In this video:
The three legged dog in question was a black Cocker Spaniel left in the back seat of the lone car abandoned on the galloping bridge. The dog was owned by reporter Leonard Coatsworth, though his wife stated in an interview that it was her dog. (No doubt it went over really well when he told her he’d left the dog in the car when he abandoned it on the doomed bridge!)

Holy crap! I thought that footage of the bridge wobbling was sped up, then those people came into frame! 😮
same!
Yeah. It's trippy as hell. But think of seeing it as a 5 year old.
People were smoother back then. Nothing ruffled them.
There was no internet. You had to experiance things like this yourself back then.
This guy uses like bots.
We're pleased you made it all the way to the NW.
If you'd like to stay there ...we'll adopt you!
_Have you and the production crew done the Washington State Ferry System walk-on and walk-off to VICTORIA, British Columbia yet? You won't regret it!_
I already know this story, RIP Mr Doggo.
If you are from Tacoma or adjoining area like Fife, Spanaway, Parkland, Gig Harbor, etc you learn about this in elementary school or maybe earlier.
Zandandido
Nah, I’m from England.
Just know this story because I studied Physics.
@@georgeagar4210 well awesome. I promise you the new bridges don't have that problem anymore. And ol' Gerdie has became a home to many species of sealife, including the Giant Pacific Octopus, the largest octopus in the world.
You'd never learn this in school, as it's history.Okay, I'll fess up. Way back when I was in ... junior high? ... one teacher mentioned Galloping Gertie. I recall this only because he said one car was on the bridge when it fell. He said it was a Volkswagen. That'd be quite a feat.
After the bridge collapse that dog didn't have a leg to stand on.
UberNeuman Oh! This is too much!! 😂😂
I would say something to that, but the cat got my tongue.
UberNeuman Oh! from me too. However, I thought your post was so funny even though I have a 3 legged rescue doggie. Tony from England, seems we brits enjoy dry humour unlike that tripod dog... :)
Now that was a bad joke. Funny, but also in very poor taste. But still funny.
Lowell Leland Nice reply, I have to agree my reply was in poor taste. However sometimes we use humour as a excuse to shield us from the reality of adversity.
Ooh, on location
Yeah this is new! Do you like it?
It's pretty cool you're doing these videos in the Washington Area. Would have been cool to meet you. Anyway, one of the reasons why this twisting kept getting larger in magnitude was due to resonance. To avoid this in the future, those new Bridges are equipped with huge dampeners underneath and has become a staple discussion topic in vibrations classes. Also, I don't know the validity of this, but it's been told that the reef that the remains of the old bridge made is so deep under that there are new species and even a giant squid down there? You know how rumors go.
, I live here it's true. And the current that goes through there is almost impossible for a diver to manage. They have to hit it at the high where it's not going in or out. Some incredible statistics on that if you want to look them up
It's octopus. The giant Pacific octopus is underneath the bridges and has made the old bridge it's main home.
The giant octopi are real. They stay down out of sight for the most part. Puget Sound is very deep.
Washington is the best.
@@deadfreightwest5956 it's quite surprising how damn deep the Sound is.
0:41 looks like a 40's Betty Boop cartoon, everything's wobbly and silly.
Less silly when it snaps and you plummet to your death, but ya know.
Yeah haha less silly more..."AHHHHHH OH MY GOOODDDDD AHHHHHH!"
This title sounds like the start of a dark joke...
You had my curiosity. Now you have my attention 🧐
I can't get over that you were in my state!
Same
My hometown, it's weird knowing where all the locations in this video are exactly.
@@samwhaleIV pretty trippy. I've walked across that bridge so many times.
I lived like 3 blocks from where he's standing right at the end of the video. So cool to see.
@@cireyenned
Is that Titlow? My mom thinks it might be.
Watching this in North Tacoma 😊 So glad to see that you visited us Mr. Whistler I am a longtime fan and this made my day ,Thank You 😄
I used to drive the bridge everyday, damn toll was $5.
Adjusted for inflation, it'd be $90 today. Glad the thing came crashing down.
The toll is about $6.50 nowadays
Zandandido I guess only rich people live in Gig Harbor anyway so they can afford it.
