Employment attorney Adam Gonnelli discusses how California employers must meet certain requirements for each employee they retain for their business.
Every employee deserves at least the minimum wage per hour as set forth by the federal government. It may surprise you that the minimum wage in California is actually higher than that required by the government. While most of the country is set at $7.25 an hour for employees, the hourly rate in California is $8.00 an hour. In some areas of California, it's even higher.
Along with minimum wage requirements, an employer must pay their workers overtime based on a week of more than 40 hours worked. This is also required across the country. And again, in California, overtime is gained not only when you reach over 40 hours but when you've worked more than 8 hours in a given day. At 12 hours in a given day, you're even paid double time. You should know your rights as an employee and how to get help if those rights are violated.
