Exce!!ent instructions and video! I really needed that information since I am replacing the carb on my old (22 years) 42" Craftsman mower. I'm 82 years old and getting forgetful 😊. Thank you!!
I'm a simple person. I love listening to and watching small engines run. It's very satisfying to see and engine running after not starting for after a year and a half. I experienced a similar scenario after your videos helped me to get an 18-year-old gas trimmer going that had not started for three years.
Got a free Craftsman LT1000. It had been sitting outdoors for at least five years. Both the rear tires were flat... Replaced the carburetor for $89, Rear tire tubes for $26 and the blades for $32 and later the mower deck belt for $16, air filter $14, oil change $4, cup holder $5. It runs great and has earned its keep already this summer. You can't appreciate a lawn tractor until you've spent 30 years pushing a mower....
Every time i watch your videos i want to run out and start working on one. But since it is about 11pm here, i think i will wait. Thanks for another good one.
Great video. I was wondering where all of those small plastic pieces that came with the new carb went. I have been searching for days. The way you explained the choke process, Great video.
dony - Great video - just bought a Craftsmen 15.5 HP 42" Lawnmower Tractor. This thing has not been used in a couple of years I think. I am ignorant when it comes to this kind of stuff. Am now retired so am going to have to learn. Your video is very good with the exception of sometimes the attention to detail in camera work and instructions for us administrative types is lacking, but it is the best I have found yet on You Tube. Try to focus in on the links, springs, etc. Watch your fingers
I work on mowers in my spare time here in texas and 2 times last year I had customers said motor ran at way to high r.p.m. well I found the screws fell out of the butterfly for throttle and of course the screws on one got imbedded in head butterfly did not make it past valve the other butterfly broke in half never found it and 1 screw have you ran into this problem thanks for all the time you put into teaching everyone how to repair the machines
Excellent Video with step by step instructions. I found that the choke control lever was a little different that the original. There was a small plastic vertical knob that interfered with the air filter housing. I simply cut the little knob to make it like the original carb. Don't forget to attach the solenoid cable to to the bottom of the Carburetor. my 14.5 hp engine has never run better.
hoooooo wheeeeeeee! a GENUINE carb. that mustve costed a fortune. lol( i always rebuild or use aftermarket) your vids are always packed with information. keep them coming😊
larry johnson go onto amazon. youd need the make of the equipment it is installed on but just typing in walbro 4993 carburetor comes up with multiple listings. as cheap as 15 dollars. find the one with FREE shipping and make sure it is a us seller unless you want to wait a month lol. if you have prime shipping from amazon is free. 30 day trial is offered IF you never had prime in a year or two. my carb. for my snowblower tecumseh hm100 engine has the fuel fitting angled compared to straight i know they can be swapped but i didnt bother. rebuilt that one. kits are dirt cheap as well.
larry johnson lol well as the saying goes....try try again. i pulled up suggestions around 13 dollars cheapest. youd need to get the carb numbers and engine info. it sometimes takes me hours but its there. also try ebay.
210000 BS intek Has done this since it was new off and on, load tested battery did a starter draw test, cables even went directly to the starter with a good battery.Sometimes it works ok but most of the times it does not. I was told by a dealer early on that there is a sliding compression release built into the exhaust cam lobe and I was wondering if Dony had run into this problem. Compression test was within specs at the time according to dealer.
Thanks Eddie. I had thought of JBW but not with a coat hanger. I may try it if I can think of a way to support the hanger while it is drying. Maybe I could leave the carb on the engine (drying position would be horizontal) and set the hanger on a wood block laid at the bottom of the engine compartment. Another way might be to remove the carb and lay it on its side on my workbench and just hold the hanger in place for however many minutes it takes for the JBW to firm up enough to hold it.
Nice job once again. I found that using a heat gun to soften the gas line helps it to come off very easily. This is especially good when you have a short line that you need to reuse.
Turn on the Engine. Let it warm up for about 10 minutes. Idle at the "lowest" speed setting, LISTEN to the sound as you adjust. You want to hear the Engine smooth, but running as LOW as you can during idle. NOTE: I adjust until it almost shut down, then turn half way up.
Is that type of carb not rebuildable? Is it not necessary to put some locktite on all the bolts you are putting back? Nice video!! Thanks for sharing your talent.
reat video, sat laptop on my workbench while replacing my carb. Great presentation and great explanations. the former carb was flooding out the engine. With new carb on it ran, but smoked like crazy. I figured the exhaust was full of oil and gas from the former flooding so went and cut grass for 40 minutes. It eventually cleared up mostly, but not all. I am wondering why it would now smoke and if it could be the valves? I had lockup on start and found a video on setting the valves and that solved the starting issue, but why would it now smoke?
