Different times back then, game's changed a lot since 2007. Now we have the TMO checking every 5 minutes

@@patrickdervan3444 you obviously haven’t watched much rugby, the cards that are being dished out are for nothing collisions half the time now and pandering to the people like yourself who are trying to water the game down to make it “more inclusive”. End of the day it’s a contact sport …. If your unhappy with that go and play another sport
@@herb2078 Can't deny the games today look far safer than what was shown in this video. Shows that the game is a contact sport but can have measure put in place to make it safer.
I played underage rugby all my youth. As an adult, I fought boxing, kickboxing and MMA for 10 years. Both contact sports, but guess which one caused all my concussions, broken bones and missing teeth....underage rugby.
Of course this is purely anecdotal.
I'd sooner put my children into MMA classes than on a rugby pitch.

As a massive Bok fan, it’s always a pleasure to play Samoa, because you know it’s going to be a heavily physical game. Which is what we love!!
It's normally hectic for 10-15min then they just fade away and injure themselves.

@@jonathandavis8599more like they fade when the ref starts making dubious calls that help open the floodgates for the boks and other big nations. The ref ruined what would’ve been a competitive and nail biting game. Racist refs ruin the game.
I must say Boks and Manu do love the physicality of Rugby. This is right down the alley for both sides
I didn't think this game was particularly violent. Just another great test between South Africa and a Pacific Island team. Love watching the Springboks play All Blacks, Manu Samoa, Tonga and Fiji. Great physical encounters always against those teams of real men who leave it all on the field and no hard feelings afterwards. Respect to all those teams players past and present from a Springbok supporter.
I think the match they play years ago at Elispark was the hardest

I agree with you Glenne83. I only saw one incident which may have been dodgy. The rest was a very hard, fast and physical contest between 2 teams who love playing it that way.

This game was one of my favourites ever.
As a Samoan playing the Boks means it will be entertaining. While most teams will play safe and bide their time to exploit mistakes the Boks aren't afraid to make it a physical affair and see who breaks first.
As a South African I always liked watching games between these two teams. The Samoans always put up one hell of a fight, I cannot recall ever watching a boring game between these two.
One thing about the Boks is they dont shy away from contact, we always played this way and against the Pacific Island teams and you know its going to be good.
RESPECT TO SAMOA…in 2007, the population was 183,000. For such a small nation they matched far larger countries with no problem..drawing from a very small pool and having very limited exposure…Go Samoa
Agreed. If they had the financial backing They could keep their players without losing them to other nations like AB & Aus. It would make the game far more entertaining, apart from that it would give local NZ a chance to represent their country.
Sort of. There have been multiple occasions when Samoa touring teams have comprised not a single Samoan born, raised & rugbyised player, coach, or assistant coaches. One year the Samoan squad had one Samoan born member and he was the physio. Their 2007 RWC squad was pretty light on island born players. Just FYI, Auckland New Zealand, has more polynesians in it, than all the rest of the world combined. Sort of have to take those claims of "Tiny island takes on world" with a grain of salt, when they’ve got their modern versions of colonies in NZ & Aus to source from and they don’t play any other sports to diminish the size of the pool.
Never forget that NZ kept stealing their best players as they had more money, making Samoa even more awesome, had Soma had the money to keep their players, they not NZ would be SAs biggest rival.

I remember watching this game at the time and thinking it was the most brutally physical game I had ever seen. I knew at that point the Boks would win the world cup after smashing 50 points against such a physical team that threw everything at them.
This Samoan team was awesome. We had 0 answers to stopping them physically. I’ve never seen a springbok team seem so physically vulnerable. All worked out tho
I watched that game live and thought how it was possible that the ref could allow the high tackles and hard tackles without using arms. Most of it was not in this video. It happened from both sides, so at least the ref was consistent.
The HARDER you play against the Boks, the HARDER we play back. LOVE IT. It's like an arm wrestling match always with the Samoans.

