So what are the chances I will be ever able to buy a HT with integrated M17? Don't all the manufacturers have an exclusive digital mode, e.g. YSF for Yaesu, D-Star for Icom etc? I understand many hams like prototyping and experimenting with stuff like this (learning is good!) but I am curious about its future.

I thought this was going to be on the Sig Sauer M17...lol. That I understand. This open source digital mode stuff leaves me feeling like a monkey trying to open a glass jar to get to the peanut... Glad to have Jason's videos so I can at least use DMR. A man's got to know his limitations.... 😎

To me, dogi modes remind me of the movie TOY STORY. Seems there is a new digi mode every so often, and everybody has to have it.
During the Uri ice storm and TS Nick in H-Town, the only digi mode which was in use was the flavors of VARA with Winlink messages. Digi modes mostly depend on the Net. The NET is not bullet much less George Jetson proof. During Uri I was passing traffic to the 7290 net on a 703 on battery power. The only way to get some news was listening to the 147.000 machine. When the defication hits the ventilation, HF CW, HF phone, HF VARA, V/UHF phone, V/UHF VARA are the backbones now. If a digi mode can become G. Jetsen proof, then I will get it.
