  • How could a 44 year old Ford Courier be the best first overland vehicle when there are so many other choices out there? Well, that's dependent upon one thing, if you've already got it sitting in your driveway.

I love that old school brown color on the courier! The brown bomber! I hope this video blows up and shows everybody that you don’t need a fancy rig to overland! Just what you have in your driveway 😎

Thats why i like your channel no BS,. All my camping gear is from hand downs from my dad and family, garage sales, second hand stores and walmart, at the moment my only reliable vehicle is a awd rav4, ive taken it out, seems to lack ground clearence, so i lifted it and added some all terrain tires and thats basically it i am about to go from TJ to Cabos, exploring for remote beaches and surf. Ive had proper 4x4s in the past but i realized that to the mayority of places i visited there was always an old a 2wd sharing the same view, having the same experience and just enjoying life as same as me, so yeah just have common sense and go.

I own a 1978 courier. I picked it up in Seattle for dirt cheap and learned how to drive manual transmission on the way home.
Took an hour and a half, but i was smiling the whole way there. 6 months in the alternator, starter, and battery went out. Had it all replaced and two years later haven’t had a single issue (other then forgetting to put gas in it).
She ain’t fast, she ain’t pretty, but she gets me where i need to go without ANY problems. I’ve driven it from Tacoma to Bellingham without ever needing to stop countless times. It’s definitely a going to town rig, but she can haul.
One of my favorite things to do is put about 1,500 to 1,800 ponds of wood in the back and just watch the heads turn from people surprised it can go the speed limit with all of it in the bed.
There is still lots of work to be done, but it’s a blast whenever i get to work on it. At first i thought this video was putting couriers in a bad light, but i say through it and had an open mind. I’m happy i did. You’ve given me the push i needed to keep going, thank you for taking the time to film this!

This is a great PSA! I've been following the overland scene for several years prior to getting a more dedicated rig. And a lot of the channels that have big followers and always come up first seem to always be pushing product or a viewpoint on overlanding that just is not obtainable for most.
I got a Jeep Wrangler because I've always wanted one. Before I even bought it and watching those channels I wanted to put 37s on it and steel bumpers all around and winches. But the more I watched and dug into other channels, The more I saw people push the "Use what you've already got quote". There are people all over the world going on. Terrible on maintained dirt roads that are far worse than our fire roads in old Camrys and that's how they live. If they can do it on a day-to-day basis, we can do it when we want to. Have fun with what we got.

Wish these little trucks can be manufacture again. We need them. Gasoline prices are up to 5 and 6 dollars a gallon these days and these little girls gave more than excellent mileage and get they were good, tough trucks, very depeneable to. Yiu out to paint the underside of this little girl with black rust olem paint, and get some bodywork on it done and repaint the body and keep her running for yet many years to come. She's BEAUTIFUL.

I had a similar experience with a 1972 VW Microbus. And it was a camper version. So, I even had a rooftop tent.

Man, try to find a rooftop tent as standard equipment these days! Lol. I’ll bet that thing was a blast!

It's often said of Land Rovers that "Your first one will be your worst one".
You'll have the rose-tinted glasses firmly in place and you'll see the chunky tyres and bull-bars and spotlights and you won't be able to hand over the cash fast enough.
And then you'll learn all about oil leaks, rust, gearbox problems, rust, worn propshafts, rust, leaky seals, rust, worn wheel bearings... and rust.
the 10% of LR owners who don't immediately trade it in for a Toyota (which will be just as bad) will learn the lessons and the NEXT time they buy a Land Rover they'll know what to look for.
It's a similar thing with an overland vehicle IMO.
Basically, don't worry too much about your first one.
Just don't spend too much on it (right away) and don't ruin it by throwing heaps of aftermarket parts at it.
Throw your camping gear in it and spend a year enjoying it.
One of two things will happen; you'll either confirm that it's the right vehicle for you and then you CAN start spending money on it OR you'll become aware of all the faults and you'll be able to sell it without losing a lot of money and then you can replace it with a vehicle that DOES suit your requirements.
For me, a Disco 2 IS the ideal overlander.
It's mechanically simple, it easily copes with gravel and mud, it's got 2 seats, a sleeping platform and enough space for all our junk and a couple of dogs.
There's no point in me trying to tell people to buy a Disco 2, though, cos there's a hundred things somebody else might need/want (which I don't) that will make a Disco 2 a complete waste of money.

I had two 80 model Couriers as a teenager they were awesome! I’ve actually been looking for one recently but they are almost extinct and almost all are rust buckets.

Wish I had watched the whole video instead of the first 2 minutes. I just put 42 inch tires on 1 tons under my Courier, adorned it with Overland Flare™ and next-day aired myself a scottle. I totally missed the point! Next time I'll watch the whole thing.

My overlanding vehicle is a 1991 Mazda b2200, built on the same platform. Has the CHEAPEST chinese walmart street tires 100 HP to the CRANK 2wd, and a payload less than most Civic's now a days, but the clearance, lightweight durable platform has brought me well off road where 4WD cars would hesitate. Get past mud pits, have done shallow 2 and a half foot river crossings, rarely does it get stuck when i exercise the most minor bit of common sense. And the car was totaled recently but I rebuilt it on my driveway for under 500$, got it retitled, and its back on the road, noway in a million years would I ever pay the price people are asking for trucks nowadays, in the Bay area people are selling 20+ year old toyota tacoma's for more than MSRP with 200K miles! It's beyond insane out here. Things are finally calming down, but nothing like how it was even 4-5 years ago before the pandemic,...
