It always surprises me how lots of people don't quite pick up on Tommy's personality change caused by his head injury. It's likely why he and Maria split apart.

That plus he went to Seattle because Ellie was so stubborn and insistent on going. He loses Jesse, he loses his eye, along with several other health issues, Maria and him split. Then Ellie promised they would go back for Abby and she bails on him after all he did for her. Unpopular opinion but I don’t blame him for being pissed.

I wonder how he survived, even if it was just the eye (for an eye - Manny).... A two month trip away from Jackson, no surgeons or hospitals in sight... Traveling with a dead body and two beat up girls.

That and mixed with how he is so bent on revenge and can't let Abby and the past go. I think that also plays a huge factor in Tommy's and Maria's relationship and the fact that Tommy even went to Seattle for a long time, making Maria worry.

Not only the head injury but also because of the leg injury and Jesse. The head injury, yes because it damages his eyesight which is insanely crucial for a Sniper like him. But there's also Jesse, he feels responsible for Jesse because of how close he had grown attached to him. To know he couldn't protect him must have felt heavy on his heart.
But the leg injury is also very crucial. To Tommy, it means it takes away his role completely in the community, a community he worked so hard to grow and prosper and now he can't even patrol and protect it. Dude feels like he now can't protect his wife or his community and it drives him crazy and probably very hostile against people and especially Maria which promptly drives a wedge between them that it becomes too much hostility for Maria to bear that, that she divorces his ass.
