      Hi Buzz. Last year we did a three month exploratory trip using AirBnB apartments for a month in Bogota, then Manta, Ecuador, and then Cuenca. This year we used an AirBnB for 2 weeks while we used a broker to help us find this apartment. She spoke fluent English and it didn't cost us a thing (she gets a commission from the landlord). There are also "medium term" apartments in Cuenca for one month stays, and many people search listings on the Gringo Post (gringopost.com), I just saw a 2br/2ba furnished for $550 ... If you're going unfurnished, be aware that often means zero furnishings, no fridge, stove, washer/dryer etc.

There are some areas with higher concentrations of expats than others, but I don’t think there are any neighborhoods that are a majority Expats. Electric fencing? Why is that necessary if Cuenca is a safe place to live?

    • @WarrenJulieTravel
      @WarrenJulieTravel  4 роки тому +2

      Good question, most homes here have high walls windows with bars and electric wires around the top. It’s probably a reason crime is so low, few would want to go through that much effort.

    • @chasesquiresecuador
      @chasesquiresecuador 4 роки тому +2

      It's fairly common in South American cities. There are crimes of opportunity here like anywhere. But our neighbors here routinely leave their bicycles outside unlocked. In Denver where we lived, you do that, the bike is gone in 10 minutes. We also have bars on our windows in Denver (ground floor apartment). And in Denver when I had a car, I had a "club" on the steering wheel. The club had been broken for years, but the message was "There's another Suby on this block, probably easier to steal, go find it. Sometimes the appearance discourages break-ins.

      If you notice they have about $900 of fluff in their budget to go out, party, etc.
      We are releasing a $1,000 budget tomorrow.

      @@WarrenJulieTravel Awesome job guys thanks, very informative, I guess for me its kinda sticker shock, i, as I'm sure most folks have a misconception about Ecuador and so it was very eye opening and beautiful to see like you said they have about $900 a month fluff that we probably wouldn't. We have been considering all the areas they have visited and scouted out and to be honest up until just a few days ago when we stumbled upon other expats that had posted from Ecuador that came via UA-cam's you might be interested suggestions as we have been considering the Caribbean for years now and just spreading out as we travel more thinking for our retirement prep.

      @@dadedubbledee We may not be the norm. We enjoy going out and do spend more time in restaurants and bars than most. But be aware, even for the frugal, there are startup costs to get here -- visas, facilitators or attorneys, travel costs, apartment deposits, etc. Even the most frugal won't enjoy cost savings the first year because of the costs of getting set up. Also we haven't yet needed to buy new clothes, which can be expensive or hard to find here (in our sizes). Ecuador uses the US dollar, so there's no exchange rate advantage like in Colombia. We lived in Florida for a long time, and hurricane activity in the Caribbean was something we wanted no part of.
