  • Welcome to episode #26 of our Franchise Mode series with the Vancouver Canucks on NHL 24! After a big bounce-back season, we enter the year #7 postseason as favourites to go on a run. To make it all the way, we'll have to have some Swede dreams! Leave a comment with any and all of your suggestions and I'll do my best to incorporate them into the next episode! :)
    Canucks Google Sheet: docs.google.com/spreadsheets/...
    The Vancouver Canucks are a franchise that have been through decades of misfortune, mismanagement, and, really, just pure disappointment. With nothing to show but three Stanley Cup Final losses in their 50+ years in the NHL, the Canucks are on the brink of returning to an all-time low as they have only made the postseason twice in the last decade, have one of the shallowest prospect pools in the league, and are easily in one of the worst salary cap situations. With no where else to turn, Canucks ownership has made a call to GM Data and his team of Assistant GMs to do the impossible: fix the unfixable team.

    This kind of video is why we watch the series. Completely unexpected results and the occasional EA Voodoo
    Glad to see that our young talent are capable of deep runs into the playoffs. Looking forward to the draft, i think you should just trade down and acquire multiple picks for next year

      Love it, Joe! Not the voodoo haha but you're spot on. At least your Avs got a SCF. Hopefully this young core can go even further next year. And this draft will be an interesting one as there are a good number of round 2/3 guys who catch my eye so trading down may end up making sense. See you there! :)

    Tough way to go out, but like in our regular season, it’s hard to be disappointed. We exceeded our expectations and surprised a lot of people, including ourselves. Let’s keep taking steps in the right direction and make this team a powerhouse.
    CONTRACTS
    Extend Playoff Pod and Couturier now. They both have team-friendly asking prices and getting them at ~85% would be a slam dunk. Hopefully O’Brien’s playoff performance was enough to give his trade value a little boost. He’s an RFA so there’s no need to force a trade right away if we don’t need to. Tender & trade or sign & trade are always options for us. The remaining expiring depth can be addressed after July 1.
    DRAFT
    Hello darkness, my old friend. We’re once again faced with the ever so tempting NHL Ready- Med Top 6F (or Top 4D)… O’Brien, Niskala, Brown, Goldmann, Quint in Vancouver. Braydon Dimaio in Pittsburgh. Alexander Kozlov in Seattle. The list goes on, these guys just refuse to grow in overall. Sydor and Tyupkin look nice on paper, but history is not on their side. We would consider ourselves lucky if they reach 83 overall. That doesn’t necessarily mean that there is no place in the lineup for them, though. As we’ve learned with Owen Beck in SFS, there is value in being a fixture in the bottom 6. It’s fine if we take one (or both), but we have to do it with the understanding that it’s likely a high-floor low-ceiling play. If we’re looking for more, trade down for Beaufait or trade out completely. If we’re going to be wrong on a prospect, at least we can say we took a shot on the Low Elite potential rather than of falling in the same trap year over year.
    It’s been a great series so far! Let’s keep building on the great foundation this off-season. Keep up the good work, bello.
    GO CANUCKS!

      @Data782  2 місяці тому

      Hey Dan! Thanks for your thoughts :)
      Podkolzin and Couturier definitely earned themselves another contract, with Couturier being a welcome surprise if he wants to stay on as 4C. No rush on O'Brien like you said as an RFA but he'll be taken care of before mid-July for sure.
      For the draft, oh boy.. Those "NHL Ready" 2nd rounders 😭 You're right that there's nothing necessarily wrong with taking those players, but we've gotten to a point where doing so HAS to be with a 100% understanding that they'll always be high floor/low ceiling as you mentioned. Very good insight so thank you for leaving that. It's hard to resist the temptation but we must begin to learn to!
      Much love to you bello and see you in the offseason as we continue to grow!

