QUICK CORRECTION: I didn't catch Sony going back _again_ on its free upgrade promise for this game earlier this year. If you buy the PS4 version, it'll cost $10 to upgrade to the PS5 release. Gross. Also even though I wrote "Blades of Chaos" in the script, apparently my brain decided to call them Chains of Olympus at one point which is amazing. Correct, I believe Horizon Forbidden West was the last Sony title that gives you the PS5 upgrade version for same price as PS4. All PS5 1st party games are $70 since launch.

Playing the earlier games makes the 2019 and Ragnarok so much better. Kratos character development from the 1st 2 games until now is incredible and the side missions in the last God of war pulls you to Kratos mind in how he has changed. The game is a masterpiece.
I love the old ones. They still have better bosses and gore then new ones. But love those as as well. Ragnarok is a amazing game. But there are terrible pacing issues keeping it from a masterpiece to me. 9 out 10
@@nopenope7482 what were your pacing issues? The 2 parts of the game that, for me, began to feel like they dragged on too much were 1. IronWood and 2. Vanaheim. I still enjoyed these places but after a while i felt like we should have moved on by a certain point

Just so I don't get your hopes up - I can't say I have plans to go back to other GoW titles in the near future, this one's more of a one-off as opposed to the start of a retrospective series. It'll probably happen one day down the road, though!

This game being easier than 2018 is the polar opposite of my experience... The main story in 2018 posed very little challenge, even major boss fights I barely died on the hard difficulty through the whole game, excluding a couple particularly tough parts right near the end. Ragnarok on the other hand has had numerous boss fights that kicked my ass until i was forced to master the enemy's move set. This is great and I'm loving the beefed up challenge, it just seems odd for someone to say this is somehow easier lol. This game throws a valkyrie fight into the main story within the first 12 hrs for christ sake! you didn't face anything that tough in GOW 2018 until far later as that was mainly reserved for endgame content. 2018 still had plenty of challenge as well on high difficulties, but mainly in the optional and side content. This game had much more of a consistent challenge across the board IMO

It’s because enemies have there own levels so some areas enemies are harder….at least that’s my guess

To be fair, climbing, crawling segments, and other shit is done as a way for videogames to keep playing without having to add in a loading screen. Everytime that happens, its because the game is loading in more segments of the game without subjecting players to feeling like the game has to stop as much as loading screens do.
Of course - load masking is a necessary evil for any of the late-era PS4 games; my issue is that there are certainly more creative ways to mask loading than to rely so heavily on climbing this time around! They continue using a few other strategies in game, as well.

Actually devs just came out and said it’s mostly for pacing.
Also to lock players from backtracking too often, also part of keeping the pace.

Can we transmog the weapons? I really dig the early designs, but the more they're upgraded, the more delicate and ceremonial they appear.
I was wondering this too. I've seen leaks of how the blades and axe look this time fully upgraded and don't get me wrong they look bad ass but I like the more basic looking ones from the start of the game or how they look at the end of 2018 GOW
@@brandogents6624 that's the problem with console game formatting. It's like, "Hey, have any shield in this game, but this section's off limits," despite having all the assets required on the disc.

For what it's worth, way back in the day I used to score my reviews/retrospectives, and over time I stopped in part because people would just complain or converse about the score itself, rather than the words. At that point, it's easier to just put up a picture and say "9" or "10" or whatever and not elaborate, since a lot of folks miss the forest for the trees, y'know?

I only got into god of war during the first lockdown of covid and absolutely loved it, never played any of the older ones, but im am super hyped for Ragnarok

GoW 2018 was one of those games that I wish I could play again for the first time and I believe ragnarok is going to be same. I cant wait!
I think the climbing bits were used for dialogue , and to tell the storie rather than loading time cuz if there were none they couldnt just put dialogue in combat but maybe its just me ( sorry for my english )

I just started this game and played like 4 hours, your review is so honest and true.
Great commentary.
The only bug I experienced during my playthrough was in Muspelheim when you had to accompany a certain character to look for a puzzle piece. This happened when you had to press ⭕️ to walk under a collapsed gate before walking into a combat encounter. I died a few times during that encounter and after that, the ⭕️ prompt wouldn’t appear anymore.
If anyone knows what I’m referring to and have experienced this, I’d be curious to know. Everything else ran perfectly aside from this.

it sounds to me like Kratos has fully embraced his role as what TV Tropes calls the comically serious. There was a bit of that in the previous game, but here it's going to be full on. Also, as someone who played every game before the 2018 one, it was interesting to see how different the game was. Not counting Betrayal though, but I don't think anyone does.
Kratos turning into a overplayed cliche isn't a good thing.

