- Gang of Gin (previously Victory Gin) is a Babyshambles track, that was recorded during the sessions for their second single, Killamangiro, as Doherty was no longer permitted to play with The Libertines. The lyrics of Gang of Gin tell how "Carl and McGee both promised me / It would not happen this way" and of "McGee doing all he can to ruin my band." The track was intended to be included as a B Side to Killamangiro; however, Alan McGee threatened that if Doherty released the track he would take legal action, and so it was never officially released. Nevertheless, shortly after it was recorded, Gang of Gin was leaked onto the internet via the now closed www.thelibertines.co.nr, so it could still be downloaded by fans. Even though Doherty was not allowed to release the song, Babyshambles still regularly played it live at gigs, and a live version was included on the release of Up the Shambles in November 2007.
Gang of Gin was also played on Radio 1, with DJ Zane Lowe saying, "Peter Doherty and his band Babyshambles have recorded and written a new song, which has been leaked online, right? By rights, we really shouldn't be playing it, and I definitely can't release my sources, but I believe we'd be doing you all a disservice if we didn't make this the hottest record in the world, today!"
When Andrew Kendall uploaded the content of Doherty's "My Music" folder onto his website, in April 2006, it contained both an earlier version of Gang of Gin titled Victory Gin, and a rip of the Radio 1 broadcast of the song.
I just remembered the buzz I got off this song upon release amid the tension, chaos and absolute shambles surrounding both babyshambles and dirty pretty things. What an amazing time. The shambles were on fire 🔥
ditto

@@sammook01 there's a few others. Can't remember if it was the Whitechapel sessions or one of the other ones 🤔 shaken and withdrawn megamix is one I just ì remembered about.
Amazing song, amazing lyrcis... and the history of the song about the release is part of the greatness of this song

my favourite shambles song ever...wish they could've released it
It is like the oasis b sides the 90s ones totally brilliant right on the edge of being bad but it comes off with pure swagger

Hi Miss Pete,
Just a quick note that the song "Who's got the crack" is a cover of the Mouldy Peaches.

@ClerEv Actually, my daughter's friends ( all around 20 years old) started to give me this surname about 2/3 years ago cause I was wearing hats like him and hey were surprised by my personnality an the way I dress nd behave (so my daughter told me, she told me that they were calling me DestroyVivi as well but much prefered the first one) So, yes, II admit I still have a lot to lean about him and I thank you for my first good lesson ! And I mentionned Amy because of the song
This is rock and roll baby … in a nutshell
(PART TWO) "Who's got the crack ?' and also because the were friends and I've read horribles things on YT about her death and Pete's name was comming back a lot, things lik "how come this scumbag didn't die too, it would be a relief" and so on. I wrote that just two demistiified drug addiction a bit and had a little litghness to it... even if it's a serious problem... It wasn't "out of topic" at the time I wrote it but I'm sorry if it sounds this way !
@misspetedoherty Oh please... it's referred to Carlos, not to McGee. You call yourself 'misspetedoherty' and don't know the basics of Libs/pete's biography? carl was on drugs long before pete and he was the one who involved pete in these habits. Even Carl was addicted as much as pete but pete was the only one thrown out of the band... Libs died after this indeed. Amy Winehouse doesn't have anything to do with this song. Totally off topic.
