- Why did you subscribe to this channel? Or in fact, why do you subscribe to any channels? I'd be interested to know :)

I am Simon, a first year PhD candidate at the University of Exeter. I upload videos on bits of science which are relevant to what I do, and sometimes just because they're really cool.
Vlogs from Oxford students - / oxvlog
A theme brings a channel to my attention in a UA-cam search/Recommended videos/Related videos/Recommendation from other channels.
A good video makes me want to watch another one.
A good run of videos will generally make me want to subscribe.
A short while later I begin to feel attached to presenters and the channel brand.
Most of the time I will subscribe to channels due to a particular series. But there are many other channels that I subscribe to, like this one, where I subscribe for the personality of the UA-camr. Your initial selling point was obviously the Oxford insight videos, which are very rare on UA-cam.
gezzzaaaa i used to watch your runescape videos lol
Congratulations! You are so well deserving. Looking forward to you giving us a video from Vienna. Do some fun things not related to physics, at least a good local beer or two, and a concert, maybe some chocolate, or just a walk around. So happy to have subscribed to you. Answer to your question: I want to learn more, and you're a good teacher, and it is a pleasure to watch and learn from you.
They have to have good content and be easy to watch and a relatable or interesting personality is key. Vaguely consistent uploads are important too. I'm only subbed to about 25 people but when they upload their videos I have to watch them as soon as I can which sets them apart from other youtubers I'm not subbed to but still watch.
Congratulations dude!
The variety of your videos.. And the "how to study efficiently" just brought me here while i was lagged at some med school subjects.
Reasons I normally subscribe to a channel:
- Videos on it contain a wealth of interesting
or entertaining content.
For this channel in particular: I'm an As student, interested in applying to the MPhys course at Oxford, so naturally I'm interested in your atmospheric research - even though I have a pretty basic understanding of it.
hi Simon !
i personally subscribe to a channel because of the content and the theme of the videos like yours . i love your videos because i fell the topics that you talk about are really connecting . i have subscribed to more channels but mostly related to university life and study tips because at this moment this is what matters to me the most .
Hi Simon! ^^
I subscribe to most channels because I simply like the content but most of the time it's because when I look back it reminds me of a certain period of my life. Like, with you for example, I subscribed last Easter when I was studying for exams and setting my hopes high with universities. Other people like Dan and Phil, theslowmoguys and PewDiePie were the people that I first started watching and it reminds me of that time as well c:
i personally subscribed to your channel for instance, because i'm someone who's passionate about physics , i came across your channel during a search for videos about physics in oxford and i enjoyed the way you presented your experiences there so i wanted to benefit from them in my quest to hopefully becoming a physicist.
so therefore, i'm gonna say that the theme of a particular channel is what attracts me to it.
Hey Simon! I personally like your channel because I love to learn about how life is like on different universities. You are also a pretty cool guy :) cheers
After some investigation I've found this to be "the list" for me:
I subscribe to a channel when I think it has
- inspirational/motivating content
- educative content that I like (physics, music, maths)
- high quality content (not seven thousand videos doing the cinnamon challenge etc.),
or when I like the person that makes the videos.
Before I subscribe, I check the channel and its videos. If the video I watched happens to be the only interesting one, I don't subscribe.
Now and then I flick through my subscriptions and unsubscribe to channels I haven't watched since the last flick-through. This keeps my subscription box tidy and really something to look forward to when I promise myself a UA-cam video after studying.
Also, in May I'll do a big and scary English C2(+) test (CPE). In order to learn more vocabulary and check my pronunciation, I watch loads of UA-camrs who live in the UK.
All in all, I think my subscriptions really do have something in common; they have a story that they want to tell their audience, and they aren't making money from the channel by putting themselves to shame on camera.
Sorry that my answer is extremely long.
Vienna is beautiful. I'd probably move there after I'm done with university. You should charish every day, definetly go to Schönbrunn palace, it is absolutely stunning.
On a different subject, it really bothers me hearing physicists with masters\PhDs do computer work. It really terrifies me to think i'll be babysitting a computer 10 hours a day for 30 years. Definetly did not choose to study physics to do THAT.