Hm, this review actually gave me real interest in playing the PS4 god of war game when I’ve struggled before to find the motivation to play it. Ragnarok looks incredible.

I had GoW 2018 on the shelf and played it in 2018 for 1 hour and switched to something else (don't ask me why). I picked it up 2 weeks ago and played it almost continuously until finishing it. Immediately pre-ordered Ragnarok. My advice: play GoW 2018 and right after that Ragnarok. The best 100 to 150 hours you will ever spend. Guaranteed 👍
I didnt have motivation to play ot until recently either, but once you get about 2 hours in, it's over, you're hooked.
The combat was pretty.....interesting to get used to, but I can dig it
@@Rukyr99 damn. imagine getting to play gow 2018 on pc for the first time (like i got to this year and ive put a fat 80 hours into it) and then getting to immediately play Ragnarok on ps5... would be awesome especially with a hefty supply of goodies such as LSD, cannabis, amphetamine, a dissociative - maybe ketamine, clonazepam and alprazolam to balance out the mania ect.

Have you thought about doing a video on Song of the Deep? It's another game made by Insomniac, thought it might make for an interesting topic for your channel since you've gone in depth on so many of their other games.
Here's a fun fact actually, Song of the Deep was one of the first games I recorded gameplay for when I invested in a capture card! I don't have that footage anymore but I'd like to find a way to look at it one day - it'd be a matter of finding the right way to feature it, though. The reason I included so much Resistance info in the PS3 Ratchet videos, for example, is because even Resistance just absolutely bombs on UA-cam, any channel that tries covering it ends up with significantly below average numbers. (In Resistance's case, it also helps that I can't look at the multiplayer or co-op modes since they're just gone forever, but that's neither here nor there.)
So instead I backdoored it as relevant context to a video I knew wouldn't completely flop! I'd have to figure out a good way to do that with Song of the Deep, because otherwise it's exactly the kind of video I'd dedicate a ton of time to, only for it to fall flat and make me sad.

I mostly enjoyed elden ring because, prior to my playing the game, I didn't watch any reviews or previews of it. So when I got into the game, I was overwhelmed.
The 2018 God of was was less exciting for me because I watched so many of these videos. I'm getting this game on Wednesday, and I don't want any spoilers so I'll let this pass

This game has blew me away . I’ve been practically obsessed with it when I have free time . I’ve put 53 hours into it so far . The biggest hang up I had was with that king Beserker . It literally took like a week to finally beat him and I didn’t drop the difficulty. The only thing that was a little disappointing to me is no New game plus yet but I’m sure it’s coming because they added it in a few months after launch in 2018 too . I really hope so but either way I’ll be replaying this game again .
35-40 hours to beat it! Impressive! I'm like 60 hours in and probably half way through the game 😅 I suck at games. I got stuck on the challenge where you have to fight the two mini bosses. I think it's called the berserker challenges?
Back in GOW 2018, Atreus has this moment in the story where he fights on his own. This should have been there since Atreus is now older and more capable of fighting.
It is there at some occasions . The kid freaks out and fight on hiw own and i love it.

I had more bugs on ps 5. I had 2 hard crashes, the music had a glitch, after leaving the shop my frames dropped under 20 fps until I restarted the game, I fell once through the map... but still it was a lot of fun!

I've seen several " So Called Reviews" where the game journalist only played 10 hrs of the game. And still tried to review it! Ridiculous! I'm glad to see someone like this guy who actually played the entire game right to the end and all the side content. Great video!
Good video as usual. My only gripe is where there's controversy on ps4 to PS5 upgrade being $10. Keep in mind that every single time you buy a PS5 title of any game, you always receive the license for the PS4 version. So it makes no difference either upgrading, or buying the PS5 version.
If the upgrades were free, there'd be literally no point buying the ps5 version. people would go out of their way to specifically buy the ps4 version. Im not justifying $70 games, but it's fair to charge $10 more to make up for the diffrence on the ps5 version.
Imagine buying the ps5 version of a game and NOT receiving the PS4 version too.
My issue is pretty exclusively that Sony indicated in 2020, very clearly, that all PS4/PS5 cross-gen games would be free upgrades, and then walked it back, and then unwalked it back but only for Horizon, and only because there was such a big blowup about it. Companies don't have to stick to their words, but consumers don't have to sit quietly when they don't either!

