Beenz: One of Greatest dotcom Disasters of all Time... | Nostalgia Nerd

- ... that's according to CNet at least, who put it in their top 10 greatest defunct Web sites and dotcom disasters all time. That's not how I arrived here though; I actually stumbled across a news article on Beenz.com whilst flicking through a stack of Computer Active! magazines. Several fascinating rabbit holes followed which apparently led to a script, and then this video... So, let's see whether Beenz was really a dot com disaster or just a misunderstood platform, launched at the wrong time. I mean, take Bitcoin, well that turned to out be a hit didn't it? But digital currencies weren't so popular back in the youthful days of the internet. Beenz was one of these so called digital currencies, launching at the height of the .com bubble, and although it's very different to Bitcoin, it still had lofty goals, an excellent management team at the helm and a lot of real world money to try and make it a currency to dominate the internet. Of course, if you look closer, it looks more like a points, or rewards scheme than anything dramatic, but marketing is a wonderful thing, as is the internet.

I can remember when I set up a computer for my grandparents. I showed them how to use Ask Jeeves, then google became more powerful. They refused to use google, so one day I blocked Ask Jeeves from their browser. They were stumped when it wouldn't load, I told them that Jeeves had died. They were absolutely mortified and even tried to send a condolences card to his family. They told their neighbor's that their friend in the internet had passed away, and nobody had the heart to tell them that he was about as real as the tooth fairy. It was the funniest and most horrible thing I had ever done in my life.

@@Rhombusreal yeah I'm a dick. I only spend my time outside of work looking after them, getting their shopping, cleaning their house, helping my grandad in and out of the bath. Or using my personal leave to take them to their hospital appointments, I selfishly took a weekend away on holiday in 2016, but I've not been away since then, because I need to save all my leave for them, and if I don't it makes me a dick.

They parodied this currency model in the game Hypnospace Outlaw. It’s an alternate universe 1990s internet where you play as “internet police”. It was called “Hypnocoin”. You could use them to buy wallpapers, music, etc. Commercial sites used them just like they were described in the video too where users were paid hypnocoin for taking surveys and there was even coin tracking too.

You should do one on eBates, we had to study them as a business case example of a really bad business idea during my MBA program. Their plan was to sell merchandise at a ridiculously high markup, then customers would fill out a rebate to get 100% of it back. Apparently the founders thought the usual low turnout for normal retail rebates would apply to them, that essentially that only 5 to 10% of buyers would claim the rebates. That was not the case, customers were filing for rebates at well over 90% which of course made eBates unsustainable and they went out of business quickly, leaving many customers stuck with merchandise that they paid a markup many times over the MSRP.