    Spoilers
    Man another wild postseason, was not expecting the scoring to be the problem but that’s the sim for you I guess. Had some good storylines though, postseason podkolzin is a different beast and love to see akira having a great first two series keeping us alive! The penalties were ridiculous and that series winning goal was absolutely brutal. Hopefully fixed in NHL25 but we know what to expect 😂
    It feels pretty crappy to lose in the wcf right now but as you said, if you told us at the start of the season we nearly made the finals we would be pleasantly surprised. We didn’t even know we would make the playoffs this season so let’s stay the course, see more growth from the youngsters and hopefully take that extra step next season to win it all.
    For the offseason definitely resign the playoff monsters podkolzin and couturier, and norris should be let go. I don’t think we’re looking at any big signings considering the major moves we made last offseason, some depth scoring but the holes in the lineup should hopefully be filled out by growth among our youngsters. At the draft we should definitely make some noise - I don’t think the high elite goalie or the med elite swede are the targets although it would be a cool storyline. Maybe you trade down a bit for Sydor, retain some draft picks and use those picks plus O’Brien to snag Tyupkin? Also make sure to grab Girardi, a med top 4 ofd, around pick 86, and the rest of the med and low elites will be good for the system. I believe in this squad! I think we have all the tools to get it done. Great video data and see you in the offseason.

    • @Data782
      @Data782  2 місяці тому

      Thanks for enjoying the ride, Gaben! Podkolzin truly is a different beast in the postseason and Schmid had some huge games for us in there. NHL 25 may be a little too hopeful so we'll cross our fingers for 29 or so 😂
      Yes! A big step forward from last year and this postseason should serve as great experience for our young core who will want to go deeper next season. Speaking of next season, Couturier earned himself another contract for depth but Norris will definitely be released to FA. And you're exactly right about not needing to have any big targets as our guys should continue to grow. And roger that on the draft suggestions! Thanks for your thoughts and looking forward to seeing you at the draft! :)

  • @lachtanwastaken

    After missing post season last year making it up to conference final is huge success. Considering we have three young players in top 6. Lundqvist continued to score more goals in post season, which is incredible in his young age. Since Henrik was King of the New York. Can we make Frederik the Prince of Vancouver ?
    Norris did okay in Vancouver, those penalty minutes in post season were brutal, but he wasn't keeper. We need some replacement LW in that top 6. Raty didn't convince me so I would keep him in that 3rd line as LW
    O'Brien is done. He is going to be 3rd/4th liner at max. And I think he is done in Vancouver. I would trade him for next year's pick, since this year there aren't many great players in 3rd-6th round.
    As for the draft don't be tempted by that goalie in first round. He is medium elite, but 4 years from NHL, you can find those goalies in later rounds. So trading up for him is really not worth
    We have late first round pick and early second. Which is great so I would trade down with both picks and take those NHL ready players. Sydor has most A stats, only one B but Tyupkin has all A and some A+. He could be around that 80 range. I think it's the best move you can make with those two picks
    As Ranger fan I would love to see Akira Schmidt to go 😂. But his stats were great, both in season and post season. So that leaves Leonov odd man out. It's unfortunate but great FA signing we are going to use for draft/prospect capital.
    Podkolzin needs to stay. Couturier is going to go down with his rating in off season. But his defensive stats should be still great so I would still sign him to be great veteran presence
    The rest is up to you
    Lundqvist - Petterson - Lekkerimaki
    2LW - Markstrom - Tippet
    Raty - Goldmann - Niskala??
    4LW - Couturier - Podkolzin
    Defense and goaltending should stay as it was
    Go Canucs Go

    • @Data782
      @Data782  2 місяці тому

      All things considered, yes, absolutely - this run was a success! And I wouldn't mind giving Frederik that crown someday 👀
      O'Brien is done but I think Raty can get back to his old 50+ point self at LW2! We had to bury him a little this season but I don't want to permanently say he's an L3 guy just yet. Signing a good middle 6 guy who can move up or down depending on how Raty does might be the move.
      Noted on the draft thoughts! For the goalies, I don't want to trade Leonov yet in case Schmid was just a voodoo wonder, but moving one of our extra guys sometime soon will be likely. For the lineup itself, like I said I think I'd want to keep Raty LW2 and you'd think Podkolzin needs to see RW3 after this postseason but, aside from that, it'd still leave us needing to fill a couple of bottom 6 spots. Could Niskala be one of them? We'll see. Thanks for adding your thoughts and we'll see you at the draft! :)

    Incredibly rough on the penalties. Stupid, dumb, penalties. Good ol' ea slash/hook.
    I think if game 4 vs the Avs went the other way.... Incredibly different results. If we didng collapse that game, I believe we would've made it into another cup finals.
    I was very impressed with Lundqvist. Great goal storing ability, for sure.
    Podkolzin.... what a trooper. Always performs well in the playoffs. 100% a keep, and dare I say, a potential Data Hall of Famer..?
    I think this team needs another true goal scorer. I know Tippet is listed as a sniper, and 28 (cant remember exactly) goals is nothinf to scoff at, but I believe we need another actual sniper player, capable of 40 goals. Lundqvist is one, Pettersson can do it too (even tho he's listed as twf), so I do believe another true goal scorer would be beneficial. Maybe even another true playmaker as well?
    Schmid was impressive. Unfortunate Jones kind of fell off a bit, but I believe he can bounce back up.
    Lastly, draft well. I think some defensive prospects would be ideal, and maybe a goalie as well.
    Great video Data, look forward to the next one!

