    I jumped on this video as soon as I saw it! Zorn is my jam recently and I also was thinking of making a video about this palette.

      Yes yes yes!! Please do!! :D
      Do you use watercolors? Gouache? Zorn's palette is really pretty with oils, it's not easy to translate to other mediums...

    • @SadieSavestheDay
      @SadieSavestheDay 6 років тому +1

      Eve Bolt - Bolt's Vault I use it in gouache, so I think it’s a bit easier to translate because of the opacity! I was really skeptical at first, but it was so easy to use. But I think you have to make sure to get the right black. Lamp black is normally nice and bluish!

    dont be afraid to use white. I know a LOT of people say the done use white, but i started swatching it for my mixing charts and now i see why its included in many sets. It does lighten and increase opacity BUT for pale, tint colors it gives them a smoothness that can be hard to get especially for high granulating colors. Now i added sennelier titanium white to any palette with 18 or more colors.

    • @EveBolt
      @EveBolt  6 років тому +1

      Interesting, Karia! I'll have to pay attention to that when I paint. I rarely use white so there's been very few opportunities...
      @Wokeness 93
      I had never heard it reduces lightfastness? PW6 is a lightfast pigment, as far as memory serve...

      Yes, I was taught to mix white or black to add tone or value? To lighten or darken a color.

    Beautiful little sketches! I love a limited palette as well. But I don't think I'd want to miss a cool blueish color. I think if I chose your red and yellow, I'd go for a payne's grey with a strong blue undertone. I might give it a try... I absolutely love that red, by the way. It is gorgeous! It is now on my wishlist...😀

    • @EveBolt

      Thank you so much! :)
      I could include a much bluer "black" when I do my follow-up on this video with the gouache, just to check how much of a difference that could do. I agree that the red is nice, it's so firetruck, bright red!! I don't often use cadmium colors so I had no idea there was a red that intense amongst them XD

      I used Paynes gray- just because I really loove it- and the result was great. Bud had to add white gouache, and still feel it as cheating...

    I favor a limited palette above all else. It's good to collect, but I usually work out of a small tin. Even the triple Qor set I compiled is now sitting on a shelf in favor of my small Altoids tin of 6 selected colors. I think working with 3 colors really expands your mixing knowledge and therefore truly a useful learning tool! Awesome vid. :)

    • @EveBolt
      @EveBolt  6 років тому +1

      I agree! And thank you! :)
      I have many bigger sets, but I never end up using more than 5 colors. The more colors I use, the less cohesive I find the finished image. It's also so much easier to use less colors XD

    • @MalamikArt
      @MalamikArt 6 років тому

      Exactly Eve! There's no truly perfect palette I guess, it all depends on the piece you're working on. It's good to have a wide rang to choose from though. I am slowly accumulating :)

    I LOVE limited palettes! This is great! One of my earliest videos was about a limited "master's palette," using Burnt Sienna, Yellow Ochre, and Prussian Blue, which are still my favorite colors to use. This Zorn palette really inspires me to try my hand at a new limited palette and seeing you work always motivates me to try something new! Thank you for this and your continued inspiration with all your work! Cheers always! :D

      Limited palettes are really awesome! And thank you for the kind words! :D I should try your limited master's palette, I'm curious about Burnt Sienna as a red. I just need to find one that is easy enough to rewet lol.

    Thanks for this video!
    For a cadmium free alternative I think either PR242 (Schmincke 341) or PR255 (Schmincke 365) might suitable. Both are bit brighter than Cadmium Red Light. PR242 seems a slightly more pinkish while PR255 looks a tiny bit more orange. PR242 is transparent, Cadmium Red and PR255 are not. Schmincke markets PR255 as metal free alternative to classic vermillion. I have this color and their transparent ocker, they make lovely mixes. I might try a limited palette like Zorn's, maybe PB60 would make an interesting alternative to black (I don't have any premixed neutrals in my palette).

    • @EveBolt
      @EveBolt  6 років тому

      Thank you for watching! :)
      I'll have to check if I have these colors or pigments in other brands. I didn't have much experience with cadmium paints before getting this one, but it might be fun to find transparent equivalents to the ochre and red colors, for a more "watercolor" feel. PB60 is a beautiful color, I'm pretty sure it would make for a great triad :)

    • @spinni81
      @spinni81 6 років тому

      Schmincke offers a transparent ochre (657, "Lasurocker") since last year , it is quite interesting for mixing but its tinting strength is not that great.

    • @emmahaslam1905
      @emmahaslam1905 5 місяців тому

      Maybe Holbein's vermillion hue or windsor and Newton's transparent orange might be nice in there.

    I always wondered if zorn could be pulled off with watercolors. It should be strong in skin tones. Wonder if it can be done by very diluted ochre mixes or you just need to use white for subsurface scattering effect. Store bought skin pans all have white in them.

  • @KarijnsWatercolors
    @KarijnsWatercolors 6 років тому +2

    That's a nice palette and it has a very good range of color mixes, I honestly did not expect that. Also, never heard about Zorn, so I am happy to have something new to research. Thank you for this video! :D

    • @EveBolt
      @EveBolt  6 років тому

      Hi!! Thanks for watching XD
      If you check out Zorn's stuff, his oil paintings featuring this palette are really awesome. It's also interesting to see the same colors but in oil, they really don't mix the same way. It almost makes me want to try oils. *Almost.*

    • @KarijnsWatercolors
      @KarijnsWatercolors 6 років тому

      I am convincing MalamikArt to do another Oil video where she needs to persuade the viewer to try oils. Because they really look like *a lot* of work. I think if you wanted to try a similar effect, you could try some cheap acrylics. I bought my set for the christmas ornament and have not used them since, but I could probably whip them out and see what happens. Ochre, red, white and black I think are staples in every palette, so I think I have them... I think.

  • @MeowMeowKapow

    I haven’t tried to paint with just these three colors before, but I really like their look together! Super limited color palettes are my favorite, because they tend to keep me on track. I’d love to see an experiment from you with including white as well! Even if it was just some gouache you already had rather than watercolor.
    I just got a Payne’s grey from Sennelier and was really surprised to see how....uh....colorful it was! You may like it! It has a bit of a purpleishness to it, as well as the expected blue.

    • @EveBolt
      @EveBolt  6 років тому

      I agree, I also really enjoy super limited palettes! It takes care of worrying about color cohesiveness XD
      I think I have that grey in their starter set? I'll have to check it out (it's an incredible value!!). I find it funny how not two Payne's greys are the same lol

    PY43 is a pretty warm yellow, PB60 is a slightly warm blue, I would not have thought anything green would come out of that. :-)

    • @EveBolt
      @EveBolt  6 років тому +1

      Yes!! Also, I'm very glad to hear that to you, PB60 is a warm color! I've seen it mentioned as a cool blue a few times and I'm confused by it all. I have Daniel Smith's Indanthrone blue and it always looked more reddish than yellowish to me... (even if it's quite a faint color tendency).

    • @StephenMarkTurner
      @StephenMarkTurner 6 років тому

      It is a bit dark and dull, and might look a bit cooler than the same hue brighter and / or lighter. I looked at some online swatches. For example, Schmincke makes two paints with it, one looks maybe ever so slightly cool, but I thought most swatches looked slightly warm. The 'handprint' paint wheel puts it with the cooler version of Ultramarine Violet.