I have a 14.5 HP B&S 287707. It has a Nikki carb. I cleaned it with berrryman carb dip and blew it out with air. I did however re-use the gaskets and needle. Basically i cleaned it and put it back together. I reinstall it on engine, and the engine starts on full choke and will run at full choke for about 10 seconds before dieing. Also, as soon as I pull the throttle lever down in those 10 seconds, it immediately dies. Any suggestions? I thoroughly enjoy your videos and have helped tremendously
Hi, I have a Huskee Supreme 25.0HP 50 in. deck from Tractor Supply, probably almost 8 years old. Almost put in the amount of money that was paid for it in repairs to the local small engine repair store. So, this year, I am determined to get this thing running myself. I am having trouble finding a video of the carburetor cleaning/repair of a similar model. I put in a new battery, fuel filter, oil filter, air filter, spark plugs, oil change, new ethanol-free gas, even pulled out a mummified mouse. From what I have read online, I figured the carburetor is next. It still won't start, even when I sprayed ether in the intake...Don't know where to go from here. Thanks for your help/advice.
I have a 1996 toro wheel horse lawn tractor model # 71193 14-38XL and the carburetor number per the manual on this Briggs & Stratton engine is 497061 . I cannot find a replacement carburetor and I’m wondering what your suggestion would be. I am a new subscriber to your channel and I’m very impressed with your videos and your explanations. Thank you for all that you do
When I remove the old carburetor, could I just copy the idle and the other adjustment onto the new carburetor by counting the amount of turns that the old carburetor had by backing it in and then backing it out?
Yes, you can do that. Some aftermarket, it's a bit different. Here is how I do it.... Turn on the Engine. Let it warm up for about 10 minutes. Idle at the "lowest" speed setting, LISTEN to the sound as you adjust. You want to hear the Engine smooth, but running as LOW as you can during idling. NOTE: I adjust until it almost shut down, then turn half way up.
Before I replace the new carburetor on the engine could I copy the adjustment screw that's on the old carburetor so that I don't have to do any adjustments once I start the engine?
Donyboy, i have a 17hp briggs thats been sitting for 6+ years in the weather, and the carb is setup almost exactly teh same, should that carb work on the mower i have? can, you please make a video of cleaning that old carb, so i have an idea of how to clean mine. Thanks for this helpful video sir!
How do you change the choke springs on these carbs? The one I am working on i have to manually turn off choke becaus ethe spring is broken, i bought a new spring, just don't know how to remove the broken one and install the new. Thanks.
Don- Thanks, this is very helpful...So, that electrical plug at the bottom of the carb is a safety solenoid...Perhaps you can explain how to troubleshoot that solenoid for me...Should 12 volts be present at that plug when the key switch is on? I am trying to help a long distance buddy get a similar engine running and I think the problem is in that safety solenoid...Thanks- Don K.
I used this video tonight to replace the carb on my B&S motor as it was identical to yours. The previous carb was flooding the engine. Followed your video step by step and now the motor cranks and turns over for 1-2 seconds before dying. Any ideas? Even though the old carb was flooding the engine it would still run.
I have been needing to find a video about how to replace the carburetor on a 1998 Murray with a 17hp Tecumseh engine. This carburetor looks like the one I am replacing. I hope it works. The only difference seems to be that my breather cover has two screws instead of just one.
At 3:37 Where could I get one of those adjustment screws? I was working on my tractor that has a 2010 B&S 12.5 Hp Power Built engine and I went to adjust that screw I broke it right off, I managed to get the old screw out but I can't find a new one.
Can you remove the solenoid to get the bowl off for a cleaning without taking the rest of it apart? Looks like I have a similar carb but I cannot see how to remove the solenoid.
Hello sir my zero turn. Don’t want to crank I put a new battery and spark plug. And nothing. It just turns but no crank. Do you think I need to replace the carburetor?
Very useful, thanks Donyboy - the video is also a very good quality. I came here to see how the governor cable and spring hooks up to the throttle butterfly lever. I am reinstalling my carb (after a strip, clean and paint of the entire tractor) and the throttle stays open all the way - just with more or less tension according to the plastic slider position that is controlled by the throttle cable. Is this right or should the governor close the throttle when the throttle cable is pushed to the idle position?
you make this look so easy.. I have a scotts riding mower 17 hp intek briggs and stratton engine.. carb is like super trashy... if you dont mind.. how much did you pay for your new carb for your riding mower? I waiting on mine from ebay just under 20 bucks..
dony i need to repair a flywheel on a 16.5 briggs and repair the starter gear both are worn and need replacing have you made ant repair videos that covers this

