My Hurdy Gurdy journey begins! Excited to spend some time learning this great instrument. My goal is to learn a repertoire of songs I can play at renaissance faires and other appropriate locations. Might consider creating some original music as well! Hope you enjoy! -- Watch live at / lobosjr
Knowing how fast Lobos learns, he'll probably be doing a no-hit run of all bosses of the Souls trilogy using this Gurdy as a controller next week.

22:05 this is always the video I show people to demo a Hurdy Gurdy. It's insane how he makes it scream and sound like an electric guitar. Super cool!
I'm a bigger fan of "Cicatrice" from him or "Le château magique" but it's true they are more heavily altered, not showing what a hurdy gurdy "by itself" can do. (often minimizing as much as possible the buzzing effect too which is supposedly inherant to the instrument.)
He also makes use of a lot of effects and a looper. I usually show Matthias Loibner's Razvrastanata or Michalina Malisz's Kingdome Come Undone to showcase the real sound of the instrument. I love Guillaume Desq, though, he's the guy who really made me interested in the hurdy gurdy

I love how it kind of has the feel of a sound in "reverse" ... really conjures up vibes of mysticism and magic somehow.

Try a synthetic core viola (not steel core) string for a lower mellow sound, something like a Thomastik Dominant Viola G medium 👍

Yooo! Okay so these Altarwind instruments seem to have a reputation of being either hit or miss. What has your experience with it been so far? The price and style is attractive, but some folks have said they are literally unplayable and need loads of work. yours seems good!

I love hurdy gurdy's but ive heard its very easy to buy bad ones if you dont do your research. I hope you found yourself a reliable one! Imsure you did your research considering your musical background, but i just have my worries with the history i have heard of them being bought online.
Heya! You are right it's easy to buy a bad one. Unfortunately he didn't do his research, as appears to just have bought the first one that came up on google, and didn't read any reviews from the various communities on discord, reddit, and facebook.
The one in the video is an Altarwind, and though they aren't the worst - they are built pretty poorly overall. Many show up broken, and the sound quality is pretty bad. They are heavy and lack acoustic quality.
The model he bought is their best model, as it is simple. It's not great but it should work for learning. If he upgrades in the future I just hope he doesn't buy another from altarwind, and instead does some real research into the instrument.

Well, I only saw this in one of your vods from a recent stream - but I am very roughly around your age, and I too have a mother with dementia (yay to leaning fecal matter from a toilet seat or the wall near it, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc) and know 10000% what you have and are going through.
I say "stay strong" to you and me and everyone else who has to... well... put up with it. I love her, but still. Of course, she also subtly abused me mentally when I was a kid, so... lots of interesting feelings about her being something of a kid in an adult's body who doesn't even remember the pain and joys she provided.

Do you ever mess around with synthesizers?
I highly recommend the free Surge XT software synth! It even supports any alternative tuning and is open-source, there's also a GREAT free version of Vital.
Cool payed soft-synths include Harmor, Phaseplant and Serum, for example.
Also, could you put your hand on the drone string(s) to create bass movement? Maybe some markers to indicate intervals.

They really aren't. They're just very labor intensive to make and require very precise engineering to work. Sure, you'll have to probably pay around $1-2k for a decent one but even the really high-end ones don't usually go much higher than $8-10k. If you look at, say, Violins you are looking at a much larger sum of money for a good one, and the high end ones can go into the hundreds of thousands.
That said, you can get the Nerdy Gurdy now which starts at around $700 or even $350ish if you choose to assemble it yourself.
