  • In this 1961 recording, Pierre Monteux (1875-1964) conducts the London Symphony Orchestra in a performance of Debussy's Prelude a l'apres-midi d'un faune. I created this video from the LP shown above, issued in 1962 on the London label, serial number CM 9317. (This is a monaural recording.) According to the program notes on the reverse sode of the LP jacket, this recording was Monteux's first after becoming principal conductor in 1961 of the London Symphony Orchestra. During his brief ballet career, Monteux presided over the world premiers of both Petrushka and Daphnes et Chloe, as well as the premier of the ballet version of Prelude a l'apres-midi d'un Faune.
So that there is no question in the mind of the listener, I rely principally on images of the LP and LP jacket in order to document the authenticity of historically important recordings such as these.
Another performance of this work from 1960:

I love this recording. I had the London reissue of this in the Seventies, with the
    Symphonie Fantastique on it.
His recording of all three of Debussy's Trois Nocturnes, reissued
on RCA Victrola, is one of my very favorite recordings ever. I bought it when I was in
    high school in the Sixties.

Perfect timing ... no questionable rubato...
Every flutist should hear the entrance done without breathing.

The flute soloist is Alexander Murray. He describes his experience playing the opening with a single breath in his article, "The Alexander Technique: Pupils, students, teachers."
