Great vid. Alcobaça is a lovely town, with loads of things within walking distance of each other. Lidl is good for cheap shopping. Continente and Pingo Doce both sell hot takeaway food (Pingo has a bigger variety). Time it right (6.30pm or so) and you'll get a hot chicken, straight out the oven, for about €4.50. If you have a bit more of a budget, there's a posh hamburger place just off the monastery square called Meat. Also off the square are 2 amazing restaurants, called Pratu's and Antonio Padeiro. Both are highly recommended.
I'm surprised you didn't visit the amazing new (last couple of years) park (Parque Verde). Stunning, and there's a great café in there which is superb value. The staff are lovely too, and there are some very well kept toilets right next door. The terrace is dog friendly.

Thank you so much, Robert for your excellent and informative comment. We walked through Parque Verde en route to Decathlon and Pingo Doce... I just didn't video anything. We used the very clean toilets by the cafe AND I took photos of the great value menu, but didn't use them in any of the 3 Alcobaça videos.
We also checked out the great lunch special at Meat, but didn't get a photo! All the more reason for us to go back and video more 😁
I'm going to pin your comment, as it gives such great advice to other frugal travellers. Thank you so much for taking the time to share all of this! ~ Mandy

Thank you for sharing this wonderful stay. 💖

I think we need to add more about the pets in our videos, with the owners' permission of course, as we've had loads of really positive comments about this sit!

great video guys, I think we visited Alcobaca in 1998, I vaguely recall the monastery. Tennis club was a great find. I recently saw a vlog from one of the Azores Islands and a cafe at the local fire brigade had a similar meal deal. OMG Decathlon, my favorite sports store in Europe. I bought one of those little backpacks in Spain about 6 years ago for 2 euro, and it's still going strong. I love their giant towels as well, I seem to have quite a few of them from various trips. lol . Thanks so much for the video, those fur babies were so adorable, and the weather, fantastic. Lidl is great in Portugal, as has a lot of things not easily found elsewhere, like muesli and hummus. It was actually one of the more expensive supermarkets in Romania, so we tended to go to others there. That view from the balconies was absolutely stunning! Thanking for sharing the hidden gems and history of the monastery. The home owners were very generous and the cats and the dog are cute. I can relate to Mandy’s grocery shopping, I do sometimes buy more than I planned except I don’t have carry them up the hill. 😂 We will visit the restaurant behind the tennis club and the bar when we visit Alcobaça. The coffee Mandy and Lee had with the croissant for your birthday breakfast at 4:35 - what do you call it in Portuguese? Happy belated Birthday! 🎂 I like the brand of Mandy’s new bagpack. 😊

Hello Sue! Thank you so much for always writing such wonderful comments, they really make our day! We're so happy that you enjoyed this video about Alcobaça and the lovely pets we looked after. We had such a great time there, and it was so much nicer having Lee with me, even if it was just to help carry the groceries up that steep hill 😃
That was a very typical Portuguese milky coffee called a Galão. They come in a tall glass, are maybe ¾ milk, and cost between 75 cents to €2 depending on where you are. We don't tend to buy coffee out, apart from the bica/cafe that often come with a Menu do Dia, so to have a galão is always a treat for us 😁☕
Thank you so much for your congratulations! It would be brilliant if we reached 10,000 subscribers by the end of the year, but we'll be super excited whenever it happens. For us it's more important to keep making interesting and informative videos, and to build a frugal travel community! Wishing you all the best! 😃😁 ~ Mandy

We are going to be in Caldas da Rainha for the month of June, but may visit Alcobaça sooner as it looks fantastic and I would like to scout it out for our next home. I've made notes from this video and will absolutely being trying the wine. I'm a bit gobsmacked on that one. The best lunch deal I've had so far in my six weeks in Portugal is the Pingo Doce. I tried that based on your advice from one of your Portimão videos in Lagos. However, I'm starting to think the Alcobaça Clube de Ténis may have it beat. Like you, I'm finding the grocery prices to be very afordable at about 40-50% less than the US. There is no Lidl in my area, but I"m looking forward to trying them out. On a side note, I do enjoy the animal clips in the homes you are sitting. Thanks again for the great content.

Thank you so much, Todd. It is wonderful to hear from someone who is actively using our frugal travel tips, and we really hope you enjoy your meals at the Alcobaça Clube de Tenis as much as we did! Lidl has less options than supermarkets such as Pingo Doce and Continente, as tends to only have 1 or 2 brands for each product, but some of their products are excellent, such as their muesli and the Greek yogurt. Alcobaça is lovely but is out on a bit of a limb if you rely on public transport around the region. It will be interesting to hear your opinion. I still think the Caldas fruit and veg market is the best we've been to in Portugal... such excellent low prices! I'm so pleased you enjoy the clips of the gorgeous pets as they really make our stay in each place all the more special.
