  • 486 Sqn was the first unit to receive Tempests, initially in January - February 1944.
The unit was changed back to fighter defence after D-Day and claimed 223½ V-1 flying bombs.

The Hawker Tempest is a British fighter aircraft primarily used by the Royal Air Force (RAF) in the Second World War.
It was an improved derivative of the Hawker Typhoon, intended to address the Typhoon's unexpected fall-off of performance at high altitude by replacing its wing with a thinner laminar flow design.
The Tempest emerged as one of the most powerful fighters of World War II and was the fastest single-engine propeller-driven aircraft of the war at low altitude

You can tell it's an early Tempest cause it has mk2 hispanos protruding from the wing instead of the mk5 which was flush fitting with the wings leading edge.

Sorry but you have that backwards this is a Mk5, the Mk 2 was powered by a Bristol Centaurus radial. Strangely enough the Mk 5 entered service first for a reason I'm not aware of. Probably the Bristol Engine wasn't ready in time.

486 (NZ) Sqdn was NEVER a Royal New Zealand Air Force squadron, it was an Article 15 Sqdn, under RAF control, based in UK.
Manned by many New Zealanders, it also had British pilots on-strength, and the ground-crew was almost entirely British.
