  • PRAIA D'EL REY on the Silver Coast of Portugal is the location of two of our favourite housesits.
    We had only been there in winter, so it was great to have the opportunity to see this beautiful golf resort in summer! We were there in June and July for 5 weeks, looking after 2 gorgeous huskies.
    It was a great opportunity to show viewers the huge contrast between the quiet winter months and the bustling summer months!
    In this video we show:
    Busy Praia d'el Rei beach
    Seafood restaurant
    Outside the mini market
    Excellent fruit and vegetable stall nearby

    What beautiful blue water. So glad you got to enjoy some down time in summer after a cold winter. Great prices for iceberg lettuces. They went up to $A12.00 each for a while but have come down now. Must remember that white wine. OooH the dogs must be hot. I've been watching a Chinese UA-cam on Dawang, a Giant Malamut. He is just beautiful and takles every opportunity to jump into water!.

      It was so lovely to see Praia d'el Rey iin summer, after 2 winter housesits there! The sea is still cold but the swimming pool was lovely and not freezing 🤣 Oh my word... A$12 for an iceberg lettuce!!!! I'd heard $16 for a kilo of tomatoes from family FB posts... what on earth is happening to vegetable prices? I would so be planting a mini garden! I really need to buy another bottle or two of that white wine as it was so delicious... and I'm pleased to hear that other people have enjoyed it as well!
      *I've just nipped into Continente and bought a bottle... looking forward to trying it tomorrow and to see if it tastes as good this time round!
      The huskies are actually from California and cope surprisingly well with the heat - Zeus even likes to go outside every afternoon and sunbathe for a while! Dawang sounds amazing, so cool! 🐶❤ ~ Mandy 😀😁

    Very nice video about Praia d' E Rey Hotel and resort. These beaches in portuguese west coast are beautiful, but the water is cold and some times, even in the summertime foggy and windy. Have a nice stay!
    By the way, I love this wine from Setubal region. :)

      We're so pleased to hear that you enjoyed the video, Miguel! It is certainly a lovely place to visit, whether it be in summer or winter. The water is definitely colder than the Algarve, but Lee still enjoys going for a swim and even went in on his birthday in March! We had some really misty grey days in June, but by the time we decided to make this video the weather had really improved and had become quite hot! I'm so happy that you like that wine! It'll be interesting to hear if anyone else is a fan! ~ Mandy 😀😁

    Hello gang,
    So good to finally meet my virtual Portugal mentors. Yes,the olives are quite good at the Alcobaca, “Praca da fruta “, I wanted to thank you again for all the sights and insights of Portugal that you provide. It’s so important to people that want to possibly make it their future home.

      It was so wonderful to meet you both in Alcobaça, Chad and Alice! Thank you for stopping to chat, and for the lovely feedback and compliments! I'm so pleased we saw you again inside the market, Chad, so keep an eye out for our Alcobaça video in the next month or so 😀! We went to the Nazaré market on Wednesday, and it turns out our favourite stall / best value stall there is run by the same people as the olive stall in Alcobaça, as she recognised us from Monday! 😁
      We are so happy that our videos proved really helpful to you when planning your move to Portugal. We appreciate you taking the time to comment as it will hopefully encourage the UA-cam algorithm to share our channel with new viewers. Wishing you all the best with your new life here 😀🇵🇹 ~ Mandy

      @@FrugalTravellers PRAIA D'EL REY is not Algarve as the water temperature and the sea are different. Algarve has the Mediterranean sea very close and PRAIA D'EL REY has the Full Atlantic. It's not advisable to swim at PRAIA D'EL REY as the currents used to be a bit rough.

    • @FrugalTravellers
      @FrugalTravellers  2 роки тому

      Hello joao. Yes, I know Praia d'el Rey is not the Algarve... it was a joke as it was so much busier than in February/March... and there were actually people sunbathing on the beach! 🤣 We spent 7 months in Portimão, and often went to the beautiful Praia da Rocha... absolutely stunning, even if the water was a bit colder than the Mediterranean. It was great to see the lifeguards at Praia d'el Rey, and to see so many people having a wonderful summer holiday.

