SNES Final Fantasy VI (III US) Gameplay - Part 033 - Kefka Kills Gestahl and Destroys the World

- Gestahl's attempts to put an end to the maniacal Kefka has proven to be futile. Kefka calls for the aid of the Triad to attack Gestahl, and sure enough he succeeds. At this point, all hell breaks loose. Kefka throws the fallen Emperor off of the continent and then arranges the Triad to his own will, disrupting the delicate balance between them. As the heroes watch hopelessly, Shadow jumps in to give them one last chance of escape. He traps Kefka between the statues to buy time. However, the actions that Kefka just did will forever change the face of the world...
About the Clip: Using ZSNES v1.51, I first recorded the gameplay as a ZMV. Then I dumped the video footage using ZSNES' movie dumping feature. The RAW dumps serve as an excellent way to get a pristine source, since all the color information remains intact. Next, I used various common video tools to edit the video for UA-cam, including: AVISynth, VirtualDub, BeSweet, Lagarith Lossless Codec, x264, Nero AAC and mkvtoolnix.

Imagine if they remade Final Fantasy VI as a two-part game, and if this were the ending scene of the first part.
I wholeheartedly believe this will happen if they remade this game like FF7R.

I love how FF6 is the one FF game where you pretty much lose before you win. The antagonist gets exactly what he wants.
I have always thought of World Of Ruin as a metaphor for depression - the world feels dark and gloomy, and the future feels hopeless.
Then when you find the Falcon it's like you are starting to recover from depression and start to feel hopeful again.
Isnt ffxv worse though?

I'll admit it, heinous as it was to trigger the apocalypse, I appreciate seeing Kefka make Gestahl squirm with the lightning bolts.
Makes Thanos collecting all the Infinity gems look like child's play.
Does it though? Thanos wiped out half of the population of the entire universe. Kefka did that on one planet.
@@Spiral81C1 Kefa could've done the same thing if he had wanted to. Also, Thanos lost the power of omnipotence once he used the stones to destroy said stones, whereas Kefka never gave up on his omnipotence, due to pure, unadulterated selfishness.

@scaIpeI You guys don't seem to remember that Kefka did this spur of the moment. Without Gestahl he wouldn't have even got it half way. Kefka didn't plan to betray him, none of it was planned. Just in the right place at the right time.
Then again, Kefka isn't exactly the planning type. That'd be too boring... x)
That last shot in the cutscene of the continent being ripped in half gets to me every time. One of the most terrifying cutscenes Ive ever seen in a game.
I'm ashamed to admit this....young me was super stressed at this part. I didn't wait for shadow. :(

I wish they showed us his backstory more. We only got a 5 second flashback.

While it's true about Kefka actually being better than Sephiroth, he isn't better than Mateus.
Emperor Mateus killed god & satan & became ruler of heaven & hell.
He killed many heroes as well.
Mateus is the OG successful villian.
VI was something else. It was one hell of a surprise for 1994. Remember the first time you heard the music swell in Celes opera scene? Yeah, I do too, very well. But nearly as much as watching that continent get torn apart. I thought I had screwed up and it was just a special game over screen. The trope of alternate endings weren't really a thing yet.

Shadow doesn't only come here to save you (as he values your party as friends now). He also wants to atone for his past, stopping his old friend Baram, now transformed into the monstrosity known as Kefka.

Baram is not Kefka though. They're two separate characters that have nothing to do with each other.
@@NeoShadowWolf they're the exact same person. In the GBA version ( can't remember if it was also in the SNES/SFC verson) it was hinted in Shadow's past that Baram hates the sight of blood and Kefka also hates the sight of blood.
@@soumienchiem That doesn't mean anything. Most people would be repulsed by the sight of blood (especially if it's their own and they'd fly into a state of panic).
Baram = Kefka is an old theory that never got definitive proof that they are one and the same person (in fact, Baram only has one eye while Kefka kept both of his). There are similar theories to Baram such as him being either Gogo or Siegfried. We also know little of Kefka's past other than that he was the first person to receive a magic infusion (which drove him insane) and that he had served the Gestahlian Empire for some time before he received said infusion.
Only thing definitive is that Clyde left Baram for dead, and Baram likely succumbed to his injuries. Since them, Clyde felt guilty for not putting his old friend out of his misery.
What kind of heartless creator made a world where moving a few statues would throw the world out of balance?

