I was there on a school trip with our music teacher Mr McCabe at this historic concert and indeed we did give Monteaux and Stravinski a rousing reception. And no Glarewin I beg to differ this is just the right speed!!
Happy 100th anniversary to The Rite of Spring! How can a piece of music that still sounds so fresh, vital, and frenetic be a century old? It boggles my mind.
slothropgr - Yes, the '59 Paris Conserv. version wasn't one of his best, no doubt. Ever listen to the version, with another Paris orchestra, from 1929? It's one of the GREATEST performances of a 20th century, classical/orchestral work, on record.
Recorded just in the nick of time, Monteux died the next year. There's a 1951 studio recording with the BSO elsewhere on Y-T, and it seems to me PM managed to squeeze in a stereo version around 1959 or so, unfortunately with the Paris Conservatory Orchestra, who really wasn't up to it. Scratchy strings, tubby dark sound but Monteux made 'em sound like, well, not a million but at least a couple hundred thousand.
Robert Craft wrote in diary entry for that night, "I.S. has not been touched in the least by the sentiments of the occasion. On the contrary it has incited him to loud criticism, and only late at night as we are re-entering the hotel does he cool off about the wrong tempi to call le maitre "un tres brave homme." Try the overlooked San Francisco/Monteux album for a really representative performance.
LSO was kind of sloppy that night, although you can hear the tunes more than a lot of performances from that vintage. Did Craft say which tempi Stravinsky objected to? (And can we compare those to his own recordings and the piano roll he authorized?)
Glarewin you should know that Monteux premiered Le Sacre in1913 and that Stravinsky attended this concert too, in 1963. Unless you didn't speak with Igor himself you should listen to this performance as a reference recording 😉
You’ve clearly gotten far too used to the modern interpretation where they rush through everything headlong and don’t give the music any room to breathe.
Monteux was 88 years old when he conducted this performance and he did it without a score. I think the tempi are perfectly fine as they allow for great clarity of the writing.

Too slow. Stravinsky's original 1940, as well as his Columbia 1960, clock at 31 minutes flat. The Sacrifice, especially here, is too slow.
Conducted masterfully (and without a score) by the 88 year old Monteux.
Happy 100th anniversary to The Rite of Spring!

Interesting and in some respects the definitive performance ~ thanks for uploading.
may 29, 1963
Wow!
Grazie Keith!
grazie...a presto!
これは、もの凄い演奏会の記録。初演者のモントゥー(当時38歳)の50年後の演奏で、死の前年、88才時のとき。複雑なスコアをそのまま音化した豊かで深く明晰な演奏で、ただ黙って聴くほかない。
Great to exercise and dance too in early morning hours before I go to my job at a military hospital 😃🎊
speriamo che un giorno verrà pubblicato

credo non sia mai stata pubblicata su cd

Interesting timpani mistake just after 14:00
Was this recording ever released commercially?

perchè non si può vedere stravinsky condurre la sagra?? ho visto uno spezzone. il filmato c'è. almeno per i 100 anni nel 2013.
"But he's crazy" said Camille Saint Säens at the premiere. But he WAS 78 years old.
Myth. Saint Säens was not at the premiere, and that's from Stravinsky's own mouth.
Disappointing. This performance is too slow and is a chore to listen.

Monteux conducted another performance in 1929 that is FAR faster.