      Hello Ladonna! Yes, that little fruit and veg shop is priceless for us during our housesits in PdR as we can easily buy enough freezer and pantry supplies for 3-4 weeks but not fresh vegetables, so we are regular customers there 😀😁
      It's amazing how many PdR residents don't know it's there... we'd passed the information on to a few people, which is why we made sure to include it in this video 👍😀

    Thank you for another awesome video. 👍🏻 1) Was curious about spraying for flies. When I lived in Italy, they sprayed (late night) for mosquitos. I suppose flies can also be annoying. 😅 2) The erosion in a few months is quite impressive. 😲 I can see why the hotels are built quite some distance from the shoreline. 3) Are there public showers on Praia d’el Rey? I’d suffer without them. 🥵 4) Don’t you love how even the cheapest wines in PT can be delightful? 🍷 5) That bottle opener looks too complicated for me. 😂 Well done Lee! Cheers. 👋🏻

      Hello lucchese20! Thank you for your awesome comment and questions!
      1. The flies were an absolute nightmare this year! Lee would kill 20 in one morning, we'd have screens on all the windows, but there'd be another 20 the next morning!
      2) Those cliffs are beautiful but quite unstable!
      3) I didn't notice any public showers at Praia d'el Rey,
      4) Portuguese wines are my favourite... price-wise they're exceptional, and I don't know how we'll be able to buy wine again once we leave this amazing country!
      5) That bottle opener caused us some issues when we first tried to use it... I need to include that clip in a Praia d'el Rey video as it seems so funny looking back on it now 😀😁 ~ Mandy

    A small word of advice: it's a bit dangerous walking barefoot on those wooden walkways because it can happen that some screws or nails become a bit protuberant with the years and the wear, or some splinters appear. In some beaches there's even a warning sign at the entrance of these walkways to not go barefoot.

    • @FrugalTravellers
      @FrugalTravellers  2 роки тому

      That's great advice, Artur. Thank you for sharing this information. I haven't seen any of the signs mentioned, but it makes sense to wear shoes on the wooden walkways. That sign at 6:50 marks the border of a "zona concessionada", which means something like a zone that was leased or granted to a private company to make their business in. They pay the local city hall for that space and in return they are the only ones entitled to make business there and have their own sunshade umbrellas (that are usually paid, or reserved for their guests). This means that a private citizen can only settle their sunshade umbrellas on the area where the sign is pointing to, and not on the other side, which is reserved to the said company. Some people don't respect it and open them on the company's area too but the company is entitled to ask them to close their sunshades. Probably they were not doing it on that day because the beach was fairly empty (good will). That restriction is only for sunshade umbrellas, if you don't have one you can stay wherever you want.

      Thank you for this useful information. We were not sure what the rules were. There seemed to be plenty of room elsewhere on the beach for everybody. It is a very nice place to go and enjoy the beautiful coast. 😍

      @@FrugalTravellers In Portugal there are no private beaches , by law all beaches are public except the zones for military training or natural reserves. The concession only gives a private entity the right to explore commercially a zone of the beach (a bar , restaurant , sunshade rental , etc) in exchange they have to provide the safety equipment and lifeguard personal. The main authority at the coast line is the Autoridade (Policia) Marítima (nor the PSP or GNR have jurisdiction but they often cooperate).
      Some fun facts , you cannot camp at a beach , you must have a licence to use a metal detector , pets are allowed outside the concession area from May to September and in all zones for the rest of the year (in doubt google dog friendly beaches).

      Thank you for taking the time to comment. We were told the next day that it was for flies, and we noticed a definite decrease after a few weeks of the vehicle driving round. It was just a bit disconcerting seeing it the first time, especially the guy on the back in a hazmat suit! ~ Mandy 😀😁