I don't think the three warring triad considered the possibility of someone being insane enough to defile their resting spot and unleash the magic onto the world.
Bowser and Antasma are just Barney, Thomas, and Friends compared to Kefka and Gestahl

@Pokeria1 I don't recall the actual WoB map being used for the end credits, just a greener looking world with generic terrain. I'm pretty sure it was just a sloppy representation of the world recovering. Kefka's death meant that the world won't have a magical influence anymore (as far as we know) since he drained the Triads, then died. Terra lost her Esper powers and all the Magicite disintegrated. So it's not exactly the same as before, but doesn't have that Pandora's Box for the time being.
I liked this Final Fantasy cuz you could control 4 characters, and that many skills, it was awesome!!! The Story, Characters, and the Psychosomatic, Attic *INSANE* Kefka!
Yeah, Kefka, Imo, has yet to have a rival Villan of his caliber. Sephiroth is 2nd, but he didnt do, with glee, any of his deeds, and laugh wickedly before, during, or after.

i always felt that cid dying was cannon since the following scene is more involved then the one you get when you save cid. i have a feeling they planned to just have cid die but they thought it was too dark so they wrote in a save cid scenario.
@@theimortal1974 Yeah I thought they'd confirmed that Cid dying was the 'canon' outcome here and that was the reason the game makes no effort to explain how the fish minigame works.

Kefka, ExDeath and Emperor Mateus are IMO the most powerful villains of the FF franchise. Kefka becomes a god and leaves an everlasting effect on the world. (When he dies, magic dissapears from the world). Mateus becomes the emperor of earth, heaven AND hell, and ExDeath is powerful enough to engulf the whole world into nothing (but he's stopped before managing to do so, of course)
Though not as powerful in his own right, per se, Xande from Final Fantasy 3 probably came the closest to actually destroying all of existence, and without even meaning to. He wanted to be immortal, so he threw the crystals out of balance, causing time to freeze on the surface world for a thousand years. Then, even after the player manages to restart time, it turns out that Xande's selfish actions inadvertently summoned the Cloud of Darkness, whose sole purpose is to return all of existence to nothingness. The Cloud of Darkness is so powerful that the player party can't even scratch it and it one-shots the player party. It takes the spirits of the Heroes of Darkness sacrificing themselves just to make it possible to do any damage to the Cloud of Darkness whatsoever.
In the case of ExDeath, you can add how insistant he was. When his tree form was defeated and became Neo-ExDeath, he knew he was defeated, but he still used the last of his strenght to take you down with him.

@@michaeljames6737 Because he DID become a god. The God of Magic to be precise, by absorbing the power of teh Warring Triad. And that's why killing Kefka makes magic (and Espers) disapear from the world

Homie I'd say this scenario qualifies as destroying the world; Splitting continents in half isn't exactly a one and done deal. Mountains were being destroyed, ground was cracking and swallowing cities and towns, magic practically rained down like nukes blasting everything in sight.

Oh Celes. She got slapped around the most in this game. By the clown and his posse (troops) nonetheless. Brave woman. haha. This game was indeed darker and edgier with the whole End of the World scene. This would f-ing epic in today's graphics, I so agree with the poster!

It's hard to appreciate the gravity of what is happening when the whole scene is being played out by characters that look like tinker toys.

I'd prefer this over some horribly voice acted/scored PS4 JRPG though. Modern RPGs (and modern games in general) may look nice at launch but they have a REALLY tough time nailing the tone/mood of the moment like the older text only games did because the simple graphics allow you to fill in the blanks with your imagination. Final Fantasy VI and many other 16/32 bit RPGs like it do a great job of using music to help tell their stories which you just don't see in modern games. Characters have unique themes and you hear variations of those themes throughout the games depending on the situations. A great example in this game is Kefka's memorable music and the way it is injected in to the final boss theme. Ted Woosley and the western team did a great job translating, the characters all speak like real people and not like actors in a Japanese soap opera, to me it actually makes it much easier to enjoy.

They should do a remake of this for PS4/5 with the same storyline, only with Final Fantasy XV graphics, gameplay style and with voice actors/actresses.

He threw multiple suns at Gaia multiple times. Whether the whole destruction of the Solar System was from another dimension or not is pretty debatable, but regardless, the world can't take that many suns to the face, let alone one. In fact, the very existence of said sun would pretty much destroy the planet before it even hits it. Or at the very least just burn everything on the outside.

Originally until they ruined FF7's ending with Advent Children, sephiroth's plan did end on an ambiguous note where you don't know if humanity was wiped from existence by holy.
