Great video. I played for Balmain police boys. Our home ground was Birchgrove oval but we played many games at Leichhardt oval and watched my beloved tigers many more times. Let’s hope Leichhardt oval lives on in the NRL

This deserves more views, good job. I watched this because I used to be a ball boy for Balmain/tigers. It was amazing, being in the change rooms, and just seeing everything. I loved!

Grew up playing in the Balmain junior comp and all the juniors received season passes for the hill so I spent every second weekend for over a decade watching games at Leichhardt Oval.

This documentary truly encapsulates the essence of what Rugby league is .Rugby League just like Football is the working man's and the people's game .I'm a Warriors fan ,Auckland's Carlaw Park was similar to Leichardt Oval. CP was an inner city ground close to the wharves and factories of Auckland City . But Carlaw Park became run down and tired . The Warriors had no other choice but to take Mount Smart. The Mount is still a modern ground like CP. Mount Smart is in a working class suburb close to blue collar factories. The move was a good one in keeping to the traditions of rugby league. as a Warriors fan I would have loved to see them make Carlaw Park their home BUT onwards and upwards at Mount Smart . GO THE WARRIORS !! UP THE TIG-PIES !!

Balmain Tigers now sadly a Warriors fanatic. Those two GF defeats still hurt. Traditional old school atmospheric passionate ground don't dare close it

If they remake the stadium, they will lose the culture. It will never be the same. I am a Dragons fan through and through, but Leichhardt Oval is something else. Long live Leichhardt Oval.

Great film. The feeling at a suburban ground is awesome when everyone is roaring.

Yeah, but the first time that I ever attended a Sydney Rugby League match, on the way to the venue, the crowd roar[s] put the wind up me a little bit, but that was because it was the SCG and a crowd of nearly 50,000. And that was still the lower grades, probably still the Under 23s. Minor premiership round, not the finals. But you scroll back over the match stats for the 1970s and it was crowds of 4,000 through 7,000, sort of thing, for the most part, for those club home grounds like Leichhardt, Belmore, Lidcombe, Brookvale, Redfern, Kogorah, Henson Park, North Sydney Oval. The crowds and the venues may have totally changed since then, but I don't know about all that.

Quality video....Remember seeing Laurie Nicholls here in Leeds for the test match between Great Britain vs Australia & despite it being freezing he was shadow boxing on the perimeter of the pitch in just a vest ...All the best Tigers....👍

Some lovely footage here back in the days when Rugby League was truly a great game. It’s now 2020 and the game is sadly nothing like it was. It’s become manipulated by money and the media. Players rarely show club loyalty these days and jump ship at anytime to pursue more money. Laurie Nichols would turn in his grave.

NZ Warriors fan here , before the Warriors I was a massive BT fan , then when the Warriors came along I became a Warriors tragic. I would have loved my team to play at Carlaw Park. I reckon Carlaw and Leichardt are 2 inner city grounds with history. But Carlaw Park was run down and Mt Smart was a far better option. Sunday afternoon at The Mount is heaven on earth indeed

Great video, can you do a documentary for Belmore sports ground another ground they don't want to believe in. It's a damn shame that the Canterbury Bankstown bulldogs can't play 1st grade games there. Instead NRL, Canterbury football club, Canterbury council want to go to a concrete jungle out in homebush that only attracts 10,000 spectators. That extra large stadium has about as much atmosphere as a funeral. Furthermore the bulldogs home ground is also at their arch rival's home ground the Parramatta Eels. Are the NRL wacked or what.

This is a great memorial doco for me I was born in Balmain played juniors here Mum used to bring me till I was old enough to come on my own. The reason for the westigers not doing well is they have no spiritual heart so until you imbiciles in the board room wake up you have a team with no soul. Balmain 4 life.

is there a future for Leichhardt? it's really fucking sad that the question is even being asked.

  • @jonglewongle3438

What is that celebration at 17 seconds ? Looks like Neil Pringle and maybe Trevor Ryan hoisting maybe the coach. What would Balmain have had to celebrate in their time together at Balmain ? Winning the 1976 AMCO Cup. So that might be Paul Broughton, the then coach. That being the scenario then the following Sunday from that they were to be pushing turd uphill versus minor premiers Manly-Warringah in the final round of the minor premiership to make it a 3 way play off for the semis. And, guess what, they didn't make it. I think that was a turning point whereby people started to think of the midweek bullshit competition as interfering with the Sydney clubs late in the Sydney premiership and that maybe re-scheduling might be in order at some point. But Balmain took the AMCO Cup. A bird in the hand being worth two in the bush. Twenty grand, or whatever it exactly was, to the Leagues Club was apparently serious dough at the time.