Absolutely great video. Replaced the carb on my 23 year old Murray with a B&S 14.5 motor.
Couldn't have been easier. Thank you!
So freaking helpful. Only complaint is I didn't find your video sooner. Well done.
thanks Walter, make sure you're subscribed
Thanks Donyboy, you made a great job, very helpful.
you're welcome dude, just in time for spring repairs
God bless you always donyboy you are a good person you help millions of people.thanks again

Hey Donyboy, I applied this video to my Murray 17hp Tecumseh engine, and it worked out beautifully. I appreciate your help! Thanks
you're welcome

hey brother you are the best. you just helped me alot, am helping a buddy of mine fix lawn mower, so this was very helpful brother thank you so much.

You make my day... I clean my carburetor, put it back in place, and the engine never work so well!-)
Excellent vid, I replaced the carb on my briggs 12.5 flathead a couple years ago and it fixed a surging problem the engine had
Great vid!!! I kept scrolling on other vids that took me nowhere but this one was right on point. Thanks for doing this for people!
Very well done! Easy to follow and understand. Thank you!
Beautifully done video. I'm dreading replacing a carburetor on my old Bolens, so this was very timely for me.

One of the best-presented and useful instructional videos. Many thanks.

Symptoms of why part/carb needed to be replaced ( for example bad solenoid )? Great Vid Doc!

That little spring that connects to the throttle with the linkage, is that absolutely necessary because I broke t
Fascinating. Great camera work.
If you don't have a shutoff valve could you plug the line somehow or would it be better to drain the fuel tank first? Great video by the way.
Thanks brother, I found part cheap on Amazon with your help. It's on it's way. Thanks again
This was exactly what I needed. I feel confident enough to repair my carburetor on my own now. Thanks so much!
I've been looking and looking for this info! Good quality, easy to understand video. Thank you very much.
Id take a marker and put a line on each side of the choke cable bracket before I'd remove it just so I'd know where to put it back...great video
You’re the man! Thanks so much for saving precious time
Donny you're awesome! I appreciate you
How do you adjust the screw above the one mixture screw thanks ...

Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks for the video and the details which I would have found very useful when I had the smaller 3.5 HP engined grass cutter.
how do u keep track of the hardware u take off?
Great detail on this video as always on your great site. Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it!
The filter on that mower is made for systems with a fuel pump. I guess it has been working fine. Always wondered what difference it makes.
How do you adjust the carb before putting the plastic piece on?
Excellent video! Thanks. Exactly what I needed.

Is it better to buy a new Carb then rebuild the old one
Great video
Dony, are you going to rebuild the old carb for another project or return it as a core? Great tutorial.
Thank you so much for posting this video it was very helpful.😀😀

Have you ever did a video on how to rebuild that style engine?
Nice video - I have a slightly different carb - 593432 for a Snapper RideOn - but this was still a help and love that it is high quality video.
Donny I want to replace Nikki carburetor with a Walbro. How do I tell which carburetor fits my JD S180?
Before I replace the new carburetor on the engine could I copy the adjustment screw that's on the old carburetor so that I don't have to do any adjustments once I start the engine?
Great video Don. As usual!!
Dony do you know what size bolt is used to hold the blade onto a briggs and stratton 35 classic engine?
Your videos are an inspiration many Thanks.

I have the same question as Kirbywatch07. How do you remove the bowl? On my carb, there is a sensor on the bottom of the bowl where the nut should be.

this carb had flooding issues and other problems, customer opted for complete carb replacement
Great video, I have 2 questions:
1) how long did the replacement take?
2) when you work on machines, do you do any clean up? like power wash?
Dony, i got a craftsman that when you let you'r foot off the brake it shuts off and it does not have a deck?
Hi can you do a video on tuning 2 and 4 stroke engines please. Thanks
I have a engine 133432 0036 01 and the carb is discontinued. will any other carb fit for this model from your experience
I have been needing to find a video about how to replace the carburetor on a 1998 Murray with a 17hp Tecumseh engine. This carburetor looks like the one I am replacing. I hope it works. The only difference seems to be that my breather cover has two screws instead of just one.
so where do i find the # for the carb replacement?
What if the carburetor you replaced did not have a solenoid on it and the new carb does is it gonna prevent the fuel from going through
Yes it will, you will need power at the solenoid.
Is there a governor on this engine? I did't see you connect a governor arm.
At 3:37 Where could I get one of those adjustment screws? I was working on my tractor that has a 2010 B&S 12.5 Hp Power Built engine and I went to adjust that screw I broke it right off, I managed to get the old screw out but I can't find a new one.
Very clear and helpful! I won't try to rebuild my carb..
+Lyle Allen for some it's better to get a new carb instead of rebuilding
Yeah.. I'm a believer
How many Welch plugs does this one take? I have a pony an when I lower the speed the engine speeds up rapidly instead of slows down.
Can you remove the solenoid to get the bowl off for a cleaning without taking the rest of it apart? Looks like I have a similar carb but I cannot see how to remove the solenoid.
if you grind a 1/2" open end wrench thinner it will fit between carb and solenoid and then you can remove it and the bowl will come off
Hello sir my zero turn. Don’t want to crank I put a new battery and spark plug. And nothing. It just turns but no crank. Do you think I need to replace the carburetor?
The po of my mower broke the tip of the mixture screw off inside the carb and wont come out. Any tips on hot to get it out?
thanks Mike

Will the connector on bottom of carb work either way? I forgot Wich way it cam off and it goes on both ways.
dony i need to repair a flywheel on a 16.5 briggs and repair the starter gear both are worn and need replacing have you made ant repair videos that covers this
thanks for the video extremely helpful!!!
Good job! I do those all the time.
do you have to have that little electrical thing on the bottom of the carburetor? and how important is that breather for the crankshaft?
yes you need that solenoid at the bottom of carb
donyboy73 why do you need it?
Could you possibly post the initial mixture screw settings? How many turns?
Thank you.
Nice video.
