I want to thank you for this youtube university course that has given me the confidence to turn my sg into a rocketship! Also, the eerie background music is great... I feel like ancient secrets from a hidden past are being revealed as the tone comes to life. 😂
I appreciate this video. I am confused about the set up for the neck relief becuase I have seen 3 different recommendations for SGs. 1) Capo at first and depress last fret (as you do) 2) Capo at first and depres at 12th 3) Capo at first and depress at 17
Great series! I've always been nervous of messing up and breaking something. These videos helped me out a ton. Got a really cool looking off brand pawn shop guitar, but played like crap. I got it set up and it plays 10 times better.
Thanks for putting this series together. It's very helpful. Could you explain more about how the neck changes shape when the truss rod is adjusted, and how to determine which way to turn it? Thanks.
Zakky you can use an actual guitar string. If you use 10 gauge strings and cut the high E string a few inches from the ball at the end it will make a perfect 0.010 inch feeler gauge
@@IanJCole thanks. I am a beginner so I wanted a little bit lighter strings so I can learn vibratos and bends a bit easier before returning if I felt like it down the road. Appreciate the respojse
Love the video's, they have helped me a LOT, Only thing is the background music is kind of off putting when I am trying to concentrate on what you are saying.
No point setting the neck with the guitar lying on its back, with the weight of the body on the neck, people play the guitar on it's side, it's sensible to check the neck with the guitar in a playing position on your lap.
My nephew just got a epiphone SG from reverb. Its new but I took it out and had a look and it has a tiny bit of neck twist. I know you cant say for sure without it being in front of your face, but is this a return level issue, or will a first set up usually fix a small twist?
Sorry to be a pain, but it seemed like a good video but I couldn't watch it as the music was distracting me from what you were saying. Not to be nasty just a though! Thanks :-)
Ian, I just found your channel and was really interested in your content.. BUT the weird, creepy music sent me off. just thought you'd be interested. regards.
Ian J Cole i do know that. The guitar adjustment is still different. I know how to do this i just forgot which way to turn it thats all i came for. So im good. But for noobs out there your title is bad. Gibson has a different style trust rod
@@austinbramer558 so do I and all the advice in these videos worked a treat. I bought a fret rule and used that instead at the 9th fret though for neck relief
Sorry to troll you as your a good fella with good intentions, however, if your lying the guitar down and your loosening strings, a lot of induced and altered tension is coming into the equation, I would have thought doing this without this would make a more accurate adjustment, but hey I might be wrong.
Thankyou for posting this. Will probably watch this prior to adjusting my sg, probably a few times a year. SO PLEASE DON'T DELETE THE VIDEO!
Very informative. Just got an SG Epiphone like yours---plan to continue to watch how to set it up. Great job, and Thank you!

Helpful videos, much thanks! And I like your Nurburgring t-shirt🤙🏼
Man this background music, feels like i'm 15 again playing Doom on the snes.
Glad you like it ;o)

Hi Alan yes I'll put together a video when I get a moment thanks for watching Ian
I have a little question, what can i do when i do not have any filler gauge?
go buy a set

@@VintageRadius ok. Thank you.
Loosen strings before adjusting the truss rod then tune up - repeat loosen & adjust as needed - - - why stress the truss rod ??
Thanks, but What's the purpose of the background music?
hi Pezz I don't use it anymore ;o)
Sorry for the ignorance, but what change does use a top quality bridge in a sg/ les paul rather than a average quality fixed bridge?
can anyone answer Stephens question? I have to say I'm not sure
Thanks for the video
thanks Neezduts
If I go from 10’a to 9’s on my Gibson sg, will I need to change neck and intonation?
Hi no you should be ok unless there is excessive bussing on the lower strings
@@IanJCole thanks. I am a beginner so I wanted a little bit lighter strings so I can learn vibratos and bends a bit easier before returning if I felt like it down the road. Appreciate the respojse
why have i heard the measures at 9th fret just asking that seems more center
The music in the background sounds a bit like Halloween music.
Yup!!
Love the video's, they have helped me a LOT, Only thing is the background music is kind of off putting when I am trying to concentrate on what you are saying.
Yeah man, it sounds like horror music. I don't get it. Should I be terrified of setting up the guitar? 😂

Hi Hyperslow yes I would return it for replacement or refund and no a setup won't fix a twisted neck cheers Ian
@@IanJCole thank you sir
The first thing to do is make sure the neck is straight and using a straight edge, NOT a ruler, is the safest method I think.
Why is horror music being played lol
its better than easy listening ;)
Adjusting a truss Rod is scary
Hahaha bro the music you have playing makes this so suspenseful
Sorry to be a pain, but it seemed like a good video but I couldn't watch it as the music was distracting me from what you were saying. Not to be nasty just a though! Thanks :-)
thanks Nathan I've changed the music now
@@IanJCole Go back to the scary music, please
whats up with the spooky ambience music? XD
Don't measure relief with the guitar on it's back like that, gravity introduces more relief. It should be measured in a playing position.
Music is freaking me out man
Embrace it Joseph ;o)
I came here fpr the music
in that case you'll find more here ianjcole.bandcamp.com/
It’s fucking weird. It sounds like someone left a PlayStation 2 on
@@nictrammell23 its actually a Playstation 3 with the left of us disk in but don't tell anyone :)
Jesus Loves You
The creepy music is awful.
thanks I take that as a compliment 😃
agree lol
I actually loved it
Haha, baby's too scared? Too bad, click off the video chicken 🗿🍷
Its kinda relaxing
I'm sorry but I dont get it !!
then you should take your guitar to a guitar expert
I’m already scared enough to try and set up my own guitar. The music isn’t helping 😂
What’s with this music it’s giving me a panic attack.
just sit back Kevin and let it wash over you
Music was distracting and horrible
thank you ;o)
Music is not creepy or awful but distracting!!! Please remove it so we can learn!!!
Ian, I just found your channel and was really interested in your content.. BUT the weird, creepy music sent me off. just thought you'd be interested. regards.
Change your title. This says gibson your guitar is epiphone
Hi not going to do that did you not know that Gibson make Epiphone Guitars

Not true, Gibson SGs and Epiphone SGs are hardly different at all when it comes to their structure and mechanism.
Aziz Yokubjonov Just shut it man. I literally have a Gibson SG. It’s different