There is PS4 to 5 save transfer, yes! It's built into the save structure of the game too, so it should be painless.
As for the other comment, I promise a multibillion dollar company doesn't need you defending them on the YT comments bud. Sony pushed the free upgrades in part to counter to the much more consumer friendly Xbox Smart Delivery, before deciding to walk it back after both Horizon and God of War had clear internal delays due to COVID's impact on production timelines/the work from home shift/etc., and 6-12 month delays are costly. If they messaged it that way and weren't a continual walking PR disaster in recent years, there'd be significantly more good faith from the consumer regarding the walk-back. PlayStation sends me games for review relatively frequently, hell they temporarily upgraded my and many others' PS+ memberships to test out the mediocre Premium service when it changed over; if _I_ can separate myself from that and call them out on poor practice and poorer messaging, so can you!

Climbing is there to allow parts of the level to load. Remember that this game also works on a decade old PS4.
Also, while replaying the 2018 game in anticipation for ragnorak, I noticed that usually the more lengthy climbing sessions weren’t necessarily needless, but were a vessel for dialogue and exposition.
I the devs literally came out and said it’s for pacing and locking players out from always backtracking.
I've noted elsewhere that a significant number of them are very clearly a pacing choice, _not_ a load mask, especially considering how slow the movement is compared to every other game that load masks with climbing. And climbing, despite Ragnarok being twice as long as 2018 (give or take), feels more than twice as common/long overall, dedeslite there being other load masking strategies (or pacing slowdowns for dialogue and narrative) in the game that could have been featured more frequently, so that there wasn't so much climbing in a game where half the time Kratos can just grapple up comparable walls and make you question why he's not doing that more when he has the ability to. It's the point that it's something I decided to point out!

Like with Baldur, you fight Thor pretty much right at the start of the game, and the fight itself isn't too far off in terms of how it turns out. I won't say how often you see him after that, but that should answer your question!

I'd just like to know. Does ragnarok begin immdeiately with thor arriving or does it start out differently. If it's different, no spoilers please I'm just curious if it picks up right where 2018 ended or not.

It doesn't immediately start with Thor showing up, there are a few plot points and about 30 to 45 mins of gameplay that you have to play through first. It's only there to get you familiar with what's been going on with Kratos and Atreus after the 4-year wait between games, and afterward, it gets straight into Thor's arrival to kick off the rest of the story.

The slow climbing, slow door opening, long elevator rides, realm transitions unfortunately will not really go away, it's hidden loading screens.
One of the costs of having a full "one-shot" (with the camera) game, seemless transitions and not loading screens.
The trend of games costing $70 is concerning. It feels like they are testing what price they can get away with. In the next 5-10 years I expect games to cost $80-$100

I mean, we shouldnt except a massive change in combat since its a sequel, they already have the fundamentals built, its just very improved. We've seen that with many games before, so that shouldnt really be a shocker to anyone.
I'm going to be careful to avoid spoilers, but watching a bare-bones 19 hour playthrough of the main storyline made me cry so many times I literally lost count. One section hit me REALLY HARD in my mom feels, and I probably cried through 75% of the section nonstop.
I was excited about seeing this game, but I had no intention of buying or even playing it. I want all the information, to see all the interactions in the side quests SO BADLY that I'm going to buy it. Because this game and its stories are something special!
I'm an unapologetically FromSoft, Souls Borne groupie. Elden Ring was beautiful and amazing, but I honestly think God of War Ragnarok easily beats it for Game of the Year. And I didn't think there was any way that was possible before it dropped.

it took me 53 hours to complete the game and get 100% as well as platinum the game. and I loved ever bit of it...I hope for an expansion or DLC where we play as Atreus traveling and so on.
How long for you to beat the game and the main side quests?
@@kasimafzal3535 hard to say maybe 40 hours for the main stuff, while going back and forth to do side stuff, the last several hours were post-ending cleaning up.

the only reason gow ps4 and ragnorak is a great character development for Kratos is because of the original trilogy.... So I think it's necessary for Kratos to have been that old character from first trilogy.

funnily enough, I actually prefer Kratos from the earlier games, playing someone who was fundamentally not a good person was and still is somewhat unique today
Sucks they skipped on the opportunity to let us fight with Mjolnir, but it makes sense based on how Thor uses it. It's just too strong and would make us OP asf.
Not really, leviathan axe is honestly better than Mjonir, Mjolnir is not the Hammer of legend you believe it is, this is an alternate Norse mythos that's more true to how the gods are, compared to MCU Norse mythos

In the game that I'm actually talking about, Thor takes one swing at something and it goes flying off into the distance. He can very easily fly with it. One hit knocks Kratos tf out.
It's silly how powerful it is and that's exactly why we didn't get it.
