2023 World Giraffe Day

Of all the animals at Rollings Hills Zoo, our giraffes really stand out! Let's celebrate World Giraffe Day, today June 21st, the "longest" day of the year for the tallest animals on earth, with our residents, Billie, Zuri and Korey! 🦒🦒🦒
Giraffe populations are declining in the wild. According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), this species is considered Vulnerable due to habitat loss and deforestation, but it is also threatened by civil unrest and disease in its natural habitat. Many are also killed by poachers or trophy hunters for their pelts, bones, hair, and tails.
Being the tallest land animals alive, a full-grown giraffe has legs taller than the height of most humans. Giraffes also have uniquely long tongues, with the average being around 20 inches!