@@Gewehr_3 pretty much. My friend lives near the cliffside on the Northside on gig harbor near the water
Zandandido That’s a beautiful view, I was over on Fox Island. Now I live in Denver and hate my life
Moved to the Tacoma area in 1989 courtesy of the US Army. Fell in love with the area and decided to stay. Galloping Bertie predates us, but it's always interesting to see it again. Thanks for the vid.
Interesting new style for the video!! The original Tacoma Narrows Bridge had a "sister bridge," the Bronx-Whitestone Bridge in NYC, USA. The bridge also behaved in a similar, but less severe fashion. After the TNB collapsed, the engineers went to work on the Whitestone. They added a "stiffening truss" on each side of the roadway that's around 20 feet high to stiffen the deck; these were removed in the early 2000'a and a different method of stiffening was used that lowered the weight of the bridge's deck. They also added cable stays from the towers to the bridge deck on the approaches and main span. It is still in operation today.
I love Simon. He entertains me, and is greatly comprehensible. Xoxo
Press F to pay respects to the three-legged dog. RIP!

Do more vlogs like this, its really cool!!!
Seth Masters, agreed!! 👍
agreed too! Would love to see more like this! I like how they've really starting to experiment with the content on this channel! It's refreshing to see! Which has been your favourite?
Aspect Science I really like this one, its really neet that the background was the actual place for the days video. I really like a couple other of the top tenz videos he has done.
Galloping Gertie's successor was given the nickname Sturdy Gertie. I like that.
There are many videos about the Tacoma Bridge. It's a fascinating history to study!
I actually live in Tacoma so I’ve been hearing the story my whole life. Nice to see the story isn’t forgotten.
Always glad to see a home town feature get love. RIP three legged dog
My grandfather and great uncle worked on that and the new bridges. It was the columns that stayed up they built. Those columns are still there. I can say most of Tacoma and Seattle my grandfather help build. He also in the 19th was in the news. Two men fell off one of the new skyscrapers in Seattle being built. He was the one who lived. Just had to wear a neck brace for a week then was back at work. He worked until he was 78 climbing building.
This is a cool format
Yeah I really like it. Adds some more personality to the whole thing too. What do your reckon?
It is so neat to see you out of the office in the world. Very refreshing. Loved it.
I moved to Bremerton in 1992. We drove from NY. Took 6 days. The very 1st time over the narrows, it was very foggy. I didn't realize how tall it was. (Only 1 bridge then). The next day had to go to Tacoma. Not foggy that time. OMG it's very tall. I knew of that bridge from documentaries. But, I didn't know this was that bridge. It was cool to learn that 1, engineers learned from it and 2 the artificial reef made it possable for more sea life to live there. Without it, the water is too strong of a current to do so. We moved back to the east coast in 2003. Never saw the new bridge. My favorite place to live.
Here watching after Simon's new video about the bridge.
I'm watching this from just a few miles away from the topic! Driving over the '53 bridge is a delight in any high wind. You have the steering wheel cranked over (2 or 10 o'clock, typically) then you pass one of the towers and instantly your car veers the the other way. Fun stuff. Oh, and don't even think of taking a boat through the Narrows at tide change. Approaching it from Point Defiance, you are literally looking up a series of falls. Of water. The current is that strong.
I'm digging this onsite format. It's got a casual feel that's pretty refreshing.
We studied this bridge in two different classes when I was studying to be an engineer. After the bridge opened, and it had started swaying, they called that engineer. He told them to drill holes in it, to allow air to pass through. It was a matter of days after his recommendation that the bridge got much worse. He went down, and that's the story you finished telling. In our math class, we studied Eigen values, and how they pertain to resonance in a differential equation. The wind stream, was at the right resonance to hit the Eigen value for the harmonics of the bridge, and that is what caused it to get worse and worse. I used to truck drive over that bridge. When it was just one bridge, I was crossing it and I saw a side wind blow the trailer of the semi in front of me into oncoming traffic. Luckily, there was a break in traffic at that exact moment and it didn't hit any cars. My manager asked me how nuts I was to cross that bridge in a semi, when he (even being a former truck driver) hated crossing it in his car, let alone a semi.
You should have gone up to Hood Canal Floating Bridge too. That was fun crossing when the water would be really rough on one side, but completely calm on the other, and having water splash on top.
I drive over this bridge most days of the week. It would have been sweet to have seem you while driving by. Anyway I think it’s awesome you’re doing this on location. This channel just keeps getting better.