Well on a more optimistic note... I hope your research goes well and that you will be recieving your PhD soon enough. Good luck Simon!
I subscribed to your channel because I've found some of your videos inspiring, the love and enthusiasm that you have for physics motivates me to see my course as more than just a series of exams to revise for. And I subscribe to youtube channels that I find entertaining and motivational :)
The content is what draws me in, although the personality of the presenter is a huge factor too.
I subscribed because I want to see how oxford students look like and be inspired by them. I realize that you, Simon, is friendly, hard working student. Good job with your PhD :)
The people on the channel keep me entertained, and let me forget about my worries for a few minutes each day.
I usually subscribe to a channel if I find the videos very funny, insightful or inspiring, or if I can relate to the vlogger's experience and want to listen to what they have to say. In your case, I subscribed because I study Engineering at Cambridge and was curious about what you had to say about both Oxford and science. And I want to decide whether or not I want to do a PhD :)
I subscribe for knowledge that I wouldn't be able to get otherwise but I stay for the person's personality (if they're annoying, I leave. so congratulations). Also congrats on the award :)
I usually subscribe to youtube channels because of personality . I also subscribe to channels which interest me and i'm nosy so I really like vlogs in particular . Have fun in Vienna!
Hi Simon, thanks for another great video! As for your question on the reasons to subscribe for UA-cam channels, for me that would be mostly topics discussed. So e.g. I love certain music, and I'd like to learn more about Oxbridge etc., so I subscribe for relevant channels.
You are so inspired when you talk about Physics and troposphere (is it correct ? :D).. And you sound like you really want this... I have ensure this... I have watched all of your videos... Continue to be like that Simon... You sound the same as me when I talk about surgery and medicine.. :D I do feel your passion...
That is what makes me subscribe... When I feel the person.. When I realize that he is sincere and he does this because he wants to do it (filming videos)...
Since I'm about to start making research papers, and I'm keen on learning everything from others' perspectives especially students, also I just love Oxford that freaking much, although science isn't my major, but you helped me thoroughly in getting to know more about it. Thus, I clicked the subscribe button. But the main reason I subscribe to any channels is the content. As long as it's beneficial in terms of gaining knowledge and for pleasure, also could inspire me in somewhat way, then why shouldn't I subscribe?
I don't think there's just one thing that makes me subscribe. Personally, it might just be that I see one brilliant video and regardless any other content I'll subscribe. I think also, it's down to a combination of factors like the personality of the person, the quality of the video ( in terms of content and how it's edited/filmed) and if they collab with any of my other favourite UA-camrs. So yeah, that's what does it for me! 👍
I subscribe to UA-cam channels because I'm interested in the content they create and I'm willing to follow them. In your particular case, I'm trying to learn more about Oxford and your channel allows this. I'm currently in high school and I'm starting to figure out to what unis I would want to apply to :D
There is usually a culmination of reasons as to why I subscribe to a channel, though, simply put, I guess I like an idea they bring forth. I don't even necessarily like the person from the start, however, by the end I tend to warm up to them; like you.
Consistency of uploads!
Interesting/Entertaining
Oxford graduate :)
Well, a lot of factors contribute, but I usually subscribe only after watching a couple of videos (sometimes just one). Firstly, it's interesting contents, then the personality of the person making videos, and of course video quality and editing is important.
I subscribed because your a Uni student (or were lol), and I am one so I can relate to a few videos you make :)
I subscribe to people when I feel like things that they discuss will be of benefit to me in some time in the future and when they discuss things that I am interested in.