      Incredibly rough indeed. So close to that rematch with the Bruins!! Sigh. But life goes on and we have a squad that can run it back next year. And yes, Podkolzin is certainly on that DHOF nominee trajectory!! 👀👀
      Hmm interesting idea to get another true goal scorer.. Lekkerimaki did score 40 this year giving us two 40+ goal scorers so I think we have the firepower in the top 6, but I see the argument for trying to get someone who can do damage in a L3 role or possibly even on L2 if Raty were to get bumped down again. We'll see what FA brings! And more defense at the draft sounds like a plan to me. Thanks for the love and see you in the offseason! :)

    I'm quite pleased with where we got in the end. Our offense could have done more to get us through but it is what it is. There are still a lot of positive things to take away from this.
    Once again, goalie voodoo did it's thing... Cossa was bad for us with the 'fleet and, now, he's stopping everything. Meanwhile, Jones who was a star in the playoffs last year couldn't even goal for an ECHL team with those playoffs stats this year.
    I also agree with you that the discrepency in penalties is somewhat ridiculous. And what about that Hughes play at the end... This game is so broken...
    I'd probably look at throwing extra icetime to our kids by putting Lundqvist, Markstrom and Lekky on the 1st line. Raty, Pettersson and Tippett could be line 2. ???, Goldman and Podkolzin could be line 3. Neighbors, Couturier, ??? for line 4.
    To fill the missing spots, if we don't have prospects ready to step up, I could see Holloway to step on line 3, which is his current role but he'd probably be asking for too much $. Same for McGroarty (although I'd probably put him on line 2 and drop Raty to line 3 if we'd be signing him). Maybe we go with Nudge on a 1 year contract? Or do we bring back Hoglander and add more Swedes?
    As for the draft, Sydor looks like a steal with our 1st pick. A- or better apart from physical, I'm down for that, lets get him! Typkin is also a must get; would O'Brien have enough value to trade for an early 2nd round pick so we can get him? If so, I'd do it. Maybe Acker at 87? Alexandrov at 110 is probably also a must draft. Sawyer at 123. Arcobello is a medium elite but a grinder so not as interesting. Carlsson at 174, Chipchura at 149 (although that name is still giving me PTSD). Draft looks to be forward heavy so Alexandrov and Carlsson are 2 very interesting dmen.
    We have a very solid core going forward and next season should be another very good one. We only need to straighten our bottom 6 and we should be set. Fingers crossed that the damn EA voodoo stops going against us.
    Go 'Nucks!

    • @Data782
      @Data782  2 місяці тому

      Yes, lots of positives! Just not the goalie/penalty/Hughes voodoo :)))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))
      Agreed on that framework for the lines! Especially the top 6. It'll just come down to EP40 or Markstrom at 1C. For the L3 wing spot which will be open unless someone in our system gets promoted, all of your suggestions sound good in theory so it'll come down to how the FA market looks/what the demands are. And all of those prospects will be noted! Thanks for taking the time and we'll see you at the draft :)