Great video. My cousin was one of the structural engineers during construction of the newest bridge. He sent us pics regularly, and the ones from the top of the towers are incredible!
You should go and check out Deception Pass on Whidbey Island. Great history there and super pretty.
Simon what are doing here in Washington state??? BTW ..there is a chunk of the original galloping gurdy in the Washington state history museum .. In down town Tacoma . its on the second floor..
There's another small chunk of it in the aquarium at Point Defiance zoo.
@@alindasue omg.. That's right I forgot..
Born and raised in Tacoma. I always think about that when I cross the bridge.
Like the new style 😄
Hello, Simon. Welcome to Tacoma! My grandparents would tell us stories about Galloping Gertie, how the bouncing of the bridge would would cause the road in front of them to seemingly disappear while they were driving. Some of the people crossing Galloping Gertie may have been doing so for the thrill, but the fact is that a bridge in that location cuts around three hours off the drive from Tacoma and several small cities on the Peninsula.
I am very impressed with the ramped up production quality recently. Keep up the good work guys!
He seems to be spending a lot of time in the Pacific Northwest lately. That's fine and dandy, hope he enjoys it.
The largest octopus in the world is underneath those bridges. So god damned beautiful off those bridges. From Tacoma.
The original replacement bridge, (the second one built), was actually built using the towers from the first. After the collapse, it was determined that the towers had not been damaged and were still viable.
Oh, and the bloke in charge of engineering for the original bridge was a fellow named Joseph Strauss: Also known for leading the efforts to build a quaint little suspension bridge over San Francisco's Golden Gate Channel.
Wow! Our boy out of the studio on location! Love it! Welcome to America
I broke down on the narrows bridge once, a terrifying experience.
Welcome to the Pacific Northwest!
Hope you enjoyed your time here, come back anytime.
Hello, from Tacoma!
Hello, from London!
This film of the bridge collapse is shown in numerous physics classes on the topic of wave motion.
Can't wait to watch. Born and raised Tacoma gig harbor!!was alive when new bridge was built after collapse and after a second bridge was added..i drive over it weekly
If you go under the west side of the bridge (Gig Harbor side) and climb down the hillside there is still wreckage (girder beams) jammed into the hillside.
My grandfather complained, that when the bridge fell, it scared the fish away. He said that was the best lingcod fishing hole in the Sound!
My father, as he was growing up, said at times, he felt he had to crawl, to get across.
The bridge fell due to resonating wave action. The wind whipped the bridge into vibrating action. Once the resonance wave length was reached, the bridge collapsed.
I understand, marching can also do the same to a bridge. In the Bible, wasn't this how the walls of Jericho were toppled? The sounds of the trumpets, caused the walls to vibrate.
It is real interesting to walk across the bridge. It still "flutters", just not nearly as much.
Welcome to the Northwest! I was raised in Seattle and after many travels and living in a number of US cities coast to coast, returned to live a bit further north, up by Birch Bay. Jus few miles south of the Canadian border. I've of gone over these bridges countless times and my dad used to tell me stories of driving over Galloping Gertie. Iconic Northwest history! Thx for covering it!
Thank you for doing your homework, almost all others just say high winds and it blew down!
Good to see you make it out to our part of the world... You should come up north to Everett and talk about the world famous tire fire... it was on the Simpsons for quite a while...
There's a similar pair of bridges connecting New Jersey with Delaware across the mouth of the Delaware River.....there they had planned only one bridge, but by the time they had completed the first bridge, it was already clear that it was sufficient for the volume traffic, so they simply built another identical bridge using the same plans......a fine example of efficient use of an engineering design....
It's like Tom Scott but without a red shirt and hair
I live right there off the narrows first exit off the bridge. I also collect the toll for the bridge leaving gig harbor going into Tacoma. Another fun fact is that right around the corner where you’re at is a dog park dedicated to that dog his name was Tubby and the park was named Tubby Park after him. I love your channel!
Simon I live in Tacoma are you still here? would love to see you and meet you man!
Freaking near Titlow Beach and Steamers at 3:03
It's always cool to see UA-camrs/people you follow in places you know. I don't know if you watch him - well I don't even know if he uploads anymore - but Ben Brown lives literally 10 minutes from me so seeing his videos in my local area every time is so surreal!
You picked a grate time to visit Tacoma Washington. The weather in late summer is the best in the country, but from October to June it rains, all the time...
