me hopeful to see someone in social media already doing the ground work :-) loving it!

I definitely feel the skin crawling sensation whenever I hear this phrase.
I remember once a gay friend of mine said when someone says "no homo" all he hears is "homo." I can kinda see what he means. It's like saying "I'm so afraid of you all thinking I might be gay that I need to make it super clear that I'm not" and a lot of the time people who are very insecure about something are hiding their own tendency toward that thing. I think the homophobic gay people thing is a little overblown (though there's a lot of evidence to say there's something to it) but I kind of think he had a point.

first, thanks for your honesty. i can totally hear where you're coming from. i'm not trying to censor anyone. people can use whatever language they want, and when they say something that offends me, i'm going to tell them because that's the kinda person i am. i don't stay quiet when it comes to my feelings. often times that's a huge flaw. lol
you're right, so many people have no idea that "gypped" was originally used to describe the Romani people. this is something I actually learned a few years ago after saying it in a youtube video and someone calling me out for it. unfortunately the word has become so convoluted that the average person has no where the word came from or that the Romani are real people and not just fictional movie characters.

@gkparks1 i honestly have no idea what you're trying to say. what does it matter what people thought 50 years ago? i'm not an alien. i can't go back in time. i'm not interested in what people thought of homosexuality 50 years ago. i have friends that have been beaten and thrown out of their homes for being gay. so yes, i believe they are brave for being who they are despite the fact that many ignorant people pass judgement on them because of who they choose to love

@FrozenPetrolPie yes, complimenting a person CAN mean you're sexually attracted to them. it's for that reason I encourage you to use "no beasto" and "no pedo" when complimenting animals and children since you COULD be sexually attracted to them. not to mention those qualifiers are equally as ridiculous and idiotic as "no homo" :)