I subscribed because initially I was looking at doing archaeology at Oxford, now
I'm in Durham but I still enjoy the videos as I feel it's useful foranyone in a science type subject to have a rounded knowledge. Also I like seeing what you're up too in Exeter. Your videos inspired my own duvlog series (a: thanks for the mention, really appreciate it! b: technology is preventing me from making more, that and a few issues with mental health, which I think would be good
To address at some point. Do you think that's a food
Idea? ) also a quick question, do you
Find that your attitude to extra curricular activities has changed since the move to
exeter? Is there a big difference in the way they are approached at the two universities? ( just a point of interest, it seems this is a unique opportunity to learn about other uni's so any questions about Durham please ask away! :) )
Cheers!
it used to be that I was looking for specific types of videos, which is sometimes still the case. But more recently I've looked for specialty channels which cover a variety of different and fascinating subjects (be it opinions, perspectives, or docs)
i think your videos are very interesting. therefore it is ok for them to be too long. actually the longer they are the better for me. not every undergraduate or postgraduate student studies in top class universities in developed countries having every facility. so your videos are very beneficial in many ways you are not aware of. i subscribe to channels from which i can learn new things
I am subscribed to a variety of different channels. I suppose the content has to be interesting to me, or something I feel is worth listening to that I can apply to my own life somehow.
Other times I subscribe purely because of the UA-camr, they might be funny or just super engaging in general.
Hahaha back when 7 mins is too long, now we all want longer videos 👌✨
Cool I didn't even know about that and I live in Vienna...
If i really like a video i will subscribe even withought seeing the chanel bcoz i think if they made one this good they'll defintely make another in the future and it'll show up in my what to watch list
Entertainment and information man.
I subscribe to videos because they offer different views on different things, and make me think about things I never would have thought about
I usually subscribe after watching a few videos on a channel and liking all of them
I subscribe to channels because they offer information I'm interested in or other times just because the person making the videos is interesting.
A lot of the time i subscribe because I like the UA-camr, the content ist less important. Then I usually just watch whatever video I'm interested in from the channel, and sometimes some of the others as well to see if it maybe is interesting after all.
Im nosey.... and If I like the person Im watching, Im interested in the stuff they do! :) You made the cut! haha
I subscribe for either the theme of the channel or if I find the person who runs the channel interesting.
Most of the channels I sub to our individual people's channels, not group channels. What influences my decision is a combo of the content the person makes (it must be entertaining or funny) and the persons attitude/personality.
Hi Simon,
I'm looking for some advice. I'm planning to do an EPQ in history, however, I'm ever so stuck on which topic to delve into and research! Do you have any topics/questions/statements that is particularly interesting? Thank you!
What kind of history do you find interesting? Medieval? Ancient? Early modern? Maybe something more thematic, e.g. the role of religion in Roman society over time, or the development of medicine in Europe? Really depends on your interests!
I'm particularly interested in early modern!
Maybe consider some themes or ideas that you would be interested in examining, and look at them in the early modern time period? The actual process of choosing a title and focus makes for great discussion in the EPQ process, so this is good! Ultimately it's a very personal decision, so just go with whatever you find interesting and see where it takes you :)
I subscribe to channels that inspire me.
I subscribe if I think I'll want to watch more videos the channel puts out. That can be for any combination of the reasons you listed.
What did you get in your degree?
My favourite youtubers are always slightly educational or intelligent
the persons ability to present a video well, and of course if im interested in the type of content the user posts
started with a cambridge union society debate where stephen fry was a speaker - UA-cam linked JamoeMills then to your site - then I think onwards to ScumSunshine which uploads University Challenge episodes (uber-yay)
y subscribe? coz the channels be interesting, sincere and funny-as-heck yo
personally I subscirbe because of the people on the channel, coupled with the content that they upload
I only subscribed for your faaaaaaaaaaace.
i subrcibe because of the content thats all.
And i totally misspelled "without"
Ill pretty much subscribe to any channel that benifits me, whether it be in an enterntainment aspect, educational purposes, or anything that can be viewed as worth watching
I subscribe when I find a channel that's videos are interesting and entertaining enough that I would want to watch any video of a similar standard, as someone else has said this may be after only watching a few videos. The presenter plays a big part in this as if I find I don't seem to like their personality, I will unsubscribe.
Love your videos by the way Simon.
I subscribe if the channel features themes that interest me, or themes i'd been searching for.
How that person affects my life in the long run, be it motivation or entertainment
The person
You are too cute.
