Great video, great game, and what a great story. It takes a real man to come to terms with reality the way Benko did, realizing that Fischer, and not himself, was the best and perhaps the only real hope for challenging the Soviet machine. I have nothing but admiration for this man, and thanks for another great vid KC.
It's because of Bxe5. If White recaptures, then he drops the exchange, and Black ends up with a position in which all his pieces are active and centralized. In e.g. 1. g4 Bxe5 2. dxe5 Qxd3 3. Rxd3 Rxd3 4. gxf5 gxf5, White has a lazy knight on h2 and the c3 knight pinned against the rook on c1. So White will want to grab a knight in exchange for the bishop. But then Black plays Bxd4, and has all sorts of threats like discovered checks, the weak queen, the bishop on the light squares, etc.
Yeah i didn't see it at first either. Classic deflection tactic. :D I was looking at Ne2+ and Nxg2/Nxh3. seemed like a knight move was winning to me. completely overlooked the bishop deflecting the queen away with Ba6! great game KC.
I am not a great player but can someone explain why at 8:48 white cannot fork the two knights with pawn to G4? I know it exposes the king a bit but perhaps worth it to gain a whole piece

KingsCrusher you are a true Gentlemen.
I was watch the ending and then realized that i have a tab with all the Fischer Spassky 1972 games
on g5 there black can play Bxe5 - this seems really good for black. g4 really weakens Whites king.
Chess 'commentator' means commenting on the game, which is exactly what ddhavall was talking about.

thanks!
If Benko didn’t cede his spot in the interzonal Fischer never would have become champion.
why white move f3 insted of quin to f1
ah. now I see, thanks!
i could not see that bishop move lols
