  • Yep, I was hacked by a Kobbler. Purchased this Ranger from a local Ham. Advertised as a 9, plug & go condition. Well, as you can see this is not the case. Another victim of poor craftsmanship. Many indications of tinkering. Adding audio mods, that the Johnson engineers never thought of. Yes, I was disappointed, however realize that these old radios are 60 years old. Many have dabbled, tweeked, added their magic! So, no real surprise. I do not plan to contact the previous owner with my findings, that would just generate bad feelings. Lucky for me, this was a great experience and opportunity to present for you! I will not make a dime on this transmitter, However lesson learned again, Dont judge a book by its cover! Haha, TD Note: The Kobbler was under the influence of a bottle at the end. It had nothing to do with me. I am an innocent bystander. Of course, it was fun to watch!

Great video. I put one of these together in 1964, and the only mistake I made, was I hooked a filament lead to the wrong side of one of the dial lights. Wire blistered a little, but was able to catch it, make the change, and the transmitter was beautiful. I never got a chance to put it on the air, I left to serve in the Navy during Vietnam. While in Country, my mother gave it away. That has bothered me all my life.

HOLY $#!%!! The Kobbler has Really outdone himself this time! No wonder he was dancing that jig at the opening of this vid! Still, you were able to sort and straighten out all the mis-wiring, cobbling, hacking, bodging, etc. and come up with a working radio - testament to your skill! And, bad as it was, it made for some exciting viewing. KUDOS, Mr. Terry! You've done it yet again! I am in awe...

I can appreciate your pain as I am trying to put a Viking II together from the 5 I was given and each one was hacked more than the other. Do it right once not wrong 2,3,4... times. But no greater feeling than to hear them tubes sing! Great video!

Great repair job. I have run into the different size coupling problem on a few rigs. I found that I could carefully use a drill press to "ream out" the smaller hole to the larger size without any problem. I also run a tap through the set screw hole to remove any burrs.

Hi Terry....I'm about to go over an NC-303 that's been sitting for a number of years, and it appears to be complete except for the vernier tuning assembly. Any chance you know where I might find one...? The radio tuned fine without it before it went into storage, but re-installing a vernier assembly would make it complete....If you know of one, please let me know....Thanks again....! Jordan....

Just a quick question Terry..... What do you think of instead of messing around with those capacitor extensions in the VFO cage why not just remove them and use a non-ferrous tuning stick to get to them? I mean in reality, how often do you have to get in there in adjust those caps? Just dispense with the extension rods and just put a couple plastic caps to keep the dust out of the cage and call it good?
    Your thoughts?

Hacks aside, that was a beautiful Ranger II to work on. Was it originally a kit or factory wired?

So I was watching a vid of yours the other day and I couldn't (at first) believe what you did. You threw Shortwave Girl under the bus! I'm thinking... "oh man, this is a tough guy. I'm never messing with him". I'm referencing the Heath Comanche twin vids. "Emmy made me buy it!" Sound familiar Terry? Then I realized.. it's all a front.. a grand unified front - who's sole purpose was to bamboozle the real boss: Wifey. A ham does what a ham does - and one must not judge him until one knows the deep truth. Uh - truth to power? WTF does that mean? Anyways, 73 OM

No rubber grommets where the cob job wires go though holes in the chassis, either. The video has a dislike, so i guess the offending cobbler must have recognized his handiwork....

The Ranger II was pretty on the outside, but a disaster on the inside. The cobbler was probably an old frustrated drunk, who used this poor unfortunate rig for his guinea pig experiments. Why he didn't put it on AM with 170 volts dc applied to the mic, is anyone's guess.