I really enjoyed this on Location vid. The outtakes were a great touch! Keep up the good work!
I was once dumped by a bridge, but I got over it.
I walked across that bridge yesterday!
Yeah I walked across it once and it is one hell of a fall but the water is deep and cold coming in from the ocean. And with the tide comes winds.
When I saw the old footage O_O. I would have not cross that bridge for sure in a car at the time .....it is a miracle no one died beside the dog.
Loved the bloopers at the end...too funny. :)
Old bridge - Galloping Gurdy
New bridge - Sturdy Gurdy
WOW!!! This format was AMAZING!!!!!!!!!
Love hearing all of this history of my state
I’m glad you’re trying out new things for the channel
Wow.....I'd have taken one look at that wiggling bridge and said "Oh Hell No!!" turned around and ran the other way. Thanks for the info guys. I'm glad to see ya'll can get out and about once in a while. Love all your work as usual!
I like the direction y'all are going, and I liked the bloopers at the end, a nice touch.
Seeing the swaying bridge in that old video looks like a wiggling jell-o to me.
That dogs name must have been "LUCKY"! LOL Sweet home Tacoma! I just added the video to my "Washington State" collection.
Hey! Welcome to my neck of the woods! I hope you enjoyed your time in Washington!
The original design called for 25 ft high stiffening trusses, which would have served to stiffen the bridge. But, the design was deemed too costly at $11 million (boy, the dollar sure had some value), so a less expensive design was selected which deleted the stiffening trusses and instead used 8 ft high plate girders reducing the cost to $8 million. The result was a bridge that was less resistant to bending and twisting.
Love the beginning. Thanks for the great content!
Wow. Another video in my home state?? This keeps getting better and better!😍😍
the main two towers of the original bridge are still there, they reused them for the replacement bridge.
I took a close look at the car that was stranded on the bridge during the sway incident. It looked like the dog was sticking half of it's body out of the driver side window, when the momentum of the bridge was zigging and pulling it's body back into the vehicle when the bridge was zagging in the opposite direction.
Crossover that bridge every day for 6 months the wind that hit you can be really strong
Definitely like that you're "on location".
Love the Bloopers at the end.
Good video, out of morbid curiosity, I was reading about bridge collapses the other day. I was actually talking to my mother about the one in Tampa, because she lived in St Petersburg, not long after that. She said that she was aware of the bridge collapsing, but she wasn't there when it happened.
Most people leave out mentioning the Bronx Whitestone Bridge.... the same design as the Tacoma Narrows Bridge. It is now part of I-678 and has an alternate name.
I liked seeing a few outtakes at the end, great work on the video :)
First space needle and now Tacoma Narrows? You spoil us! I had my senior pictures done at the Narrows. You should also head to Mount Rainier. Such a beautiful place. Then West port/Ocean Shores. I would love to hear about the jetty there. Mount St Hellens and the APE caves would be right up your alley too. So much to do here.
Simon came to America and I just found out?!? This has managed to wreck my Monday.
Hahahah!
More bloopers please!
I hope you have sunblock cream on your head Simon out in that Sun 😂
This video hits close to home, lol. I know all of the locations you filmed from for this one as Gig Harbor is my hometown (first town on the western side of the bridges). It’s awesome you are able to travel and visit a lot of these locations you are doing stories on now.
I cross that bridge fairly regularly.
That's where I live. How crazy!
So cool seeing you in the area I grew up in! I immediately clicked on the video when I saw you were in Tacoma, hope you enjoy Washington.
Quebec bridge collapsed into the st-laurence river, not once, but twice during the construction.
Love the new video!!! And your in my home state!!! Welcome to Washington!!!! Hope you enjoyed your stay!
Man, you were 10 minutes from my place and didn't even stop by? Hope you got a chance to visit some of the Olympic peninsula. You picked the right time of year to visit.
Bro, I live here in Tacoma, hope you enjoyed yourself. We have lots of awesome stuff.
Really cool to see you exploring my local area! Would've been awesome to get to meet you!
Hope you enjoyed your time in Seattle!
You're 30min from me in WA welcome to PNW
What a coincidence. Just this morning in my engineering class at school, we went over the Tacoma Narrows Bridge collapse.
Oh my god, Simon is so cute!
Love the outakes! ♡
really like how you're actually out and not in the studio :)