    SPOILERS BELOW
    What a Game 1 (5-4 W) to kick off the post-season. Nothing like a multi-goal game to get the adrenaline pumping! Yes it was close but I'd be putting Jones back in. After all, this is the playoffs. A win is a win is a win. We need 16 and notched the 1st. Let's run with it. And Game 2 (7-3 L), although not the result we were looking for. Clearly the O'Brien-line weren't their best. I agreed that Game 3 (6-0 W) was the time to start Schmid. I don't think I sat one time during that 3rd period. We walk into L.A. with our heads held high and walk out with ear-to-ear smiles on our faces back to the hotel. It's good to celebrate but let's remember routine. Eat well, rest well, train well, play well. But in Game 4 (4-1 L) it was our discipline that got the better of us paired with the power of the Kings special teams. Series is tied but we're going back to Vancouver. Let's show our fans what we're made of! We squeeze out the win for Game 5 (4-3 W) because of Lundqvist. This guy has been our MVP so far, in my opinion. Let's close this out in L.A.! WOW. I did not foresee a Schmid 29-save Shutty in the Kings' first elimination game. I figured a close game but I thought Kings would've had more fight in them. OFF TO ROUND TWO.
    Lundqvist may not have the most points but he's got as many as goals as we have wins and that's awesome to see. Let's carry this into Round 2 where we'll be facing... The Oilers. We're 2-0 against them in post-season series.
    And Round 2 Game 1 gives us our first OT game. And Engvall returns to haunt me in my dreams. 2-1 OTL. I slept in my office the last two nights. Let's get to Game 2. Oh boy, back to OT. I'll turn on the heat in my office...BANG. ELIAS PETTERSSON SCORES TO TIE THE SERIES. 3-2 W. Off to Edmonton. 1-0 Edmonton. 1-0 Edmonton. 1-0 Edmonton. We HAVE to work on 1st-period scoring. That's a new drill effective immediately. Oh that Game 3 was a refreshing 3-2 comeback win without going past regulation. That was an exciting one. Game 4. Tied 1-1 into the 3rd. Lundqvist scores!!!! ... Engvall returns, tie game... but Bouchard connects on the PP! And RNH ties... OT once again. These Oilers are playing physical so we should see a penalty AND THERE IT IS. OK guys let's connect on this opportunity to take a 3-1 stranglehold on the series. Show me shots on net. Show me offensive-zone pressure. Show me getting close to the net. BANG. Tippett from the out near the blue line! Top cheddar! Canucks win! Canucks win! We'll see you IN Vancouver for GAME 5! Four minutes and 22 seconds into the 3rd period LUNDQVIST scores his 6th! Our arena hasn't been this loud since our Game 5 SCF W with Little Timmy in his Ristolainen jersey.
    And we're off to Colorado! My-Oh-My after that 5-2 L I'm thinking this is gonna be a quick series. But then we get our own 5-2 W. We're coming back to Vancouver with the series tied. Big 1st period as it's tied 2-2. And look who came by! It's Little Timmy and his dad. He's rocking a sweet, brand-new #60 Fredrik Lundqvist jersey. I asked about the Ristolainen jersey; says it's framed on the wall in his room. We're presenting Little Timmy with a pair of season tickets. And what a night it was! 4-3 W. Canucks go up 2-1 in the series. We'll see you, and Little Timmy, in 48 hours for Game 4. Tough, tough 4-3 L. I invited Little Timmy out to Game 5 but his father urges it's a school-night. And the 3-1 L, maybe it's best he wasn't there to see a great 1st and then our players just sat for 40 minutes.
    GAME SIX. Canucks's first elimination game this year. I'm here, you're here, Little Timmy and his dad are here. Let's go Canucks! ...and it's 3-1 COL after 20... Tippett brings us within 1 after 40. 3rd period, here we go. PODKOLZIN TIES THE GAME!!! Off to OT. Not a single fan is sitting. It's a 20-minute period but not a single seat is full. Did you hear Little Timmy screaming for Lekkerimäki to shoot on his rush in OT? He was even more vocal when Lekkerimäki passed it to Markström instead. And EA voodoo strikes again. EA will never fix their game because they know whatever they release will make their salaries anyway. Little Timmy has began an EA NHL-video game recycling program at his school. Each person is to hand-in their chosen EA NHL game in a sealed package with EA's offices postal address on the front.
    Well that was a fun playoff run, I think. Aside from the EA voodoo I had a ton of fun watching and Little Timmy says he did too and looks forward to next year when he gets to visit every home game with his new set of season tickets.
    And Pettersson is just 178 points away from breaking Henrik Sedin's Canucks points-record with still 5 full seasons difference between them; H. Sedin went 17, Pettersson just finished his 12th / Pettersson is also 43 goals away from tying Henrik Sedin's Canucks goal-record while Hughes is 214 assists away from Henrik Sedin's Canucks assists-record. Here's to being bigger and better next year.
    AND FREDRIK LUNDQVIST WITH TWO 2029 SEASON RECORDS FOR GOALS (43) AND POINTS (72) BY A ROOKIE!!! Wonderful stuff. And I'll post the prospects for you to check in the Discord server!
    MightyJoeMaple signing off.