OK was edited highlights but seems to me the Boks just take the hits and carry on. No moaning, no play acting - just accepting physicality is a big part of the Islanders' game. I think this is why the Boks are so feared and often start matches 7-0 up from the dressing room. They never, ever back down or hide.
I remember getting in trouble for recording the RWC2007 and uploading full games. Wasn't as easy to do 16 years ago.
I had to record to DVD then use a DVD ripper then take 10 years to upload 😂

The pack from 2007 - 2009 were world beaters. Physically overwhelming.

With Bakkies Botha and two Tuilagis on the pitch, I'm not surprised it's a brutal match. I'm more surprised they didn't end up killing each other

It’s a shame that we don’t see many games played at a similar intensity nowadays. I get that health and safety is important, but players can’t do anything in contact without risking a penalty, card, ban, etc.
Let’s be honest this everytime when the boks and manu play against each other it’s always entertaining to watch

Henry Tuilagi rampaged through/over one of the best international back rows of all time on several occasions, and also smashed du Randt in a tackle (not included in this video). I’ve never seen such a physically dominant player and probably never will again. Genuinely scary.

When rugby was still...RUGBY!!! After this years RWC I am officially retiring as a fan. The officiating/bias is next level k@k. Cards are used to sway games. Players crying/flopping at every contact to get opposition sent off. TV directors showing 50/50 calls on repeat to influence the TMO but not the same for the away team. Its just a piss show!!!

The difference between the Springboks and Northern teams is that that each player has had these types of crazy physical games at club and provincial level week in and week out. In Super Rugby, every game was like this in New Zealand.

Tonga and Samoa always play a good physical game, relying on strength to overwhelm their opponents.
When those 2 teams get to keep their better players from emigrating around the world, they will become a powerhouse to be reckoned with.

The Tuilagi bros era Samoa were scary, but they didn't have much of a gameplay beyond running hard and running support lines for offloads. Once the Boks got the lay of the land, they pumped the blue boys real bad.
A game between two sides, that can goon it up to 100 if they want to, but one of them had a complete game of rugby besides that, while the other side didn't.
Sorry, the ref ruined the game when he started making dubious calls in favor of the boks. Not saying Samoa would have won, but it would have been a very close affair without that racist ref.
I love this because the Boks have always been physical and seem at this point to be one of the only teams that can not only handle the Samoan physicality but can also dish it back. And from what I can tell, the Samoans love that. The All Blacks are nifty and although physical they don't necessarily rely on that as their #1 form of attack. So if the Islanders play for All Blacks they are not as expected to play the way they would as Islanders. Here they play without a worry because it will be handled and dishes out as much. I love this kind of battle.
Samoa comfortably won the physical battle in this game. 80% of the big hits were from Samoans. Boks fitter, more skilled, more organised, which gave them the win.

It seems Henry Tuilagi's son Pasolo is just as big and hard hitting. Would be great to see more of him as well. Only 18 but already a beast. I remember one game between Boks and Samoa where Derrik Hougaard got the ball and next moment there's a blue flash and Hougaard had just disappeared!

When rugby was rugby. A proper physical game that was championed as a contact sport. Now you win games by who gets the least amount of cards for any slight bit of aggression. Games ruined

I've seen a painting of Captain Cooks end. Bodies of sailors all over the beach. It occurred to me that at some time around 1840 English sailors in the south pacific must have played the first game of rugby with the locals. I imagined a scene of English bodies laid out all over the beach and a bunch of Pollys jumping around screaming and the sailors going WTF just happened.
The test between the same two teams in around ten years ago was also pretty tasty.

back in the "long lost times" when men were allowed to play rugby, embrace physicality, and not fear a red card for making a dominant tackle. At today's rate of officiating we may as well be watching Nic White playing football before the RWC even kicks off.

I would also say that the 2nd test against 2009 B&I Lions was a far more violent game than this one but good nonetheless.
